specification of Letters Patent Patented one is, an.
application filed Januarya, 1917. ficrial No. MILMG;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM ARTHUR Towns, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to collars of the style comprising a band and a top and the invention has particular reference to the fastening devices in more or less general use for preventing displacement and buckling of the ends of the top of the collar. While the invention has for its object to provide a fastening device for this purpose which will be completely invisible when a collar furnished with it and a tie is being worn. Heretofore collars of this type, whether soft, stifi or semi-stiff, have been more or less out of favor owing to the fact that the ends of the top band shifted or sprung from place and became wrinkled or buckled or the appearance was otherwise deteriorated owing to the looseness of these ends, and if a fastening were used, the tension of it on the ends of the top caused wrinkles to radiate from the points of connection of the fastening device. The object of my invention is also to overcome these defects and provide a collar of this type the ends of the top bands of which will not only fit correctly but present a perfectly smooth top surface, and have no visible connection, the device for attaching the ends of the top band being, according to my invention, attached solely to the lining of the top hand.
More specifically stated the invention consists of a flexible fastening strap preferably consisting of elastic material divided and having one piece carried by the free portion of the lining at one end of the top of the collar and the other piece by the free portion of the lining at the opposite end of the top, and a detachable device connecting the normally free ends of the attachment parts.
The connection between the parts of the attachment and the lining of the top may be either stitching or hooks and eyes; and
i the means of detachably connecting together the parts of the attachment consists preferably of a button and button-hole. The lining is free relatively to the top of the collar excepting at its edges where it is stitched.
For full comprehension, however, of my lnvention reference must be had to the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar,
and a neck-tie with my invention applied to the same; I r
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a collar with points turned up and showing, my in vention applied thereto and fastened;
Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 with my fastening device unfastened;
Fig. 4: is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 55 Fig. 2.
I prefer to make my collar with the outer ply b more or less highly finished and con sisting of linen, cotton, silk or other suitable fabric and the lining c of an inferior but strong material. The liningusually extends throughout the length and breadth of the top band, although for the purpose of my invention the ends only of the top band need be lined. This lining is stitched to the top only at its edges its main portion being free relatively to the latter. I
According to my present invention the attachment strap consists of two short pieces 03 and e respectively, the piece (.5 being preferably attached to the lining of the lefthand end of the top and the piece 6 t0 the lining of the right-hand end, piece 03 having a button-hole f in it and the piece 6 carrying a button 9. These parts (Z and e are connected to the lining of the ends of the collar ton either by stitching, 1, shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5 or hooks 7c and eyes m the former carried by the ends of the attachment device and the latter being carried by the lining of the collar top.
In order to fit a collar provided with my invention, with a neck-tie of either the fourin-hand or the bow style, both parts of the attachment strap, if of the detachable form are first attached to the lining of the ends of the top; the collar is then buttoned to the shirt band in the usual manner with the tie located in the fold between the attachment band and the top. In the preferred embodiment of this invention the parts of my attachment device are connected to the lining by stitching and in this case the attachment device will be permanently carried by the collar and the connection of the attachment strap to the collar as a preliminary step to the fitting of the collar and top, t
neck-tie is not required.- After the collar has been buttoned in place and the tie adjusted and tied the ends of the separate attachinent strap are brought together and buttoned beneath the tie which may be raised to facilitate the action.
What I claim is as follows: 1. The combination with a soft-collar of the type comprising a band and a fold-over e latter consisting of a plurality of plies free from each other exce t at their edges, of a flexible textile stra divided into two parts, one of the parts eing permanently connected to the under ply of one end of the fold-over top and the other part being permanently connected to the under ply of the other end of the fold-over top and means permanently carried by said parts for detachably connecting together the free ends of the said parts.
2. The combination with a soft-collar of the type comprising a band and a fold-over top, t e latter consistin of a plurality of plles free from each ot er except at their edges, of a flexible textile stra divided into two parts, one of the parts eing pennanently' connected to the under ply of one end of the fold-over top and the other part being permanently connected to the under ply of the other end of the fold-over top and means permanently carried by said parts for detachably connecting together the free ends of the said parts, said means consisting of a button and button-hole.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence, of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ARTHUR TOOKE.
Witnesses I WILLIAM J. C. HEWETSON,
C. J. E. NARBONNEAU.
