GARBAGE-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1918.
To (rZi whom it ma concern:
. Be it known t at I, JozsEr LOSONCY, a
subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of'Pennsylvania have invented certain ,new
and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans,
readily opened by the foot of the operator whenever desiredfor use and maintained open until released.
' A further object of the device-is to providea receptacle for garbage that is easy to manufacture and possesses great strength,
the same being sanita in its arrangement and readily operable without employing the hands for opening and closing the device. In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts the spring 21 to close the lid 12, WhlCh ac throughout the several views Figure, 1 is a side elevation of the device closed, the same being illustrated by dotted lines in its open position.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal transverse sectional view of the same taken upon line IIIIII of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view of the spring hinge portion of the device.
.The present arrangement may provide a receptacle of any desired dimensions and cross-sectional formation, the same being herein illustrated as a can 10 mounted upon a plurality of supporting legs 11, a circular;
disk or cover 12 being hinged thereon.
A bracket 13 projects upwardly from the can 10 and is arranged with a vertical slot 14 longitudinally therein through which a rear extension 15 of a cleat 16-secured diametrically upon the to of the lid 12 is pivoted by means of a lntle 17 v A forwardly projectlng flange 18 at the top of the bracket 13 has a depending lug 19 upon its forward oblique side 20 for mounting the upper end of a helical spring 21, the lower end of which is seated over a similar lug 22 upon the aforementioned cleat 16. It will be understood that the spring 21 normally maintains the lid 12 in its-closed position upon the can 10.
\ A foot lever '23 is pivoted as at 24 to a post 25 swivellyarranged within a central post 26 while the lever 23 extends outwardly between two oppositely projecting angular racks 27. A rod or link 28 connects the lever 23 as at 29 with the loop 30 at the outer free end of the cleat extension 15 while an enlarged foot engaging tread plate 31 is provided at the outer free end of the lever 23,.the upper face of the said preferably roughened.
It will be understood that by placing the foot upon the plate 31 and .depressing the lever 23, that the rod 12 will be elevated upon its pintle 17 a inst the action of'the spring 21 while a shghtly'lateral movement. imparted to the said lever will position the same beneath the horizontal portion 32 ofone of the racks 27, thereby maintainin the lid open. When desired to have the 11d 12 assume its closed positlon, the plate 31 is plate being given a lateral impulse releasing the same from the retaining rack 27 and permitting tion is assisted by the weight of the said lid. The entire device is preferably. formed ofmetal, preventing the same from burning I while thelid 12 may be maintained substanthe bottom of the can, and an operating foot lever for the lid pivoted to the said post.
2. A garbage receptacle comprising a can, a hinged closure for the said can, an operating lever for the lid centrally swlveled beneath the said can, and angular retaining brackets oppositely arranged with respect to the lever having horizontal portlons positioned adjacent thereto.
3. A arbage device comprising a can, a closure inged thereto, a post swiveled to the bottom of the can, an operating foot lever for the lid pivoted to the sa1 post, and angular retaining brackets opposltely arranged with respect to the lever having horizontal portions adjacent thereto.
4. A device of the 9laS described compriss a can, elevating legs for the can, a bracket carriedaby the can having an overlying top flange, a closure lid for the said can, a cleat secured to the said lid having an extension pivoted to the said bracket, and a closure spring tensioned between the said cleat and flange.
5. A device of the class described comprising a can elevating legs for the can, a bracket carried by the can having-an overlying top flange, a closure lid for the said can a cleat secured to the\ said lid having an extension pivoted to the said bracket a closure spring tensioned between the said cleat and flange, a centrally depending boss carried by the can, a post swivelly mounted in the said boss, a lever pivoted to the said boss radially extending outwardly of the can having a tread'plate at its free end, and a pivoting link between the said lever and EX, tension I A device of the class described comprising a can, elevating legs for the can, a
nearest in the said boss, a lever pivoted to the said boss radially extending outwardly of the can having a tread plate at its free end, a pivot ing link between the said lever and eXtenslon, angular retaining racks arranged in spaced relations at the opposite sides oi the lever having horizontal receiving portions adapted for detachably receiving said lever therebeneath when in its depressed laterally displaced position with the lid in its open arrangement.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
