BENJAIEIN F. ADAMS, OF ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO.
BATH APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 11915.
Application filed October 17, 1914. Serial No. 867,172.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it knownthat I, BENJAMIN F. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved bath apparatus and has for its primary object to provide a portable bath tub which is so constructed that the same may be collapsed and the several parts thereof compactly arranged and conveniently carried in a suit case.
The invention has for a more particular object to provide a bath apparatus of the above character embodying a plurality of foldable frame strips which are so arranged and connected together that they may be folded into small compass and a sheet of water proof material adapted to be removably fitted upon said frame when the same is set up or extended.
My invention has for a further general object to improve and simplify the construction of apparatus of the above character whereby the same is rendered highly convenient and serviceable in practical use and capable of manufacture at small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts tobe hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, 7
Figure 1 is a perspective View showing my improved bath apparatus arranged in position for use; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the collapsible frame; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the frame folded; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of thefolded frame.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates opposed pairs of frame strips, the strips in each pair being hingedly connected, together at one of their ends by.
means of the hinges indicated at 6 which are preferably similar to the hinges employed upon the ordinary folding carpenters rule, though it will be understood that the pres ent invention is not limited to any specific type of hinge. 7 designatesadditional opposed pairs of frame strips which complete the frame structure when the same is extended or set up in condition for use. These strips are also hingedly connected together at one of their ends as at 8, and the other ends of the respective strips are hingedly connected as at 9 to the ends of the corresponding opposed frame strips 5. The hinges 8 and 9 are folded atright angles with respect to the hinges (3 so that the pairs of frame strips 7 will fold inwardly in the plane of the frame in a manner to be later set forth. a
A sheet of rubber or other water proof material 10 is adapted to be used in conjunction with the foldable frame structure. This sheet of material is also of rectangular form and of slightly greater dimensions than the frame. To each corner of the sheet 10, loops or other fastening elements indi cated at 11 are suitably secured. The frame strips 5 and 7 are about one inch wide and a quarter of an inch in thickness, and the water proof sheet 10 is sufficiently large to enable the edge thereof to be engaged upon the upper edge of the frame and extend downwardly over the frame strips and rest upon the floor or other base.
In the use of my improved bath apparatus, the frame is arranged in its extended or set up position as shown in Fig. 2, and the sheet of water proof material arranged upon the same, the fastening loops 11 being engaged over the corners of said frame at the hinges 9. This water proof sheet catches the water from a shower apparatus; and after the use of the device, the water proof sheet may be removed from the frame and the water carried therein and emptied. In this manner, liability of injuring the floor or carpet by spilling the water thereon, is avoided. The frame structure may now be compactly folded together by forcing the opposed pairs of strips inwardly, the hinges 8 being broken. These strips lie against the inner sides of the strip 5'. The latter strips, together with the pairs of strips 7, are now folded upon each other at the hinges 6 so that the edges of four of the frame strips constituting one half of the frame are engaged upon the corresponding edges of the other four strips. In other words, the frame may be considered as including two sections each consisting of a pair of strips 7 and the strips 5 hingedly connected to said strips 7. These strips 5 and 7 of each frame section, fold upon each other so that their side faces are engaged. The corresponding strips 5 of the two sections of the frame are connected together by the horizontal hinges 6 so that the four strips of one section'may be folded over upon the four strips of the other section of the frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The water proof sheet may now be wrapped around the folded frame and the entire device readily carried in a valise or suit case. When in its folded condit'on, the frame should not exceed twenty-t ree inches in length so that it will readily fit within a twenty-four inch suit case.
From the foregoing description, taken in' connection with the accompanying drawings, it is believed that the construction, manner'of use, and several advantages of my invention will be clearly and fully understood. The device is very light in weight what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent i s:-
1 A bath apparatus of the character described including a frame consisting of a plurality of frame strips permanently con-' nected together for folding movement, said str ps being arranged in opposed series, the strips 1n each series being adapted to be folded upon each other in the plane of said strips, and the strips in one series being adapted to be folded in a planeat right angles to the foldingcmovement of the series of strips, upon the strips in the other series, and a sheet of water proof material adapted to be detachably engaged upon the upper edge of the frame when the same is set up.
1 2. A bath apparatus of the character described including a frame consisting of op posed series of strips, each'series defining one half of the frame and the strips thereof being hingedly connected to each other for folding movement inthe plane of the frame, the corresponding strips in one series being hingedly connected to the ends of the same strips in the other series whereby one series of strips may be folded over upon the other series in a plane at right angles to the folding movement of the strips upon each other, whereby the corresponding edges of the two series of strips are engaged, and a sheet of water proof material adapted to be removably attached to the upper edge of the frame when the same is set up. H 3. A bath apparatus of the character described including a frame consisting of two halves each comprising a plurality of hingedly connected strips foldable upon each other into intimate compact relationship, the twohalves of said frame being pivotally connected together for folding movement in a plane at right angles to the lane of folding movement of the individual rame strips to dispose the corresponding strips of the two halves of the frame in superposed relationship with their opposed longitudinal edges in contact, and a sheet of water proof material adapted to be detachably engaged upon the upper edgeof the frame when the same-is extended or set up. In'testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
