To all whom it may concern:

Be it known I, IDA M. .BncroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Aprons, of which the following is a specilication.

The invention relates to overgarments for protiicting the dress of the wearer, and the object of the invention is to provide a garment or this character which shall protect the dress and also offer cushioning means for the knees of the wearer in floor-scrubbing and analogous operations in which it is necessary for the wearer to assume kneeling positions.

A further object is to provide means for separably attaching such cushion to such garment and permit the latter to be used alone when the cushion is not required.

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show the invention as it has been carried out in practice and applied to a simple type of apron.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of the apron and its attached cushion, showing its position on a wearer, indicated in dotted lines.

Figure 2 is a corresponding face view of the apron and cushion alone.

Figure 3 is a similar view of the lower portion of the apron, with the cushion detached therefrom.

Figure 4 is a section on a larger scale,-

taken through the lower margin of the apron and upper margin of the cushion, in the detached condition.

Similar reference numerals indicate the same parts in all the figures.

The apron 5 is shown as of the ordinary simple form having an upper or bosom por tion extending above the waist-line, and a skirt-protecting portion below, and provided with a loop 6 of tape on the upper portion adapted to encircle the neck of the wearer, and side strings or tapes 7 adapted to be tied about the body to hold the apron in place.

Any suitable material may be employed,

but for laundry and other wet work it: is preferred'touse rubber cloth or other water proof fabric.

Attached to the lower margin of the skirtprotecting portion of the apron 5 is a rectangular cushion 8 of a length approximating th': width of such portion at such margin, and comprising a closed pocket of suitable width, preferably of the same or other water proof fabric, filled with layers of cotton batting 13 or the like, to provide the desired yielding thickness, and so presented relatively to the wearer as to receive the knees when in tie kneeling position.

The cushion may be permanently joined but for convenience in usingthe apron and cushion independently under some conditions, it is preferred to make the joining detachable. This separable connection is shown as consisting of a line of snap-fas teners comprising a series of sockets 9 on the lower margin of the apron adapted to engage detachably a corresponding series of heads 10 carried by. the cushion, so arranged that the margin of the apron overlaps upon the cushion to deflect water flowing down the former to and upon the outer face of the latter.

'The head portions 10 of the fasteners may be attached directly to the upper margin of the cushion, but for convenience in construction it is preferred to mount them as shown in Figure 4: upon a strip 11 permanently secured to the cushion by a line of stitches at 12.

The apron should be of sufficient length to present the cushiona little below the knees of the wearer so that when a kneeling position is assumed the cushion will liebeneath the knees and offer a yielding support therefor. v

In floor-scrubbing operation the cushion softens the contact of the knfes upon the floor, and automatically follows the movements of the body thereon while permitting freeuse ofthe arms.

Although the invention is shown as applied to a common form of apron it will be understood that the apron may be a cover-. ing garment of any type with means for securing the cushion thereto; and although the invention is designed especially for floor-scrubbing it will be understood that it will serve successfully in any situations in Which the Work to be done necessitates a kneeling posture.

' I claim '1. An apron combined With a cushion attached thereto and relativelylocatecl to support both knees of a wearer when in a kneling position.

2. An apron in combination with a cush ion detachably secured thereto and relatively located to support both knees when he wearer is in a kneeling position.

3. An apron having skirt-protecting portion, and a cushion attached to the lower margin of such portion.

An apron havinga skirt-protecting portion, a cushion, and cooperating engaging means on the lOWvI' margin of such portion and upper margin of said cushion for detachably securing said cushion to said apron.

5. An apron having a skirt-protecting portion, a cushion extended transversely thereof to support both knees of the wearer when in a kneeling position, a strip secured to said cushion along the outer upper margin thereof and cooperating means on said strip and on the lower margin of such portion for detachably securing said strip to said apron.
