CHARLES J. BAUIVIGARTNER, 0F ERIN TOWNSHIP, MACOMB COUNTY, MICHIGAN.
FLUE-CLOSURE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J. BAUM- GARTNER, a citizen of the United'States of America, residing atErin township, in the county of Macomb and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flue-Closures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a flue closure, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a double closure that can be easily and quickly installed to prevent wind, soot or other elements from passing through a flue or stovepipe hole when not in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide inner and outer closure members for the ends of a stovepipe hole or flue, and to connect the members so that both members will be frictionally held in engagement with the faces of a wall having a flue or stovepipe hole therein.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive flue closure wherein effective means are employed for holding the closure members, particularly when installing the same, and I attain this and the above objects by a me chanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a wall having a flue and provided with the preferred form of closure;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the outer closure member;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of a wall having a flue provided with a modified form of closure;
Fig. 4: is a front elevation of an outer closure illustrating a modification of my invention, and
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the inner closure member shown in Fig. 3.
The outer closure member comprises two semi-circular plates 1 and 2 with the straight edge of the plate 1 overlappin the straight edge of the plate 2, so as to orm substantially a disk or circular plate. The inner faces of the plates 1 and 2 are connected by hinges 3 and 4 so that the plates 1 and 2 may be folded toward each other, and in this manner the outer closure member collapsed in order that it may be placed through a stovepipe hole 5 in a wall 6,

opened in the chimney flue 7 and placed against the outer face of the wall 6, as best shown in Fig. 1. To facilitate placing this member in position and temporarily holding the same, the plates 1 and 2 have resilient clips 8 adapted to frictionally engage the walls of the stovepipe hole or open ing 5.
The inner member is in the form of a circular plate or disk 9 adapted for engagement with the inner face of the wall 6 so as to seal the inner end of the hole or opening 5. The member 9 has an inwardly projectin central hook 10 and adapted to connect this hook and the hinge 4 of the outer member is a coiled retractile spring 11. The end of the spring 11 is detachable relative to the hook 10 and said spring is of suficient length to permit of the free end thereof being extended and easily placed in engagement with the hook 10, so that when it is released, the retractile force thereof will positively hold the inner and outer members against the wall 6, causing the marginal edges of both members to positively seal the ends of the hole or opening 5.
In Figs. 1 and 5 of the drawing, there is illustrated a slight modification of my invention in connection with both of the closure members. The plates of the outer closure member are provided with semicircular clips or retaining members 12 adapted for engagement with the walls of the hole or opening 5 and the inner member has bowed resilient or spring members 13 adapted to properly center the inner member relative to the axis or center of the hole or opening 5.
The flue closure in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal with the inner closure member finished to present a neat appearance, and while in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes, in size, shape and manner of assemblage, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A flue closure adapted for sealing the inner and outer ends of a stovepipe hole, comprising inner and outer members, the outer member composed of two semi-circular plates foldable relative to each other and when open of a greater diameter than the diameter of the stove pipe hole so as to outer face of the Wall, retaining members carried by said outer member and adapted to engage the Walls of the Stovepipe hole, and a retractile spring connected to a hinge of the outer member and adapted to be attached to the inner member.
In Witness whereof I afiix my signature 20 in the presence of-two witnesses.
CHARLES J. BAUMGARTNER.
