Hummus, a citizen of thel nite'd States, residifi' at Chicago, in the county of Cook and state of Illinois, have invented a' certain new and useful Improvement in draft-Gear Ypkes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact'description reference being had to theac'coinpaliying drawings, forming a part ofthis specification. 7
This invention relates to improvements in draft gear yolzcs.
For several years past, the railroads have been desirous of obtaining a drawbar and yoke connection which will avoid slotting; of the sills and at the same time be readily detaohable. Furthermore the railroads are demandinga yoke connection of the above char cter which is adapted to all types of stan ard draw bars whether the latter halve coupler key slots or not. A further requisite demanded by the railroads is a detaohable draw bar and yoke connection so at"- wange'd that theParts are easily accessiand wherein the draw-bar may be re moved or replaced without disturbing: the gear proper.
Theobject of my invention is to provide a yoke for railway draft r g'gings of ple construction and which will embody a] the advantageous features above indicated.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one ioiimpf-yoke embodying myimprovements. Referring to said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw-bar having the usual butt 11 provided with upper shoulder 12 and lower shoulder 13. The yoke A. which as shown is preferably a steel casting, is provided withupper arm 14, lower arm 15, rear connecting piece 16, and a hollow. boxlike hood or head 17 at its front end, the hood being v open at the front and provided with side walls 18-48, and upper Wall 19, the upper wall 19 being provided on its inner face with an integral, transversely extending gib or shoulder 20, the latter being adapted to Specification o! The parts are assembled by rst placing the draw-bar within the hood. then liftin the amwiii and inserting" the bloclis 22' an 23 thereunder from the front end of the yoke. The width of the blocks 22 and 23 is such that both may be inserted simultaneously when the spreader member 24 is not in place. The blocks 22 and 23 are then pushed rearwardly until the shouldered portions thereof come into alinement with said openings 28-28. Thereupon, the blocks 22 and23 are pushed outwardly or separated which may be done with any suitable tool or by inserting the tapered spreader 24. As the latter is pushed inwardly it is apparent that it will force the looking blocks 22- and 23 to their outermost position and so long as the spreader member 24 remains in place, the blocks 22 and 23 will be held in oper ative position.
It will be understood that the inner faces 36-36 of the horizontal ortions of the locking blocks are bevele to correspond with the taper of the spreader block 24;
. In the construction illustrated in Fig. 6,
all of the parts are the same dxcept that the yoke A is provided with upper and lower shoulders 4040 which are arranged to be engaged by the rear face of the draw-bar butt so that the yoke will be pushed rearwardly in bufiing and thereby adapt the invention to tandem yokes.
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred means of carrying out my invention, the some is merely illustrative and I contemplate all changes and modifications that'come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A yoke' provided with a hooded forward end within which is ada ted'to be received a shouldered draw-bar utt, the side walls of the hooded end being provided with shoulders, said yoke being provided with means arranged to engage the upper shoulder of a draw-bar butt, and devices, cotipen able with the lower shoulder of a draw-bar butt, for detachably lockin the oke to a draw-bar, said devices inolu in s ouldered blocks insertible and removab e from the front end of the yoke while the draw-bar is in place, said blocks being movable laterally after the same have been lnserted within the hood to thereby engage with said shoulders on the side walls of the hooded end, and means for retaining said blocks in operative position.
2. A yoke provided with a hooded forward end within which is adapted to. be received a shouldered draw-bar butt, said yoke being provided with means arranged to engage the upper shoulder of a draw-bar butt, and devices, coiiperable with the lower shoulder ofadraW-bar butt, for detachably locking'the yoke to a draw-bar, said devices includin two 'blocks and a s readerall insertible rom the front end 0 the y ke.
3. A yoke rovided with a hooded forward end wit in which is ada ted to be received a shouldered drawbar utt, the side walls of the hooded end having recesses, said yoke being provided with means arranged to engage the upper shoulder of a drawmar butt, and devices, (:06 erable with the lower shoulder of a drawar butt, for detachably locking the yoke to a draw-bar, said devices including a plurality of shouldered blocks insertible from the front end of the yoke, some of said blocks being shiftable latorally to on age in said recesses.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a shouldered drawbar, of a cast steel yoke, said yoke having a hooded forward end within which is re ceived the butt end of the draw-bar, and means for detachably locking said draw-bar and yoke together, said means including a pair of shouldered blocks insertible from the front end of the yoke, said blocks having laterally extended shoulders, the side walls of the hooded end having recesses into which said laterally extended shoulders are adapted tobe positioned, and a spreader member also insertible from the front end of the yoke between said blocks, and detachable means for holding said spreader in position.
