UNIVERSAL BASE FOR PIPE-VISES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 191' '7'.
Application filed October 5, 1914. Serial-No. 865,108.
To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that. I, HARRY S. KUHN, a citizen of the United States, residingat lVaynesboro, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Universal Base for Pipe-Vises, of which the'following is a specification.
It is the object of this. invention to provide novel means whereby the stem of a pipe vise may be mounted in a holding casing in rectangularly disposed positions, novel means being provided for holding the stem against rotation, and against movmg enclwise, when the stem is in either of said positions.
Another object of the invention is to simplify and to improve devices of the sort shown in this application and hereinafter described.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete base.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. l is a sectional view through the base and the adjacent portion of the head of the vise showing the same in one position.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the base or securing member proper of the present device, which has cast integral therewith the two outstanding parallel ribs 2 which support the shelf 3 which in turn carries the disk member 4 while formed integral with the outer face of the ribs at right angles to the disk at is a similar shaped disk member 6. The disk member 4 is provided with the concentric opening 5, which is alined with the opening 10 of the web 11 formed within the present device so that the stem 17 of the head 15 of the vise may be introduced therethrough as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. The disk member 6 is provided with the concentric opening 7, which. is at right angles to the opening 5 and is alined with the opening 7. of the base 1, so that. the head 15 may be mounted at right angles to that shown in Fig. 4.
In order to provide a means for locking the head in either one of the positions: in which it is capable of being adjusted, a screw threaded bore 8 is provided through one side of one of the plates 2 in line with either one of the openings 5 or 7 the same being so constructed as to receive the set screw 9 which is readily manipulated from the side of the present device. Thus when the head 15 of the vise is in proper position, the end of the set screw will engage the tubular support thereof so as to lock the same against longitudinal movement within the present base.
In order to lock the head 15 against rotary movement relatively to either one of the disks 4 or 6, the respective disks are each provided with the Vshaped members 12, which provide the triangular recessed portions 18 for receiving respectively the recesses 16 and V-shaped members lat of the head 15.
Thus it will be seen that the head may be adjusted in any angular position relative to the disks 4: and 6, and that the same will be held against longitudinal movement by means of the set screw 9.
The device forming the subject matter of this application embodies a box-like casing including a front 6, a back 1, a top 3 and sides 2, the top 3 and the bottom 11 being provided with concentric primary openings 510, and the front 6 and the back 1 being provided with concentric secondary openings 7-7. A stem 17 is adapted to be mounted selectively in the primary openings 510 and in the secondary openings 77, the stem 17 having a circumscribing groove 50 and being provided with a head 15, the head being adapted for selective abutment against the top 3 and the front 6, thereby to position the groove 50 in either of two planes, one of which passes through the axis of the primary openings 510, the other of which passes through the axis of the secondary openings 77. A longitudinally movable securing device represented by the screw 9 is disposed in one side wall 2, the axis of the screw coinciding with the line of intersection of the planes above mentioned. The head 15 upon the one hand and the top 3 and the front 6 upon the other hand being provided, as clearly shown in the drawings, With coacting elements preventing a rotation of the stem 17, the screw 9 engaging in the groove 50, to hold said coacting elements interengaged.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described embodying a base having two faces at an angle with each other and sockets extending from said faces and intersecting one another, a head seatable against either face and having a stem insertible into either socket, said faces and head having means interengageable at various angular positions of the head when the head is brought against either face to prevent the rotation of the head, said stem having an annular groove brought to the point of intersection of the sockets when the stem is inserted in either socket and the head brought against the corresponding face, and a screw carried by the base and projecting toward the point of intersection of the sockets to engage said groove when the stem is inserted in either socket and the head brought. against the corresponding face.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HARRY S. KUHN.
