5 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in combination cribs and play pens, and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this Ycharacter comprising vnovel means for detachably but firmly securing the parts or members together in'either assembled position.
.Another very important object of the invention is to provide a combination crib and play pen of the character described which, when disassembled and not in usewill occupy a minimum of space in storage.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a combination crib and play pen of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, light in weight, attractive in appearance, and which may be manufactured at low cost.
`All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanytween the rails I0.
spaced, parallel rails III having extending therebetween, at intermediate points, spaced parallel bars II and I2. Panels I3 are mounted on the sides of the rails Iand comprise longitudinal ing drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in end elevation thereof with a corner portion broken away in section.
Figure 2 is a View in vertical longitudinal section through the device assembled as a crib.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary View in vertical section through an upper corner portion of the crib. Figure 4 is an elevational view, looking at the inside of one ofthe ends Vwith portions thereof broken away. v.
Figure 5 is a detail View in side elevation of one of the play pen connections.
Figure 6 is an elevational View of the floor in folded position. Y f Figure 7 is a perspective view of the device assembled as a play pen. 'l Figure 8 is a perspective view ofthe device assembled as a crib. y
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of 'the invention which has been illustrated comprises a bottom I. The bottom I includes a pair of substantially recT tangular folding frames 2 which are hingedly connected at 3. Mounted on one side of the frames 2 are panels 4 of 'plywood or other suitable material. Mounted on the other sides of the framesk 2 isa suitable bed spring 5. Also mounted on these sides of the frames 2 are substantially triangular corner braces 6 which support| the bottom I when the device is `in use as a play pen. The corner portions of the panels 4 have formed therein openings 'I (see Fig. 1), the purpose of which will bey presently' set forth.
Mounted on the bottom I, when the device is being used as a play pen, are duplicate ends and Y sides 8 and 9, respectively. The ends 8 include slots I'I which'accommodate the headed securing screws I8. Countersunk in the inner sides of the rails I0, at points adjacent one end thereof and the bar I2, are keyholeplates I9. The purpose of the members I6 and I9 will be presently set forth. The ends 8 `still further include bars 20' extending between oneend portion of the rails 1.0, which bars carry 'one end of certain of the rods I4.
The sides 9 include upper and lower parallel rails 2| and 22, respectively, having their ends secured to posts 23. The lower end portions of the posts 23 extend below the rails 22 for engage# ment in the openings 'I in the corner portions of the bottom'l when the device is'used as a play pen. Vertical rods 24 extend between the rails 2l and 22. The sides 9 further include triangular corner braces 25. Mounted in the upper and lower portions of the posts 23 are screws 26, the heads of which protrude from said posts for engagement either in the hooks I6 or the keyhole plates I9.
It is thought that the manner of erecting the device for either of its two uses will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, when the device is to be used as a play pen, the bottom' I is unfolded on the hinges v3 and placed in a position with the panels 4 uppermost, said bottom resting on the braces E. The posts 23 ofthe sides 9 are then inserted in the openings 1 in the bottom I where, as illustrated to advantage in Figure 1 of the drawings, they may rest on the braces 6. The ends 8 are then inserted between the end' portions of the sides 9 and the hooks I6 are projected and engaged with the headed elements26. When thus erected,
'the ends B'traverse the hinged connection between the sections comprising the'bottom I. When the device is to be used as a crib, the ends 8 are positioned with the rails I0 vertical and the bars 20 uppermost. The bottom I is then 'folded' on the hinges 3 With the bed spring 5 outermost and said bottom is placed between the ends `8 with its end portions resting on the bars I2, `as seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. When in this position, the 'ends of the foldedbottom I abut the panels I 3. The sides 9 are'then inserted between the ends 8 and the headed elements 26 are engaged in the slots of the keyhole plates I9, thereby rmly but detachably securing the ends and the sides together with the posts 23 abutting the rails I0.
It is believed that the many advantages of a combination crib and play pen constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
