To all whom/ may concern.' j j Be it known that I, .Grues B. DoUD, a citizen of the United States, resident of Vinona, in the county of vWinona and State of Minnesota, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Refrigerators; and l declare the following to be a` full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the refrigerator on the line 1-1 Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the trays.
Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of one of the strap hinges.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the hinge pintles.
Fig. 6 is a detail section on the line 6 6 Fig. 1.
The invention has relation to an improvement in refrigerators, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
rlhe object 0f the invention, primarily, is to provide quadrant-form shelves of maximum capacity, which when swung outwardlyv through an arc of ninety degrees .may be slid upwardly and removed.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 indicates the case, having a chamber provided with a back wall 3 and two side walls 4, 4, which extend vertically upward sheer from the bottom to the top, the front wall of the casing being provided with an opening 5 for a hinged door 6.
In the chamber are swinging trays 8, arranged in series one above another, these trays being of quadrant contour and hinged usually to the jamb of the doorway. The straight radial sides 9 of each tray are nearly as long as the doorway is wide, and are at right angles with each other, being connected by a curved wall 12, which is provided with a number of openings 13 for the passage of air, said openings being preferably comparatively large and arranged in zig-Zag relation, in order to provide for better circulation of the air. The bottom of the tray consists of a grating 14, and its Specicaton of Letters Patent.

side walls are preferably made integral, of sheet metal. Each tray has a hinge eye 15, usually made of strap metal, the central portion of the strap being bent into eye form and the strap branches being in contact to form a. short shank 16 from the eye to their right-angular divergence at a point 17 just inside the angle of the tray wall, these branches from this point extending, one, 18, in the plane of the shank, and the other, 19, at right angles thereto. There are preferably two hinge eyes, one above the other, to each tray. The short shank is of a length equal to the thickness of and extends through a slot 21 in the wall of the tray at one side and immediately adjacent to the angular bend thereof, in bracing engagement with the walls or edges of the slot 21, the straight branch 18 being solidly riveted or comiected to the front wall of the tray and the right-angle branch to its lateral wall. These hinge members are therefore strongly fastened to the walls of the tray and, extending along the same in parallel relation, serve to brace the walls and hold them from sagging. The complementary pintle members 22 of the hinges are arranged in vertical series and secured to the inner part of the jamb of the casing doorway, having reduced, laterally offset lower portions from which the pintles extend upwardly. rlhe shank and body of each hinge eye is offset laterally in such manner that the outer sides of both radial walls of each shelf are made substantially tangential thereto, the top of each hinge pintle being spaced apart from the bottom of the lower reduced portion of the hinge member 22 next thereabove by a distance slightly greater than the thickness of a hinge eye 15, so that when the lower tray is swung outward through the doorway it can be cleared from the tray above it, being in this way easily disconnected by lifting it from the pintle or from the casing members of the hinges for removal when required, and when turned back into the chamber of the refrigerator the offset shank 16 and the branch 18 in line therewith are brought inward to position just back of and parallelto the door when closed. As stated, two hinge eyes are usually provided for each tray, these eyes engaging separate slots 21 of the tray and pivoting upon separate hinge pintles, the tray being in this way better supported against sagging. rlhese movable quadrant-form shelves located in rear of said doorway, in close relation to i trays are designed to facilitate inspection and access to their contents, and as they'are independently movable and removable, tend to keep the contents of the refrigerator in orderly arrangement and to provide against unnecessary inflow of warm air through the Y doorway.
When the trays are removed from the refrigerator chamber, leaving the sheer vertical walls, there is no obstruction to minute inspection of these walls, and thorough cleansing is facilitated.
What I claim is In a refrigerator, a casing having a doorway and a lateral wall provided with a vertical series of hinge members having respectively laterally offset reduced lower portions and hinge pintles projecting upwardly from said reduced portions and spaced apart from each other, a hinged door engaging said doorway, a series of overlying releach other and having each radial walls,
one of said walls having 'perforations, hingestraps located upon the inner side of and .secured to the radial walls of each shelf, said straps each centrally doubled andghaving a short shank of a length equal to the thickness of and engaging the perforations of a radial shelf wall, and hinge eyes spaced apart and located immediately adjacent to and in contact with the shelf corners, said Shanks and said eyes laterally offset and the outersides Vof both radial walls of each shelf tangential tothe hinge eyes relating thereto, the top of each hinge pintle being spaced apart from the bottom of the hinge member next `thereabove by a distance slightly greater than the thickness of a hinge eye.
