To all Hwml 'it mag/concern? I* Beit known that I, CALVIN B. PATCH, a
citizen lof `the 'Unite'd States, Vresiding atl (xlenellyinin the county of Dupage' and State o'fwIllinois; have invented'a certainv nenv and useful Improvement in Yokes, of which the following is a full, clear, concise.
, and exact description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part This invention relates to improvements in yokes.
The object of the invention is to provide a yoke having means for detachably connecting the saine with a standard draw-bar, the parts being so arranged that the drawbar and yoke may be readily disconnected Without disturbing the gear.
Another object of the invention is to provide a yoke of the type above indicated more 'particularly adapted for tandem gea-rs.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a part longitudinal section, part side elevation of a yoke and draw-bar showing my improvements in connection therewith. y
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially 0n the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation of the yoke. And Fig. 4 isa perspective view of the locking` block. v
In said drawing, 10 denotes a standard draw-bar having the usual butt 11-11,'the butt being provided with a front upper shoulder 12, lower front shoulder 13, upper rivet holes 14, and lower rivet holes 15. The yoke A comprises an upper arm-16, lower arm 17, rear connectingpiece 18, and an intermediate thimble or post 19. At its forward end, the yoke A is provided with a rectangular, hollow hood or head having upper wall 20, side walls 121-121, and
transversely extending posts or bridges 21 and 22 at the bottoni thereof, said members 21 and 22 being spaced apa-rt longitudinally to thereby form a rectangular opening with the sidewalls of the hood. The upper wall 20 of the hood is provided on its inner face with a pair of inwardly extending bosses 232`3 spaced apart the proper distance to engage the standardly spaced rivet holes 14. Said wall 20 is also provided with a depending, transversely extending gib or shoulder 24 arranged to engage the shoulder 12 of *he draw-bar. draw-bar with the yoke, I providd' a lock-vA ingblock B having an upwardly, extending transverse shoulder 25 at 'its front end, and a pair of bosses 26-26 on itsupper face spaced so as to properly'engage the rivet holes'lv. 'The block B is designed sothfat it may be inserted and removed through the rectangular opening in the bottoin of the hood and iirorder to prevent vtheblock vB from pullingout, the'shoulder'25 is eX- tei'ided lat itsends as iiidi'catedht 274527,. said extended ends engaging iirvertical grooves 28-28 in the side Walls of the hood. ljo maintain the block B" in operative position, 'two supporting members or plates 29 and 30 are provided, said plate 29 comprising a member having a horizontal portion 31 which .fits over said bridging' piece 21 and under the front end of the block B, and a depending flange 32 which engages the rear face of said bridge piece 21 and is preferably secured thereto as by bolts 33. The rear supporting member 30 is in the form of an angle having the horizontal ilange 34 thereof extending into a slot formed between said bridge piece 22 and the iower arm of the yoke. The vertical fiange ofthe member 30 fits against the inner face of the bridge piece 32 and is held in position preferably by bolts 35. 1t will be noted that the member 30 supports the rear edge of the block B.
By the arrangementy above described, it will be seen that the draw-bar and yoke always move in unison in either buff or draft thereby adapting the connection to a vtandem yoke. It will be noted that the block B is not only prevented from longitudinal movement by the extensions 27-27 in the grooves 28, but is also additionally. prevented from rearward movement by theA shoulder 86 with which the rear edge of the block B engages when the block is in position. To disconnect the draw-bar, the bolts 33 and 35 are removed, the supporting plates 29 and 30 are next removed, and the block B then removed downwardly through the rectangular opening in the bottom of the hood.
I claimt l t 1. A yoke for draft riggings having a hood at its forward end within which the butt of a draw-bar is adapted to be received, means for engaging the upper por gaging the lower part of a draw-bar butt, said devices including'a`shouldered block insertible and removable througlran opening in the bottom of the hood, and two supporting plates, one at the front and one at the rear of block, said plates being also insertible and removable through said opening' and adaptedto be secured-to integral v portions of the hood.
2. A yoke for draft riggings having a f hollow. hood at its forward end, the upper wall of said hood having means for engag- 'ing the upper portion of a draw ybar butt, a
removable block at the bottom of the hood,
:ima-eee; i
3. 4A.-, --yoke for draft riggings having a ,hollow hood at its forward end, the upper -'wall of said hood' having means for engaging the upper portion of a draw-bar butt, a
removable block at the bottoni of the hood, v
said block having means for engaging the lower portion of a draw-bar butt, the inner faces of the side walls of the hood being provided with vertically extending grooves and said block having lateral extensions arranged to lit within said grooves to thereby prevent 4forward movement of the block under draftyand means for supporting said block in operative position, comprising two removablev p ates arranged to support the front and rear edges of said block, respectively.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I 40 havel hereunto subscribed my name this 17 vth day of March, 1916.
CALVIN B. PATCH.
