To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ITALTQN E. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State 5 of Oklahoma, have invented a certain new' Y a cross bar, the latter of which may be hung onto a' ack beam and the like for raising and lowering the same.
The objects of my present improvement include the provision of certain novel constructions and arrangement of parts permitting ofv ready disengagement thereof for purposes of repair and substitution, as well as to bring about more effective efficient results in use, and the provision as well of means in connection with the lower-rod clamping member whereby the latter may be utilized as a brake for safely and effeci tively lowering the sucker rod into the well after the' necessary or desired repairs have been made thereto, or to the well casing.

The inner ends of the clamping arms-12 and lit-are also providedwith extensions at opposite sides of their cut away portions 14, which extensions are aperturmltor the reception of pintles 11) to form hinges con- -necting the inner adpicent ends of the clamping arms, constituting the joints thereof, and the outer ends of which pintles 19 normally PI'OJQCi; beyond the sides of the clamping arms, as plainly seen by reterence to Fig. 3. to receive the intermediate coils 20 ot springsfil, the arms of wlnch extend outwardly beyond the sides of the clamping.
The clamping arms 12 and 13 of the upper clamplO are suspended from a cross bar 22, the latter'of which is adapted for disposal over, or to be hung onto, a jack piece in the power operation of the device, this cross bar having hooks 23 at its opposite ends receiving the upper apertured ends 24 of suspension members 25, the latter of which have their lower apertured ends ex tending into the bifurcated outer ends of the clamping arms 12 and 13 for the reception of connecting pmsQG forming a pivotal connection and permitting of ready detachme'nt of the arms 12 and 13 when desired.
The clamping arms 12 and 13 of the lower clampi-ng menibcr have their bifurcated outer ends receiving the upper reduced ends 27 of a pair of supporting uprights 28, the reduced extensions 27 of which have slotted openings 29, as seen in Fig 5, rccciving' pins connecting the same to the clamping arms 12 and 13. The lower ends of the uprights 28 have reduced squared extensions 31 which interfit conformable'recesscs in the outer adjoining'faces of a pair of pipe clamping cross arms 32, the latter of which are secured in face'to face relation by means ofbolts 33 and have inner curved portions for clamping engagement with the upper end of the Well casing B, clearly seen b 1 reference to Fi s. 1 2 and i, 3 o 1 7 My izwention furthermore pro ides a lever seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, having apertures at its head in angular relation to one another, in order to receive the projecting end of one of the hinge pintles of the lower rod clamp 11, and the adjacent projecting end of one of the transverse pins 18 of a clamping bloc: 15, whereby closing movement of the clamping arms 12 and 13 office lower clamp 11 may be controlled manually in lowering a sucker rod A into a Well after the latter or the sucker rod has been repaired, as desired, interchangeable cramping blocks 15, one of which is seen in Fig. 6, being provided with-the clampingblocks 15 in connection with my improvements, having vertical grooves 16 with smooth surfaces so as to frictionally engage the surface of the sucker rod A'in lowering the some into the Well instead of a biting grip into the material thereof, as provided means? vthe blocks 15 of the lower clamp 11, may

I claim:
In a rod pulling machine, a rod engaging clamp consisting of a. pair of clamping members pivotally supported at their outer ends and having extensions at their inner adjacent ends intcrfitting one another and epertured, pins extending through the apertures of the said inter-fitting extensions to form hinges connecting the inner adjacent ends of the clamping members, the outer ends of Which pins project beyond therespective sides of the clamping members, and springs having intermediate coils mounted on the projecting ends of said pins and having their outer ends anchored to the sides of the clamping arms, for;;the purpose described. r
