Description

FRANCIS J. CASEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CULTIVATOR-SHOVEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application filed May 26, 1913. Serial No. 769,814.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. Casey, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivator-Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cultivator-shovels, and refers more particularly to improved and novel mechanism for securing the shovel or plow point to the supporting shank or standard, although in its broader aspects, the invention is not limited to the means for fastening these specific elements.
Among the salient objects of the invention are to provide an extremely simple and economically manufactured clamping mechanism which nevertheless securely and rigidly holds the plow or cultivator points to the supporting shank; to provide a construction in which the plow or cultivator point can be quickly and easily adjusted in the shank and then securely locked in the adjusted position; to provide a construction which is devoid of any weak or complicated mechanisms and which consists essentially in a simple sheet metal strap and a threaded U-bolt, and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow point and supporting shank clamped with my improved locking mechanism; Fig. 2 is a. rear end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on lines 25-45 of Fig. l and looking in the direct-ion of the arrows; Fig. at is a perspective view of the metal strap shown as detachable from the plow tooth.
Referring to the drawings '1. designates the cultivator point and the cultivator shank or standard. is shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, this cultivator point is preferably made substantially V-shaped in cross section having curved sides 3 and st terminating in a point The specific manner of forming the faces of the plow point is however, not essential to the present invention. Describing now the manner in which this point is secured to the shank,
the attaching mechanism consists essentially in a fiat metal strap 6 cooperating with a U-shapedbolt T threaded as shown at S to receive nuts 9. The inner ends of the strap member 6 are bent inwardly as shown at 10 and riveted as shown at 11 (or otherwise secured), to the inner faces of the sides 3 and l of the plow point. The central portion of the strap 6 is slotted as shown at 11 in order that the body of the U -shaped locking member 7 can pass through the clamp 6. As is seen more clearly in Fig. 4, the ends 10 of the clamp c are slotted as shown at 12 to permit of the rear end of the U-shaped member 7 abutting directly against the inner faces of the plow point. The central portion of the member (3 is bent outwardly to form a con cave seat 13 to receive the shank 2.. The other clamping member '7 is likewise bent to fit snugly around this shank. \Vhen the shank is inserted between these clamping members and the plow point adjusted to proper position, the parts are securely and rigidly locked together by merely tightening up the nuts 8. N 0 further description of the construction and manner of assembling this clamping mechanism is needed. One of its principal features resides in its simplicity.
It is to be noted that the clamping members are so constructed that any inequalities of wear in the shank or in the clamping members is readily taken care of by merely tightening the nuts. It is also apparent that the device may be readily arranged to suit various types of plow points or kinds of shanks without departing in the least from the spirit of the invention.
In its broader aspects the invention is not limited to the details of construction shown except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a removable V- shaped in cross-section cultivator shovel, provided with an apertured clamp rigidly connected thereto and extending bet-ween the inner sides of the V, a supporting shank in the space between the apertured clamp and the shovel, and a U-bolt insertible through the aperture in said clamp and embracing said shank.
2. A cultivator shovel substantially V- shaped in cross-section, attachable to a vertical supporting shank, and provided with a horizontally extending clamping strap rigidly secured to and conneoting together embrace the supportingshank, and being horizontally slotted to'permit the bodily insertion of the U portion of a U-bolt large enough to embrace said shank and dr awit 'j' tightly in contact with said clamping member.
FRANCIS J. CASEY.
