lBe it known that fl, Beltonen M. IROUSE, a citizen of the United States,'residing in Utica, New York, have invented certain llmprovements in Union Suits, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to union suits of the closed crotch class, the object of my inven- .tion being to so construct a garment of this type that while the crotch is edectively closed the garment will be easier to make and more comfortable to Wear than ordinary garments of this type. This object ll attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying draw-v ing, in which- Figure 1 is a rear view of the garment blank as prepared for the application of the crotch closing gussets thereto; Fig. 2 is a front View of the completed garment after the crotch closing gussets have been applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same; Fig. 4 is a view of the blanks from which the crotch closing gussets are formed, and Fig.y 5 is asimilar view of said crotch closing gussets after the same have been folded4 for application to the garment.
ln Figs. l, 2 and 3, l represents the body l of the garment, 2 2 the legs of the same,
tilt
ttl
and 3-3 the sleeves united to the upper portion of the body on each side of the same,
although my invention is not limited to this type of garment but may be applied to' a sleeveless garment as well.
ln the manufacture of the garment a seamless tubular web is employed which, in
its lower portion, is slitted longitudinally.
so es to form the legs 2-2, the cut inner edges of the latter being sewed together at lf-Jl and being shaped or not, as desired.
ln the rear portion of the garment is formed an incision, the opposite sides 6 and 7 of which extend down into the upper portion of the rear of the legs, these sides by preference terminating at the top of the incisionat 8, as shown in Fig. 1. rllhe upper ends 9 and 10 of the front portions of the legs are disconnected from one another and unite at 11 at the crotch portion of the garment, as also shown in Fig. l. rllhe front portion of the body of the garment is slitted and provides overlapping buttoned flapsbut this 1s the usual construction and constitutes lib upturned member 16 on the left hand gusv set. (lne edge 68L of the back member of the right hand gusset is sewed to the right hand edge 6 of the incision in the back of the garment and one edge 9a of the front member of the right hand gusset is sewed to the edge 9 at the upper portion of the front of the right hand leg 2, and in like manner, one edge 7"L of the back member of the left hand gusset is sewed to the left hand edge 7 of the back incision and the edge 10a is sewed to the edge 10 at the upper portion of the front of the left leg -2.
Fach gusset has, at the top, a portion 8Bl for being sewed to the' top 8 of the incision in the rear of the garment and the upturned front member of each gusset has an edge ll.8A for being sewed to the portion 11 of the front portion of. the garment. When the gussets are thus applied they lap one another, as shown in Fig. 2, and each of the gussets has a free edge17 which permits the overlapping flaps of the gussets to `be separated laterally when it is desired to open the crotch portion of the garment, the overlapping back portions of the flaps being, if desired, normally held in lapping relation by buttoning one over the other, as shown at 18 in Fig. 3.
Each of the gussets is formed of two knitted webs united at the line 19 (Fig. 4:) and so disposed that the wales in the lower portion of each gusset will run horizontally while those in the upper portion of each gusset will run vertically, as shown in Figs. l and 5, whereby the upper portion of each gusset will be elastic laterally to provide leeway in the trunk measurement, while the lower portion of each gusset will be elastic vertically so as to better accommodate the strains exerted upon this portion of the gusset, and provide a large opening when the gussets are separated. The free edges 17 of each gusset are preferably nished by overseaming or the like so as to prevent raveling.
A union suit made in accordance with my factured, the gussets being conveniently PES5 made from scraps of fabric not available for other purposes, and the sewing operations necessary to unite the gussets to`the body and legs of the garment being rapidly and economically performed, and, while the crotch portion of the garment is effectually closed during the ordinary wear of the garment, the overlapping crotch closing aps are perfectly comfortable and can be readily separated when the opening of the crotch is desired.
I claim: v
A union suit having incisions between the front and rear portions of the tops of the legs, said rea-r incision running up into the rear portion of the body of the garment, and overlapping right and left hand crotch closing gussets, each comprising an upper web BEECHER M; cRoUsE.
