APPARATUS FOR USE IN THE TREATMENT OF PILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Application filed October 10, 1917. Serial Naif-25,772.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residin at Quincy, in the county of Adams and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Use in the Treatment of Piles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to anapparatus for use in treating piles, and has for its primary object to provide simple means which may be applied to the affected parts for the application. of a medicament thereto.
It is also an object of my invention to provide a pad and suitable harness for retaining the same in position, and medicament receiving means adapted for detachable connection to said pad, and for insertion into the rectum, said means being acted upon by the muscles, so that the medicament will be expelled and applied to the affected parts.
It is another object of the invention to provide improved means for holding the medicament containing and releasing instrument within the rectum, and which will also prevent the protrusion of the piles or hemorrhoids.
And it is a further general object of my invention to provide a device for the purpose above stated, which is simple and inexpensive in its construction and also highly serviceable and convenient in practical use.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustratin the device as applied in practical use;
ig. 2 is a sectional view through the compressible medicament containing nipple and thei pad or baseto which it is connected; an
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nipple.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a relatively heavy piece of fabric constituting the base of the pad or bandage. This pad base may be of any desired form in plan, but is preferably of substantially rectangular shape. Upon one side of tlils base 5, a sheet of rubber, indicated at 6, is secured. This rubber sheet is provided with a central opening and slits extending diametrically from this opening to provide a series of tabs or lips, indicated at 7 A nipple 8 of soft rubber is provided with a circular base 9, which is adapted to be inserted through the central opening in the rubber sheet and detachably held in place upon the pad or bandage by the several tabs or lips 7. The nipple at its other end is open, as shown at 10, and the elongated body of the nipple is also provided in the wall thereof with a plurality of perforations 11.
12 designates a waist band, which is adapted to be buckled or otherwise secured around the waist of the user, as shown, and a strap 13 is secured to one end of the pad or bandage and is adapted to be connected at its free end to a buckle on the back portion of the waist band. Additional straps or tapes 14 are also secured to the other end of the pad or bandage 5 adjacent its opposite edges and are adapted toextend upwardly between the legs and be connected to additional buckles or fastening means on the band 12. These straps 13 and 14 are preferably of elastic material.
In the use of the invention, it will be understood that the nipple 8 is first filled with a suitable ointment or medicament, and the base 9 of this nipple is then engaged under the tabs or lips 7 on the pad. The waist band is secured around the waist and the nipple then inserted into the rectum. The straps or tapes 14 are finally drawn up wardly and connected to the band 12 and properly adjusted so that the pad will be tightly held in its applied position. The nipple will be compressed or squeezed in the action of the muscles of the rectum when it is inserted, thereby causin the expulsion of the ointment containe in the nipple through the opening 10 in the end thereof and the perforations 11. The muscles are thus kept thoroughly lubricated in a manner to assist in the natural actions of the rectum so that constipation will be prevented. The ointment has a healing action upon the parts and the bandage carrying the nipple efi'ectually prevents the protrusion of the piles from the rectum.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of use and several advantages of the device will be clearly understo'od. By applying the ointment or greatly e edited. The device may be very easily an quickly applied by the user or removed, when necessary. In view of the very simple form and construction of the several parts of the device, it will also be obvious that the invention can be produced at relatively small manufacturing cost.
While I have herein shown and described the referred construction and arran ement of t e several features of the device, 1t is to be understood that the same are susceptible of considerable modification and I, therefore, reserve the privilege of adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. An apparatus of the character described including a compressible medicament containing nipple havin perforated body walls for the extension 0 the medicament upon compression of the nipple, said nipple having an enlarged fiat circular base, and retaming means for the nipple consisting of a pad having a flexible fabric base, a rubber sheet secured upon said base and adapted for engagement against the base of the nipple, said rubber sheet affording a smooth nonporous surface for contact with the skin of the user, and means connected to the base sheet of said pad for holding the pad in its applied position with relation. to the nipple.
2. A bougie consisting of a flat circular base having a solid elongated neck centrally projecting therefrom and a hollow compressible nipple formed on the extremity of said neck, said nipple being provided at its apex with a relatively large opening through which the interior of the nipple may be filled with the medicament, and the body wall of the nipple being further provided with a plurality of smaller perforations for the extrusion of the medicament from the nipple upon compression thereof.
3. An apparatus of the character described includin a pad, consisting of a fabric base and a ru bersheet secured upon one side of said base, said sheet being rovided with a plurality of relatively movable holding tabs, a perforated medicament containing nipple having a base adapted to be engaged by said tabs to detachably hold the nipple in connection with the pad, and means for retaining said pad in its applied position.
4. An apparatus of the character described including a pad consisting of a fabric base sheet and a rubber sheet secured upon the fabric base sheet and having a central opening therein, a perforated medicament contaming rubber nipple having a base adapted to be detachably engaged through said opening and held by the rubber sheet in connection with said pad, and means connected to the opposite ends of the pad for retaining the same in itsapplied position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
