Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 23, 1917. Serial No. 187,867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED N. OLsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rock Rapids, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Insect-Traps and Screen-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined screens and insect traps, more particularly for use in connection with screen doors, but which may be used in connection with window screens and other similaropenings.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a combined trap and screen which takes the place of a portion of the upper part or panel of the screen material of a screen door to prevent the entrance of flies and other insects when the door is opened.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the insects are trapped and the device arranged to be detached from the screen frame and opened to permit the destruction and removal of the trapped insects.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is an elevation from the interior of a screen door with the improved device applied;
Fig. 2 is a section enlarged on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts in open position;
Fig. 4: is an elevation from the exterior of a screen door with the improved device applied and including the door frame;
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the improved device engaged with the screen frame and the latter attached to the door frame, the screen frame and door frame being in section on V frame or to screen frames employed in any specific form of opening. In the drawings employed to illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention the members of the screen frame are represented at 10, and the door frame members at 11.
The screen frame is divided near the up per part by a transverse member 12 into a relatively small upper panel and relatively large lower panels. The lower panels are covered with screen material indicated at 13.
Fitting within the panel above the transverse member 12 is a frame device formed in coacting oblong portions indicated at 1415 hingedly united at one edge, as shown at 16, and provided with a suitable catch represented at 17 at the opposite edge to hold the members 14 -15 in closed position. The outer face of the frame member 15 is entirely covered with screen material, indicated at 18, while the frame 1 1 is covered for the major portion of its outer face with screen material represented at 19. A hold ing rod 20 extends between the side members of the frame 14 and spaced above the lower edge of the same, while a similar rod 21 extends across the frame 15 in the same manner. When the members lei-15 are disposed in closed position as shown in Fig. 2 the rods 2021 are spaced at a relatively short distance. The screen material 19 is extended inwardly and thence upwardly as shown at 22, and connected to the rod 20, thus forming an upwardly opening pocket or trap space indicated at 23. Extending between the rod 21 and the lower member of the frame 15 at its inner face is a section of screen material represented at 24:, the section 24: being spaced from a portion of the screen material 18 and forming a pocket like receptacle 25 similar to the receptacle or pocket 23. By this means a relatively contracted space, indicated at 26 is formed between the lower bent portion of the screen material 19 and the lower member of the frame 14:. When the frame members 14-15 are disposed in their closed position as shown in Fig. 2, the insects enter through the contracted space 26 and thence crawl upwardly over the surface of the screen downwardly they pass into the pockets 23 and 25, and are thus trapped. The insects will not attempt to escape by passing downwardly intothe narrow space between the Stop members or cleats 29 are. attached to the frame 10 and project over the adjacent portions of the frame 15, and thus prevent the displacement of the device in: the opposite direction. The stops 27, cleats 29 and buttons28t11us cooperate to detachably support the improved device in the frame 10.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured of any required size and of any suitable material to adapt it to door or window screen frames of any suitable size or structure.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a combined screen and insect trap, coacting frames movably united face to face, webs of screen material covering the entire outer face and a portion of the inner face of one of said coacting. frames, and webs' of screen material covering a part of the outer face and a part of the inner face of the other of said coacting frames, thelast mentioned webs of screen material being united at their lower edges and spaced from the adjacent frame member.
2. In a combined screen and insect trap, coacting frames movably united face to face,
adjacentframe members, and the other rod supported webs united at its free edge to the free edge of the first mentioned web and spaced from the adjacent frame member.
3. In a combined screen and insect trap, coacting frames movably united face toface and adapted to. be supported in a doorway opening. webs of screen material covering the entire outer face and a portion of the inner face of one of said coacting frames, webs of screen material covering a; part of the outer face and apart of the inner face of the other of said coacting frames, the last mentioned webs of screen material being united at their lower edges and spaced from the adjacent frame member, and laterally extending stop flanges carried by one of said frames.
