Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. CARTER, of Brattleboro, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Film-Reels and Casings Therefor, of which Vthe following is a specification.
It is necessary that motion picture lms, being of a highly iniiammable character, should be put in metal cases, either for storing or shipping, to protect surrounding property from excessive damage in case of fire, and to protect the film itself. The common method of now doing this is to put each film in a separate can, this can having a cover. y
To overcome the expense andinconvenience of this method, it hasheretofore been proposed to provide a sectional flanged rim Yto surround imperforate disks of a motion picture reel, and thus combine the reel and rim to form a casing. Methods of this character as thus far developed are impracticable for several reasons, among which are, the presence of an extraneous locking device, inade necessary by a plurality of parts, and the flanges as provided being incapable of-standing the wear of constant usage, the projecting ianges becoming loosened by be- Ying forced vapart to admit the reel, also becoming dented or otherwise damaged so that ya iame could easily get through to the film.
The present invention has for its object the overcomingof these difficulties and the vproduction of a construction practicable in everyr respect, while being :economical to manufacture.

Securedto a hub A, are two imperforate `metallic disks B and C, which serve as the Ysides ofthe completed casing, hereafter described, as well as the heads of the reel upon which the iilm is wound. The reel is pro- Ivided with means forleading `the film upon .the hub, shown in detail in 3, to consist of a web a, one end of which is rolled as shown at Z, and the convolutions of which are fastened with a staple c, this roll being passed endwise into a slotted cavity d, in the hub A, before both disks are secured to the hub, and the free end of the web a, leads out through the slot. This free end is long enough to extend beyond the peripheries of the disks B and C, and has secured thereto a clip e, into which the film is placed prior to its being wound upon the reel. The film maybe wound up by rotating the reel in either direction.
Fitting around the peripheries of the disks B and C, is a one-piece iniperforate metallic, ban'dD. This band D, is provided at its edges with specially formed,-inwardly opening grooves E and F. At each side vthe band is provided with a rim a, with an inturned edge thereby constituting the grooves E, and F. Each inturned edge is wrapped around a reinforcing wire G. The effect of this wire is not only to strengthen the construction but also to maintain resilience in the band which aidsin the effective clasping of the reel and the keeping of the band D, in closed position when so placed.
Coperating with these grooves E and F, are the'outwardly flared peripheral flanges H, of the disks B and C, as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. These flanges are made of the size and shape to lit positively and accurately in the grooves of the band D, when it is brought around them and closed. The film wound upon the reel holds the disks out- ,wardly and accordingly Vthe edges of the disks haveto be sprung inwardly slightly kwhen they are tted into the grooves E and F.
This causes the flanges H,- to fit securely in the grooves E and F, and insures an effective Consequently the band rims are sprung over the flanges and hence resiliently interlocked therewith. This causes the disks to snugly engage the inclosed filmV and the peripheries of the disk are prevented from spreading apart.
The band D, is also provided at the juncture of its'two ends with integral overlapping tongues I and J, one on each end of the band and which are in reality continuations of the central body of the band. Located at the bases of the tongues I and J are two rivets K and L, sliding in opposite slots M and N, in the tongues. The lapping of the tongues over and under the band, as illustrated in Fig. 5, forms a friction lock which is adequate in its holding, aided by the resilience of the wires G, as described. rl`his overlapping of the tongues also permits the ends of the grooves and wires to come together as shown in Figs. l, el and G, and thisn covers the only hole through which a flame could possibly get. The purpose. of the rivets is to keep the tongues from going askew or becoming bent '1n a way not to be effective.
The friction of the overlapping tongues, and the friction of the iiared edges of the disks pressing into the grooves of the band render it practically impossible for this band to be knocked off, or accidentally sprung off', from the reel in the handling of the closed case,
To remove the reel from the casing it is only necessary to grip the band near the juncture of its ends and separate the ends to the extent of the grooves M and N, whereupon the reel readily slips out, there being nothing holding it. After the reel is removed the band closes itself by reason of the resilience of the wires. It can then be hung anywhere in the room until needed. To put the reel in the band, it is only necessary to reverse the above procedure, and as a test of whether the reel is properly in place in the band, the user need only see that the ends of the edges of the band meet, as heretofore described, and as shown in Figs. l and 4t of the drawings.
I claiml. A case for a motion picture film consisting of a motion picture reel comprising a hub having attached at each end an imperforate metallic disk having its periphery outwardly flared, and means for leading a film around said hub, in combination with a one-piece metallic band fitting entirely around thel peripheries of said disks, provided with specially formed inwardly opening grooves and a wire on each extreme outer edge forming a reinforcing resilient rim for each side of the band, said grooves cooperating with the iiared peripheries of said metallic disks, said band also being provided, at its terminals, with integral tongues which overlap each other, a rivet at the base of each tongue, each tongue having therein a slot which cooperates in sliding engagement with the rivet at the base of the other tongue.
A case4 for a motion picture film cony sisting of a reel comprising a hub having attached at each end an mperforate disk have ing its periphery flared, in combination with a one-piece band fitting entirely around the peripheries of said disks, provided with specially formed inwardly opening grooves and a wire on each eXtreme outer edge forming a reinforcing resilient rim for each side of the band, said grooves coperating with the flared peripheries of said disks, said band being provided, at its terminals, with integral tongues which overlap each other, a rivet at the base of each tongue, each tongue having a. :slot which cooperates in sliding engagement with the rivet at the base of the other tongue.
3. A case for a motion picture film consisting of a reel comprising a hub having attached at leach end an imperforate disk having its periphery flared, in combination with a band fitting entirely around the peripheries of said disks, having specially formed grooves and a reinforcing resilient rim for each side of the band, said grooves coperating with the flared peripheries of said disks, said 'band also having integral tongues which overlap each other, a. rivet at the base of each tongue, each tongue having therein aslot which coperates in sliding engagement with the rivet at the base of the other tongue.
4. A case for a motion picture film consisting of a reel comprising a hub and side disks, in combination with an integral resilient band fitting entirely around the peripheries of said disks and having therein grooves cooperating with the peripheries of said disks, said band also having at its meeting terminals integral tongues which overlap each other, each tongue having an elongated slot, and a rivet secured near the base of each tongue fitting in the slot of the opposing tongue.
5. A case for a motion-picture lm comprising a hub having attached at each end an imperforate metallic disk having at its periphery an outwardly flaring resilient iiange, in combination with a one piece imperforate metallic band extending completely around the peripheries of the disks with its ends overlapping andthere provided with interengaging sliding connections, said band having at each side a rim with an inturned edge forming a groove to receive the corresponding disk iange, each of said inturned rim edges resiliently interlocking with the adjacent disk flange, and a reinforcing wire at each edge of the band.

A case for a motion-picture film comprising a hub having attached at each end an imperforate metallic disk having atits periphery an outwardly Haring resilient ange, in combination with a one piece imyperforate metallic band extending completely around the peripheries of the disks with its'ends overlapping and there provided with interengaging sliding connections, said band having at each side a rim with an inresiliently turned edge forming a groove to receive the corresponding disk ange, each of said inturned rim edges resiliently interlocking with the adjacent disk flange.
7 A case for a motion-picture ilm comprising a hub having attached at each end an imperforate metallic disk having at its periphery an outwardly Haring resilient flange, in combination with a one piece imperforate metallic band extending completely around the peripheries of the disks and having at each side a rim with an inturned edge forming a groove to receive the Corresponding disk flange, each of said inturned rim edges interlocking with the adjacent disk flange.
8. A case for a motion-picture film comprising a hub having attached at each end a metallic disk having at its periphery an outwardly flaring resilient ange, in comhination with a one piece metallic Iloand extending completely around the peripheries of the disks and having at each side a rim with an inturned edge forming a groove to receive the corresponding disk iange, each of said inturned rim edges resiliently inter-Y locking with the adjacent disk flange.
9. A case for a motion-picture iilm comprising a hub having attached at each end a metallic disk, in combination with a one piece Ymetallic 'band extending completely around the peripheries of the disks, said band having at each side a rim with an inturned edge forming a. groove to receive the corresponding disk periphery, and a reinforcing wire at each edge of the band.
10. A case for a motion-picture iilIn comprising a hub having attached at each end an imperforate metallic disk, in combination with a one piece imperi-'crate metallic band extending completely around the peripheries of the disks with its ends overlapping and there provided with interengaging sliding connections.
