`Be it known that we, Louis B. @romanas and NATHAN GOLDBERG, `citizens oi the United States, residing at Denver, Colorado, the city and county ot Denver and State of Golorado, have invented certain new and useful llmprovemens in Film-Reels; and wel simple and economical and which shall ebil ciently perform the function of a reel oi this character Our novel features relate more particularly to the means tor securing the duplex spring member mounted on the hub of the reel, in place and in operative relation, the construction ci the hub being such that the extremitiesof the nlm-holding spring may remain straight or in the normal curve ot the body portions of the device as distinct from a construction in which these extremities are curved upwardly. ln constructions where the extremities ot the spring are curved up-` wardly for the purpose of facilitating the attachment of the nlm extremity ot the spring, these spring extremities are very liable to injure the hlm by breaking or forming holes in one or more ot the convo lutions of the hlm. lln our improved construction the straight or normally curved extremities occupy positions over recesses or openings in the hub ot the reel, these recesses or openings giving the operator an opportunity to insert his nger for the purpose of lifting the spring member sumciently to attach the end ot the lm. Ainother feature of novelty consists in a spring locking key for maintaining the duplex nlm holding spring in place upon the hub.

Having briey outlined our improvements we will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which is 'illustrated "an embodiment thereof.

Let the numeral 5 designate the reel, consldered in its entirety, and composed oit two end disks or heads t arranged on opposite sides of a spacing hub l which'is secured to the heads in any suitable manner as by the employment ot short lugs 8 termed on the extremities which are normally open, be-

ing approximately closed by the adjacent head plates 6. ls shown in the drawing, the heads are centrally perforated to receive a centrally located tube 9 whose opposite extremities are upset to secure the tube in place upon the heads.

'lhe hub is provided, at a suitable location centrally between the two heads, with an opening l0 adapted to receive the central inwardly odset part l2 of a spring clip i3 having members la extending in opposite directions from the part l2. The odset part l2 is adapted to enter the opening l0 and when in position as shown in lFigs. l, 2 and 3, the odset part l2 extends slightly below the wall of the hub or inwardly therefrom, leaving a space between the oilset and the wall of the hub for the introduction ot a spring locking key l5, vone extremity ot' which is bent as shown at i6 forming a projection extending approximately at right angles to the body member of the key.. inwardly tofacilitate its insertion or introduction into the space between the offset 12 and the wall of the hub, while between the extremities 16 and 17, the key is bowed slightly downwardly or inwardly, as shown at 18, in order to exert an inward pressure on 'the offset 12, whereby the -bend 19 of the key and the adjacent part of the extremity 16, are caused to enter a recess 20 formed in one of the heads 6 which is cut as shown at 21, after which a lip 22 is pressed outwardly forming a recess of suiicient depth to receive the bend 19 of the key, the part 16 being allowed to enter the recess far enough to lock the key securely in place against removal, after it has once been inserted. It will be understood that there isno necessity for removing this key except when the' duplex spring clip 13 is broken, and when this occurs, it is an easy matter to remove the locking key for the purpose of applying a new spring clip. The locking key may be used indefinitely since there is practically no wear upon it, neither is there any tendency to break it. Consequently it may be employed with an indefinite number of spring clips, the latter being the only feay ture of the device upon which thereis any particular wear or tendency to breakage. The free extremities 26 of the spring clips lie in the same curve as the members 14 thereof and occupy positions above recesses or depressions or openings, which gives the operator an opportunity to insert the end of his linger for the purpose of lifting the extremity 26 of the clip for the purpose of connecting the end of the film therewith, thus avoiding the necessity of providing upwardly or outwardly turned ends for this purpose. Our construction, as heretofore stated, is exceedingly advantageous by reason of the fact that there is no tendency to l break or injure the ilm'since there is only the thickness of the metal of which the duplex spring clip is composed which extends beyond the outer surface of the hub, thus allowing the convolutions of the film as it is wound on the reel, to lie practically fiat or parallel with the wall of the hub. It is evident that either depressions 23 or openings 24 formed in the hub will answer the purpose, hence it will be understood that the invention is not limited to any particular form, whether it bean Opening formed by cutting out the metal or a depression or recess formed by pressing a portion of the metal inwardly at proper locations adjacent the free extremities 26 of the duplex spring clip.

From the foregoing description the use and operation of our improved lm reel will be readily understood. After the heads and the hub have been assembled, the duplex spring clip is applied to the hub by introducing its offset part 12 into the opening 10,

art 12 and the insure on the bent end 16 of the key continuing until this end 1 6 occupies a position directly opposite the recess 20 of the adjacent head 6. As soon as this occurs the 'bend 19 and the extremity 16 of the key will spring automatically into the recess 20, whereby the key is locked against removal as long as the spring clip remains intact. It will be understood that the opening 25 below the free edge of the offset part 22 is slightlylower or nearer the center of the hub than the space between the offset 12`and the inner surface of the wall of the hub. Furthermore as the key 15 is bowed slightly inwar ly, as shown at 18, there will be two forces acting to cause the bent end 16 of the key to enter the recess 20, one bein the tension under which the key is placedy virtue of the engagement of its bowed part 18 with the offset part 12 of the spring, and the other being the fact that the opening 25 is slightly below the space between the offset 12 and the inner surface of the hub which the inner portion of the key enters.

After the parts are assembled as heretofore explained, it will be understood that the operator may insert the end of a finger in the depression 23 or the opening 24, and lift the end 22 of the spring clip for the purpose of connecting the end of the lm therewith.

Attention is called'to the fact that each of the heads 6 is provided with an opening 25 and an outwardly extending housing member 22 forming a recess 20 to receive a portion of the outer end of the locking key. By virtue of this construction the key may be inserted from either side of the reel. Of course, when the aforesaid features of one head are utilized, the corresponding features of the other head are idle. The duplicating of said features in the two heads is simply for the convenience of the operator.

Attention is called to the fact that while the key 15 is normally locked against accidental removal, it may be removed by the use of a pair of pliers even when the duplex spring clip 18 remains intact, if for any reason it may be desirable or necessary to do so. This could be done `by grasping the exposed projection or the exposed part of the projection 16 by the jaws of the pliers and pulling inwardly toward the axis of the reel which would result in springing the key menace 'sufiiciently to enable the operator to then remove it by an outward pull.

Having described our invention what we claim is:

1. A reel of the class described comprising two heads, an interposed hub, one of the heads having an opening, the hub also having an opening, a clip having an offset part entering said opening in the hub and a key passing through the opening in the head and engaging the odset of the clip'in securing relation.

2. A reel of the class described comprising a pair of heads, an interposed hub, one of the heads having an opening, the hub also having an opening, a duplex springV clip having an offset part aranged centrally of its length said part entering said opening in the hub, and a key passing through the opening in the said head and engaging the offset of the clip adjacent the opening in the hub.

3. A reel comprising two heads, an interposed hub to which the heads are secured, one of the heads having an opening and also provided with a housing part extending outwardly therefrom adjacent said opening, the latter extending slightly inwardly toward the axis beyond the inner edge of the housing part, the hub also having an opening, a clip having an offset part entering said opening and a key passing through the opening in the head and engaging the clip, the outer extremity of the key abutting against the said housing of the head.

4. A reel comprising two heads, an interposed hub to which the heads are secured, one of the heads having an opening and also provided with a housing part extending outwardly therefrom adjacent said opening, the latter extending slightly inwardly toward the reel axis beyond the inner edge of the housing part, the hub also having an opening, a clip having an offset part entering said opening in the hub and a key passing through the opening in the hub and engaging said clip, the outer extremity of the key abutting against said housing of the head and the outer' extremity of said key having a part extending approximately at right angles to the body of the key, said last named part projecting inwardly toward the reel axis from the'inner edge of the housing when the key is in place.

5. A reel of the class described comprising a pair of heads, an interposed hub to which the heads are secured, one of the heads having an opening and a housing extending away from the opening, the latter extending inwardly slightly beyond the free edge of the housing, a clip having an offset part entering the opening in the hub, and a key passing through the opening in the head and. engaging the offset of the clip, the outer end `of the key abutting against said housing, the said key having a part inwardly bowed between its extremities.

6. A reel comprising a hub, two heads applied to the opposite ends of the hub, the latter having an opening, one of the heads also having an opening, a clip having an odset entering the opening in the hub and a key passing through the opening in the said head and having an inwardly bowed part engaging the offset part of the clip.

7 A reel composed of a hub and heads arranged on opposite sides thereof, the hub having an opening, a clip having an offset part entering said opening and secured therein, the hub being shaped beneath the free extremity of the clip to permit the introduction of the finger to lift the extremity of the clip for the purpose set forth.

8. A reel comprising two heads, an interposed hub and a duplex clip applied to the hub and extending part way around the same, the hub having openings adjacent the free extremities of the clip and the said clip extremities overlying but not projecting into the respective openings.

9. A reel comprising a hub and a pair of heads spaced by .the hub, a duplex spring clip having a centrally located odset, the hub having an opening which said odset engages, means for securing the clip in place on the hub, the latter having depressions beneath the free extremities of the clip.

10. A reel whose hub is equipped with a clip, the hub having a cavity beneath the free extremity of the clip, and open below and beyond the latter for the purpose set forth. l

11. A reel whose hub is equipped with a clip, the surface of the hub being open beneath the free extremity of the said clip.
