LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose-Leaf Binders, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to loose-leaf binders; and its object is generally, to provide such a binder which shall be simple and economical in construction; and more particularly, such a binder adapted to contain leaves whose binding margin may be very narrow, whereby a larger portion of the leaves may open out flat than in previous binders of this type. In such binders employing posts engaging in notches in the binding margin of the leaves, it has hitherto been necessary to provide a wide binding margin for the leaves, because the posts must be set a considerable distance inwardly from the edge of the leaves in order to provide a sufficient portion of each leaf outside the posts to prevent the tearing or otherwise accidentally disengaging of the leaf from the posts. The objects of the present invention are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter described and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of one of the leaves contained therein.

In the embodiment of the invention chosen for detailed description herein and for illustration in the drawings, there are provided a pair of covers 1 having apertures 2 therethrough adjacent their binding edges. The leaves 3, constituting the leaf-body contained in the binder, have notches l in their edges as particularly shown in Fig. 8. A cooperating pair of leaf-holding members 5 are adapted to be inserted through said apertures and into the said notches from the opposite sides respectively of the binder and leafbody, and are adapted to hold the covers and leaves in position edgewise, and their portions adjacent the apertures and notches respectively in position laterally, as by means of the angularly extending flanges 6. 7 carried by one said member and threaded in a portion of the other member as in its headed hollow post 8.

The screw may be turned one way or the other to accommodate and securely hold a leaf-body of varying thicknesses.

It will be seen that inasmuch as such adjustable means--the screw and hollow postpass through the flanges of the members respectively an outside of that portion 9 of such iI'ISHIlJQIS which engages in the notches, the outer side of the screw and post may extend at least to the extreme edge of the bind ing margin of the leaves; and the notches need be no deeper than the thickness of the screw or post plus the thickness of the thin portion of the leaf-holding members which engage in the notches. Thus a very narrow binding margin for the leaves is possible, whereby the leaves be opened out flat almost to such members.

The invention being intended to be defined solely by the claims, is not to be limited by details of construction shown or described.

What is claimed is:

1. In a loose-leaf binder adapted to contain leaves having open notches with oven hangs in their edges; a leaf-holding member having a portion adapted to be inserted into the notches and to be retained therein by the overhangs and to hold the leaves in position edgewise and another portion adapted to hold the leaf portions adjacent the notches in position laterally; and adjustable means for securing said member in its operative position.

2. In a loose-leaf binder adapted to contain leaves having open notches in their edge, a cooperating pair of leaf-holding members having portions adapted to be insorted into the same notches from opposite sides respectively of the leaf-body and to hold the leaves in position edgewise and other portions adapted to hold the leaf portions adjacent the notches in position laterally; and adjustable means between the binding edge of the leaves and said inserted portions and within the dimensions edgewise of the leaves and extending between said members for securing the same in operative position.

In a loose-leaf binder adapted to contain leaves having open notches with overhangs in their edges; a leaf-holding member adapted to be inserted into the notches and to be retained therein by the overhangs and to hold the leaves in position edgewise, and having a laterallyextending flange adapted to hold the portions of the leaves adjacent the notches in position laterally; and adjustable means substantially within the dimensions ed 'ewiseof the leaves for securing .said member in its operative position.

6. In a loose-leaf binder adapted to contain leaves having open notches in their edges; a pair of covers having apertures therethrough adjacent their binding edges; a cooperating pair of leaf-holding members having portions adapted to be inserted through said apertures and into the notches from opposite sides respectively of the binder and to hold the covers and leaves in position against any movement edgewise and other portions adapted to hold the eat and cover portions adjacent their apertures and notches respectively in position latorally; and means extending between said members and outside the portions of said members which engage in the apertures and notches, for adjustably securing said members together.
