- This invention relates to springmaking machines and more particularly to scrollforming machines. It is the general object of the invention to provide a machine of this kind which is adapted to produce and accommodate variations in the scrolls and camber of the spring lates on which it 0perates; which is capa le of convenient and ready adjustment whereby such variations may be produced and accomplished, and which is simple in construction but partlcularly efficient in operation.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL M. MoIN- rrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Plate-Bending Machines, of which the following is a full,
" clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to springmaking machines and more particularly to scrollforming machines. It is the general object of the invention to provide a machine of this kind which is adapted to produce and accommodate variations in the scrolls and camber of the spring lates on which it 0perates; which is capa le of convenient and ready adjustment whereby such variations may be produced and accomplished, and which is simple in construction but partlcularly efficient in operation. may be defined further and more generally as consisting of the combinations of elements set forth in the claims hereto annexed and illustrated in the drawings forming part hereof, wherein Figure 1 represents a plan view of the machine showing the positions of the parts prior to operation; Fig. 2 a sectional view corresponding to the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a view, similar to Fig. 1, showing the positions of the parts at the end of the operation; and Fig. 4 a sectional view corresponding to the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Describing by reference characters the various arts illustrated herein, 1 denotes a suitab e base or bed plate on which there is mounted a rotary scroll former as well as a combined plate cambering and grip ing or dragging mechanism. The scroll orm is mounted on a bracket 2 projecting from one side of the base or bed plate 1 and provided with an arcuate slot 3 near its periphery. The form comprises a block 4 of suitable curvature having a curved recess 5 for the accommodation of the spring eye. This block may be provided with an angular tenon 6 fitting within a corresponding hole or mortise in the pivotally supported end plate 7 of the lever 8, the block and lever being secured to the plate by means of a bolt 9. One side of the block 4 is curved, as shown at 4, and this is the operating side which determines the curvature of the scroll. 10 denotes a block which is mounted op- The invention posite the recess 5, being slidably secured to the plate 7 by a yoke 11. Fromthe face of the block oppositethese pins there proects a suitable stud 13 which is adapted to be engaged by a cam 14 mounted on a shaft 15 having an operating handle 16, the shaft being journaled at one end on theplate 7 and extending through a'yoke plate 17-. The lever plate 71s provided with a downwardly extending lug 18 mounted- Within the arcuate slot 3. and said slot is provided with an ad ustable stop-19, ofU-sha'ped formation, one lug of saidstop projectin slot 3 and 'a set screw 20 exten ing through Within the W the other lug and bearing against the outer plate applied to the scroll form to camber the same as well asto exert a frictional drag upon the same whereby it is forced to follow the contour of the scroll form. This mechanism comprises two opposed series of adjustable spring-engaging members, one series of members being carried on a. cross head slidably mounted within a recess of the base 1 and the other series being mounted in a recess of the base and adjustable in said recess. 21 denotes the cross head to which ref erence hasbeen made, said cross head being of inverted U shape and comprising an end 22 and sides 23 projecting from a bottom web. 21 denotes templet sections or springengaging members which are mounted in the recess of the cross head. These spring engaging members are in contact with each otherand extend entirely across the space between the sides 23. Each member is provided with an adjusting screw 25 threaded thercinto and having an operating head 26 bearingagainst the end 22. Alternate members are provided each with a recess 27 facing toward one side of the cross head whilev each of the other members is provided with a recess 27 facing in the opposite direction. Through each recess thus provided between the members or templetsections of each pair, there extends a bolt 28 which is secured at its lower end to the bottom of the cross head, each of said bolts having a flanged nut 29 on its upper end. Each adjusting head 26 may be provided with suitable a 'ierturcs 26' for the insertion of'an operating tool.
Projecting from the bottom of the cross head is a lug 30 having through which the screw 31 extends, said screw being supported against longitudinal movement. by the bed plate 1 and having an operating wheel 32 andhandle 33.
The opposite series of spring engaging members or templet sections 34 are mounted in a recess in the bed plate opposed to that which contains the members 24. being retained within said recess by means of a suitable plate 35 beneath which their bodies extend. These members or templet sections extend across the entire space between the side walls of the recess and are each provided with a screw 36'wliich is threaded thereinto, each screw having a reduced unthreaded portion extending through a cross bar 37 rigid with the bed plate and provided on the opposite side of the cross bar from the members 34 with an operating head 38 which may have holes 38" therein for the reception of a suitable rotating tool.
With the parts constructed as described. it is believed that the operation will be readil y'appa rent. The spring engaging members or templet sections :24 and 34 are adjusted according to theciu'vature or camber which it is desired to give to the particular run. of spring plates. The screw 31 is then rotated in the appropriate. direction to move the cross head 21 away from the members 3%. A spring plate is inserted in the space thus forn'ied with its eye opposite the recess 5 and in position to be engaged by the pins 12. The cam shaft 15 is rotated by the handle 16 to force the rounded side of the spring eye into the recess '5 and to retain it therein. The cross head 22 is then moved in an appropriate direction to grip the spring plate .40, and to-give it the desired camber. The lever is then moved in 'a direction to pull the spring plate between the opposed members or templet sections. slacking up the screw 31 slightly. if necessary. and the plate is bent around the form +1 and a scroll is formed therein having the desired curvature. When the lever is moved to final position against the stop 19, the cross head is operated by the hand wheel to clamp the plate and give it its final shape.
It will be evidentthat sufiicient adjustment of the spring engaging members is possible to vary to a considerable extent the position of the clamping and gripping means with reference to the scroll form; also that the amount of rotation imparted to this form may be controlled by means of the adjust able stop 19. By employing th same scroll form and adjusting the templet sections 24 and 3-1. considerable variation may be made in the shape of the scroll as well as a threaded bore in the camber given to the plate. Furthermore, by removing the form 4, other forms may be Substituted to produce still other shapes.
. \Vhile the invention shown herein is capable of more general application, it is particularly well adapted for the making of the upper sections or hangers of three-quarter scroll-elliptic springs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with a scroll form having a recesstherein for the reception of a portion of a spring eye, of a lever on which said form is mounted, means on said lever adj ust able toward and from the form for forcing the eye into said recess, and means adapted to grip the spring plate to oppose a drag against the movement of the same during the rotation of the lever.
In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with a scroll form having a recess. means for forcing the eye of a spring plate into said recess, and means cooperating with said form to bend the plate therearound to produce a scroll therein.
3. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a rotary scroll form having a recess, means for forcing'the eye of a spring plate into said recess, means for rotating said form, and means cooperating with said form to frictionally grip such plate thereby to cause the plate to assume the shape of said form as the latter is rotated.
4. In a machine of the character set forth,-
the combination, with a scroll form having a recess, of a block movable toward and from the recess and adapted to force the eye of a spring plate thereinto, plate engaging studs carried by said block, and means co operating with the formfor bending-a plate therearound.
5. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with a rotary scroll form having a recess, of a block movable toward and from the recess and adapted to force the eye of a spring plate thereinto, said block being rotatable with said form, scroll engagingstuds'carried by said block, means for rotating said form and block, and means cooperating with the form to exert a frictional drag upon a spring plateiwhereby the latter will be bent around the form.
6. In a bending machine. the combination of plate bending means adapted to grip and bend one part of a plate, and scroll forming means adjacent thereto and adapted to grip and bend another part of such plate, the scroll forming means being movable to draw the plate through said plate bending means.
7. In a machine of the cha ractcr setforth, the combination of adj ustablc plate bending mechanism engageable with opposite sides nism for engaging the opposite sides of a spring plate to. bend the same and to exert a frictional drag thereupon, scroll-forming justable plate engaging members, of a carrier opposed to said members, a series of plate engaging members adjustably mounted in said carrier, means for moving the carrier toward and from the first series, and
scroll forming mechanism cooperating with the aforesaid plate-engaging members.
11. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with mechanisms for engaging opposite sides of and shaping a sprin plate, one of said mechanisms being mova )le toward and from the other, of a scroll-forming device in operative relation to said mechanisms and adapted to form a ,scroll on a plate interposed between said mechanisms, and means whereby a plate may be drawn between said mechanisms and about the scroll forming device.
12. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with bending mechanisms adapted to operate on opposite sides of a spring plate, said mechanisms being adjustable to vary the curvature of the plates interposed therebetween, of a rotary scroll form in ope ative relation to said mechanisms, and means for rotating said form.
13. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination, with mechanismsada-ptcd to operate on opposite sides of a spring plate, said mechanisms being adjustable to vary the curvature of plates interposed therebetween, of a rotary scroll form in operative relation to said mechanisms, and
means whereby said form may be variably.
rotated.
14. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a series of plateengaeing members, means for adjustingsaid menners, a cross head, a series of. spring engaging members in said cross head, means whereby the members of the second series may be adjusted, means for moving said cross head toward and from the first mentioned series, a lever pii'oted adjacent to said members, and a scroll form thereon.
15. In a machine of the character set forth, the combination of a rotary spring forn'iing device, means whereby a spring plate may be secured thereto, a friction device mounted adjacent to the first mentioned device and comprising two opposed series of plate engaging members and means whereby said members may be adjusted, and means for rotating one of said devices whereby a, spring plate secured to the first mentioned device may be drawn throu h the series of plate engaging members an bent about the form on the first mentioned device.
