To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KAMILLE BLnoHMAn,

subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible I-Iats, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in collapsible hats.

The present trend of style in hats, particularly in ladies hats, istoward simplicity, and the efforts of the hat manufacturer are directed toward producing hats which will be stylish, practically without trimming of any kind.

With the foregoing in View, the object of my invention is to provide a novel form of hat which is stylish in appearance and which is also collapsible so that it may be readily packed and shipped in quantities, occupying a relatively small amount of space.

In the accompanying drawing, I have shown two forms of my improved hat, and it will be understood that these forms have been selected merely from a great variety of forms which the invention may take.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. t is a top plan view of a modified form of the invention, the hat being shown collapsed; and Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the form of invention shown in F ig. 4, the hat being distended.

My aim in producing the novel form of hat about to be described is to so construct the device that normally it will be in collapsed position and when placed on the head will be distended into the desired form.

Referring first, to the preferred form of the invention, 10 denotes fairly stiff side members of the hat, which are preferably made of buckram or a similar material, cov ered with velvet, plush or any other desired material. These two side members 10, which may be of any form. are held together by an intermediate collapsible member 11 of cloth or light material without stiffening of any kind. The intermediate cloth member 11 is preferably composed of two similar pieces stitched together at the center at 12,

the stitching being run to the ends of the cloth to include and hold together the ex.- tremeends 13 of the stiff side members 10.

Owing to the fact that the ends 13 of the members 10 are stitched together, the members, 10 will have a normal tendency to close up or lie adjacent each other, and in so doing will inclose or encompass the intermediate cloth member 11 between; When the hat is placed in position on the wearers head, the side members are bowed or curved out as particularly shown in Fig. 3. separating the upper edges thereof and distending the intermediate cloth member 11. In this manner the hat is shaped and given the desired ornamental appearance.

Referring to the modified form of the in vention, it will benoted that the principle thereof is the same as that of the preferred form.

30 represents a flat brim member which is fairly stiff, and 31 an upper crown member, these two members being secured together by a soft collapsible intermediate cloth member 82. Normally the member 31 lies upon the member 30, and owing to the intermediate line of stitching 33 in the cloth member 32, the latter will be completely contained between the members 30 and 81. By placing the hat on the head of the wearer, the member 31 is raised whereby the cloth member 32 is distended and the hat has all the appearance of a wired frame hat.

It will be apparent that my invention embodies the characteristics of cheapness of construction and the possibility of producing a very great variety of forms with a minimum number of'parts. For almost any desired shape of hat, no more than three parts need ever be used. 2'. e. the two fairly stiff members and the collapsible soft intermediate member. These three members may be out in a great variety of shapes so as to produce the desired final hat contour.

What I claim is:

' 1.
