V. F ERRARO RETAINING DEVICE FOR PROTRUDING FILES Filed May 11, 1954 IN VEN TOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent RETAINING DEVICE FOR PROTRUDING PILES Vincent Ferraro, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application May 11, 1954, Serial No. 429,017
Claims. (Cl. 12898) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in medical and surgical instruments or appliances for treatment and relief of piles or hemorrhoids.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved pile retractor which can be easily and conveniently inserted and removed and which will accomplish its purpose effectively, efliciently and comfortably.
As a further object, the present invention proposes forming the pile retractor substantially cylindrical in form and of resilient material with a long cylindrical front instrument portion, a long shank of reduced diameter and a short finger gripping rear end portion having a flexible cord attached thereto.
Still further, the present invention proposes providing a shield of flexible and resilient material slidably and frictionally mounted on the reduced shank portion of the pile retractor.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pile retractor of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pile retractor.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the pile retractor is made in the form of a substantially cylindrical member molded or otherwise formed of resilient material such as hard rubber.
Member 15 has a long cylindrical instrument end portion 16, a shank portion 17 of reduced diameter and substantially the same length as the instrument end portion 16, and a short finger gripping end portion 18 of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion 16.
Instrument end portion 16 is located at the front end of the member 15 and the finger gripping end portion 18 is located at the rear end of member 15 with the reduced shank 17 between the two end portions 16 and 18.
The cylindrical instrument end portion 16 has a rounded free front end 19 and a smoothly tapering rear end 20. The finger gripping end portion 18 has a smoothly tapering front end 21 and a wedge-shaped tapering free rear end 22.
The wedge-shaped tapering rear end 22 of finger gripping end portion 18 has a cord opening 23 transversely disposed and extending through it. A flexible cord 24 of smaller diameter than the cord opening 23 extends through the cord opening in a continuous loop, the ends 25 of the cord being tied in a knot 26.
A shield 27 of resilient, flexible material, such as sheet rubber, is frictionally and slidably secured on the reduced shank portion 17 of member 15. Shield 27 has a central shank opening 28 which can be extended or stretched over either end of member 15 and which will frictionally and slidably fit on the shank portion 17.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein 2,721,549 Patented Oct. 25, 1955 disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:
1. A pile retractor comprising a substantially cylindrical member of resilient material, said member having a long instrument end portion, a shank portion of reduced diameter and of substantially the same length as the instrument end portion, a short finger gripping end portion of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion, a flexible cord secured to the finger gripping end portion, and a shield of flexible material slidably secured on the shank portion.
2. A pile retractor comprising a substantially cylindrical member of resilient material, said member having a long instrument end portion, a shank portion of reduced diameter and of substantially the same length as the instrument end portion, a short finger gripping end portion of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion, a flexible cord secured to the finger gripping end portion, and a shield of flexible resilient material frictionally and slidably secured on the shank portion, said shield having a central opening adapted frictionally and slidably to fit around the shank portion.
3. A pile retractor comprising a substantially cylindrical member of resilient material, said member having a long instrument end portion, a shank portion of reduced diameter and of substantially the same length as the instrument end portion, a short finger gripping end portion of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion, said finger gripping end portion having a wedge-shaped tapering free end with a cord opening therethrough, a flexible cord of smaller diameter than the cord opening extending through the cord opening in a continuous loop, and a shield of flexible material slidably secured on the shank portion.
4. A pile retractor comprising a substantially cylindrical member of resilient material, said member having a long instrument end portion, a shank portion of reduced diameter and of substantially the same length as the instrument end portion, a short finger gripping end portion of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion, said finger gripping end portion having a wedgeshaped tapering free end with a cord opening therethrough, a flexible cord of smaller diameter than the cord opening extending through the cord opening in a continuous loop, and a shield of flexible material slidably secured on the shank portion, said instrument end portion having a rounded free front end.
5. A pile retractor comprising a substantially cylindrical member of resilient material, said member having a long instrument end portion, a shank portion of reduced diameter and of substantially the same length as the instrument end portion, a short finger gripping end portion of no greater diameter than the instrument end portion, a flexible cord secured to the finger gripping end portion, and a shield of flexible material slidably secured on the shank portion, said instrument end portion having a rounded free front end and a smoothly tapering rear end, and said finger gripping end portion having a smoothly tapering front end and a wedge-shaped tapering free rear end.
