'YOKE FOR RAILWAY DRAFT-HIGGIN'G.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 12, 1914. Serial No. 811,603.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Yokes for Railway Dr'aft- R1ggings, of which the following is a spec1fication.
This invention relates to improvements in yokes for railway draft riggings.
One object of the invention is to provide a yoke consisting of two separable castings of identical structure and adapted to be cast from the same pattern.
Another object of the invention is to provide a two-piece cast yoke the parts of which are provided with integral means for attaching the same together.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts. and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an improved yoke embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is-a vertical, enlarged section of the two-piece yoke taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the rear end of one of the yoke members.
In said drawing the yoke, as shown, comprises two members A A which are of like construction, each member having upper and lower arms 10 and 11, rear curved end 12 and a front wing or extension 13 slotted as at 11 to receive a coupler connecting key. Each member A of the yoke at its rear end is provided with an integral web 15 having a widened vertically extending flange 16 adapted to bear against the rear follower of the rigging. Extending laterally from each web 15 on the inner side thereof is a hookshaped flange 17 which terminates a short distance from the curved portion 12 as shown at 18.
The two members A are assembled as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, in which position the hook-shaped flanges 17 engage and overlap, thus preventing the members from separating laterally, although a limited amount of relative sliding movement is possible between the membersA A, the amount corresponding. substantially to the distance between the rear edges of the hook-shaped flanges 17 and the curved ends 12. This relative sliding movement between the two yoke members is provided so that one member may move forward slightly when the car to which the rigging is attached is traveling over a curved track to thereby relieve the strains between the draw-bar and yoke.
From the preceding description it will be seen that the two yoke members may be made from the same pattern; the two members are locked together and prevented from lateral separation by means cast integralthereon and at the same time a slight amount of relative longitudinal movement is permitted.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
1 claim:
1. A cast yoke for railway draft riggings which consists of two separate and like parts having at their rear ends integral means for detachably connecting the same together, said connecting means being separable b v relative movement in vertical planes, and said parts having relative longitudinal movement which is limited in extent by said connecting means, substantially as specified.
I 2. A cast yoke for railway draft riggings. which consists of two separate parts having integral means arranged near the central horizontal plane of the yoke for detachably connecting the said parts together, said two parts having relative longitudinal movement which is limited in extent by .said detachably connecting means.
3. A yoke of the character described consisting of two separable loops each of which is provided with a filler at its rear end, said fillers being provided on their adjacent faces with interlocking parts for detachably connecting said loops together.
4. A yoke of the character described consisting of two separable and like parts each of which is provided with an integral filler at the rear end thereof. each filler, on its inner side. having an integral hook-shaped flange, said flanges being adapted to overlap when the parts are assembled, substantially as specified.
10 which consists of two separable loops having parts abutting against each other, said loops having integral means arranged within said abutting parts for detachably connecting the said loops together, and having relative longitudinal movement which is limited in eX- 15 tent by said detachably connecting means.
