I 'rnolvrns H.
HUsroN, or sHnLn vrLLnJLLInoIs, ASSIGNdR, F own-HALF ro WALTER G. HEADEN, OF SHELBYYILLE, ILLINOIS.
' citizen of theUnited States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State, of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F Inc-Stoppers; and I do declare thefollowing to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the lllVGIltlOIl,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates Ito flue stoppers, and more especially to that class of the latter which employs a thin'nble in con unction with a cap piece.
One object of my invention resides in providing a flue stopper, and i cap thereforl having'means cooperating wlth certain other means carried by the flue stopper for withdrawing the latter from its seat, so that all possibility of soiled hands and other annoyances usually are eliminated.
Another object of this invention resides in producing a flue stopper and cap which are efficient in operation, simple in construction, and particularly Well adapted for the function hereinafter tojbe ascribed to them.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary section of a chimney with my improved flue stopper disposed" therein.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section illustrating the means for removingthe thimble.
Fig. 3 is a similar View taken at right angles to that of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end elevatlon of my improved stopper illustratmg my improved locking tongues. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the thimble 1 comprises a sheet metal I body :2 bent into cylindrical formand having its meeting edges brought into engagement and bent into anin'terlocking joint '3. In order to permanently close the inner,
end of the thimble 1, I slash the cylindrical body 2 around its edge so as to form a plu rality. of tongues 4. The alternate tongues 4 I bend inwardly and at right angles to the cylinder to provide a seat for the head or closing member 5 which is seated thereon.
Specification of Iietters Patent: 3 e PafenteflD 1 Application filed December 29, 1913. se ial No; 809,291.
i would be subject to the disadvantage stated, the head 5 cannot drop from the cylinder and thereby destroy the utility of the inresulting from "this operation drawal of the same,
if The remaining tongues 6 are then projected Be it -k'nownthatl, THOMAS H. Hios'ron,v
in a similar direction and brought into en- 1 the chimney with the closed end adjacent the chimney flue, the head 5 must be securely fastened by some means absolutely .un-
affected by heat; consequently by providing the" tongues as above set forth in place'of solder or other connecting means which vention by permitting the dirt and soot of the chimney to enter the room.
A cap 7, having a diameter slightly greater than that. of the thimble 1, closes the outer end of the same, and when said thimble is placed in position gwithinf'the stove pipeopenmg, it projects laterally beyond the ad acent end of the latter, cover ing it completely as well as eliminating the l nsightly open end of the thimble, thereby rendering a finished appearance to the room.
To retain the cap ln'positionupon the thimble 1 as well as to facilitate the ready with n I' strike the two diametrically disposed inwardly projecting tongues 8 from the outer edge of said cylindrical body 2, and-at a central point on the inner surface of the cap 7 I secure a bowed leaf spring 9 which is intended to "project within said thimble and'have its ends bear against the inner surface thereof and by its resiliency hold the cap in position. In addition to maintaining the cap 7 in powithdrawal of the thimble from itsseat, in-
asmuch as when cap 7 is partly withdrawn drawal of the cap will also remove the {thimble as will be readily understood without further description. Thus it will be seen that by providing the cap 7 in addition to the head 5, the unsightly open end of the thimble is avoided and means provided for the removal of the'thimble when it is de sired to replace'the latter with'a stove pipe.
j with the tongues-8 so that furtherwithlit) sition, the tongues 8 also serve another pur-. pose, thatis, they provide means for the w Copies of; this patent may be obtained for From the foregoing'it will be seen that the thimble and cap therefor when inserted inthe; stove pipe opening thoroughly and practically close the same, and prevent'soot or fire from gaining access to the room.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing'from the principle or sacrificinganyof the advantages of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is: v 1'. In a device of the character described, the combination witha thimble having a closure at the inner end thereof and pro-1.
-..vid ed-,,With inwardly projecting tongues disposed at opposite points on its inner .sur-
face adjacent its outer end; of a cap closing theopen end of said thimble, the outer edge of said cap extending laterally beyond "the outer end of the latter, and 'a bowed leafspring secured intermediate its ends to the central portion of said cap, the extremltles ofisaid spring extendingto and bearing against the sides of said thimble whereby when said cap is partly withdrawn andrethimble.
volved, said extremities wilhfrictionally engag'e said tongues for the removal of said 2. In 'a device of central portion of said cap, the extremities of said spring extending to and; bearing againstfthe sides of the said thimble whereby when said cap is partly withdrawnand revolved, said extremities Willfr-ictionally engage said tongues for the removal of said,
the character described, a the combination with a thimble having inwardly projecting tongues. disposed at opposite points on 'itsinner surface.contiguoils to its outer end, of a cap closing the ,outer end of said thimble, and a bowed leaf spring secured intermediate its ends to the five cents eac h, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,"
