HAT.
Specication of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 11, 191 '1,
Application iled October 11, 1915. Serial No. 65,270.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KAHN MURAKAMI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention re ates to hats, and more particularly to the manner of constructing hats and has for its primary object the provision of a cheap and durable material from which a hat may be formed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hat built u of a plurality of strips of paper or the lile twisted and braided to provide strands which may be wound and lnterlaced to build up a hat.
With the above and other objects in View my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 'Figure 1 is a plan view of the hat in process of forming, employing my improved strands;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the strips from which the twisted strands are formed;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of one of the strips partly rolled or twisted;
Fig. 4.- is a perspective View of the hat in process of formation showing my improved strands in use in another form, and' Fig. 5 is a sectional View ci the arrangen ments of strands shown in Fig. 4.
Similar4 reference characters designate simllar parts throughout the various views of the drawings. Y
More specifically, my invention embodies a strip of paper or the like designated 1, said strip bein rolled or twisted as indicated at 2 in Fig. 3 to provide a strand of pliable material easily woven or braided to afford the strand from which my hat isl built up.
In Fig. 1, I have shown one manner in which the strip 1 may be employed to form a hat. In this formfa plurality of twisted strips are braided as indicated at 3 to rovide a single strand designated 4. l he Istrand 4, as shown to advantagp in Fig. 1,
is spirally wound to form, in t is instance,
the crown of the hat, the'hat being indi `r cated in dotted lines and designated 5.
4Whenthe crown .has been built up from the strand 4 the convolution of said strand may be scwed or otherwise structurally connected so as to form a firm, yet pliable body. l
In Fig. 4, I have lllustrated another appllcation of my invention. The strand 1 is flattened as shown to advantage in Fig. 5 and interwoven as indicated at 6 in JFigs. 4 and 5. This will form the brimofthe hat and it will be seen that a cheap and Vdurable structure for the brim of the hat is thereby provided.
It is to be understood that while I have described the strandsy 1 as being of paper,
these strands may be of any strong and durable material and in some instances ,I may utilize straw or ratan, braiding said strands in the same manner in which the paper` strips are-braided. Furthermore, by forming the crown of a single strand of material which is co osed of'strips of aper twisted and braidied, and then spirally wound, an exceedingly pliable structure is afforded and also, one vwhich will. stand rough usage, due to the reinforced nature of the material from which it is formed. The rim by being ,constructed from stri s of twisted material which is wound and interwoven, presents a brim of sufcient stiffne to maintain the same in proper form and prevent sagging thereof; also, by forming the crown rof coil material, a great amount of iiexibility is imparted thereto, thus, permitting the same to be adjusted to the head of the wearer.
' From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehenslve understanding of' the construction, use and application of .my invention as well as 'its advantages may be readily gathered and while I have shown and described thesame` as embodying a specific structure, I reserve the right to make changes therein which do not depart from the sp1r1t and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimedis: Y 1. As an article of manufacture, a hat comprising a crown' formed from s irally wound flexible strips of material w ereby saidcrown may yield slightly to conform in shape to the wearers head, and a briml wound flexible strips of material, whereby said crown may yield slightly to accommodate different slzed and shaped heads, and u brim formed upon said crown oom osed of flat interwoven strips, a plurality o the last mentioned strips extendln at right angles to the remaining strips of t e last mentioned strips, thereby presenting a stiff brim which will hold its shape' irrespective of the yield- 10 ing of said crown, and the outer faces of said last mentioned strips extending in substantially even planes, thereby causing said brimto present even surfaces.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
KAHN MURAKAMI.
