LOCKING VALVE.
APPLICATION HLED MAR. 10. 1915.

WEED SWATE PATENT @FFEQE.
CHARLES R. TOBIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
LOCKING-VALVE.
Application filed March 10, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES R. TOBIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking- Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locking valves, and comprises particularly a valve adapted to be used where a fluid, such for example as gas, is desired to be drawn through each of two meters, to the same stove or burner. Thus in apartment houses a stove is often provided for the common use of tenants to be supplied at one time through the meter of one tenant, and at another time through the meter of another tenant.
The object of the present invention is to provide a valve which will permit either tenant to obtain a supply from his meter or connection, and prevent him from obtaining a supply from the connection of the other tenant.
Therefore I provide a three-way valve adapted to be connected to two sources of supply and leading to a single stove or device, and provided with locks so that it can only be opened to the proper connection.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the valve. Fig. 2 is a section showing the valve in locked position. Fig. 3 is a section showing the valve open one way and locked the other, and Fig. 4: is a similar section showing the reversed position. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view. Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are bottom views of the valve, stopped in various positions. Fig. 9 is a plan of a stop washer.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 9 indicates a valve casing having an inlet connection 10 at one side, an inlet connection 12 at the opposite side, and an outlet connection 11 between. In this casing is a threeway plug valve 13 provided with an integral handle 14: by which the. plug may be turned, the passage in the plug being indicated at 21. The handle has a depending projection 15. 16 is a bracket on one side of the valve casing having spaced holes 17 and 18 to re- Specification of Letters Patent.

ceive looks 19 and 20, which may be operated by the respective tenants. At the lower end the plug has a screw stem 22 on which is a stop plate 23, held by a nut 25. The hole 28 in the stop plate is flattened as indicated at 29, to fit against a corresponding flattened part of the screw, so that the stop plate cannot be turned on the screw. The shoulders 26 and 27 on the stop plate cooperate with a pin 24 on the valve casing, to prevent the turn of the valve beyond a certain point in either direction.
The valve may be locked against movement in either direction, as shown in Fig. 2, by placing the shackle of a padlock through each of the holes 17. If the tenant on the side supplied through the inlet 12 wishes to use the stove or device, he removes lock 19 as shown in Fig. 3, and then the plug may be turned to permit flow from the inlet 12 to the outlet 11. At the same time the lock 20, and the stop 24, prevent the plug being turned far enough either way to connect the inlet 10 with the outlet 11.
If the tenant corresponding to the other side wishes to open the valve he removes the lock 20, and a corresponding operation is permitted, and connection to the side of the first mentioned tenant is prevented.
Vhat I claim as new is:
1. A multiway valve provided with separate locking means respectively controlling the movable member of the valve and preventing movement thereof to open either of the ways, and respectively releasable to permit movement of said member to open a corresponding one of the ways.
2. A three way valve having a member movable in opposite directions to connect one of the ways to either of the others, and separate locks for said member arranged to each prevent movement of said member in one direction and permitting its movement in the other. 1
3. A three way valve having a turning plug with a handle movable in opposite directions to open opposite ways, and separate locks located on opposite sides of the handle, each preventing movement of said handle in one direction and permitting its movement in the other, and stops to limit moveother, and means to limit the movement of 10 ment of the plug in either direction. the valve in either direction.
4:. A three Way valve having a turning In testimony Whereof,I afiix my signature plug With a handle movable in opposite diin presence of tWo Witnesses.
' rections to open opposite Ways, and sepa- V CHARLES R. TOBIN. rate locks mounted on the valve on opposlte sides ofthe handle, each in position to pre- Witnesses: vent movement thereof in one of opposite JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, directions and permit its movement in the F. M. TAGGETT.
