the invention being to, provide a device of KUZOYOSI-IINA GA, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAT-PIN PROTECTOR.
To all whom it m ay concern: 7 p Be it known that I, Knzo YOSHINAGA,
, asubject of the Emperor of Japan, residing l at San Francisco, in the county of San Fran cisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention'relates to improvements in hat pin protectors, the object of this characterwhich will besimple in 0on l struction, efiective and convenient in operation, and ornamental-- in appearance.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the protector appliedto a hat pin; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof; Fig. 3 isa cross-sectional view on the line 33 of Fig.2.:
hat pin of ordinary construction.
Myimprovedprotector comprises a tubu-. lar body 2, the bore 3 of which receives the a pointed endofthe pin, andwhich is contracted at the outer end,as shownat 4, to engage the extreme end of said pin and arrest the movement of the protector upon the pin. To facilitate the passing, of theprotec-- tor upon the pin, its outer end is threaded and screwed into a threaded central boss 6 of a concavo-convex head.
The inner end of the body of the protector is enlarged transversely as shown at 8, and" formed with three radially extending guide ways 9, in which are received balls 11. The
outer side of said enlarged portion isconical and tapers toward the head of the pin, said guideways opening into said outer tapering surface of said enlarged portion. Surrounding said conical enlarged portion is a vconical closure 12 having a neck 13. 1 1 indicates a spring formed at the center with a hole 15 surrounding said neck 13, and at the. ends with holes 17 surrounding the reduced portion 4 of the end of the body of the protector, and pressed between the boss 6 and the shoulder 18 formed by said reduced portion 4:, the tension of this spring acting to draw a the closuretoward the head of the protector.
Specification 0': Letters Patent. AppIication filed February 3, 1913. Serial No. 745,876.
Referring to the drawingfl indicates a Patented Dec. 1, 1914.
i The mode of use of the protector can be readily understood from the foregoing description. Whenthe pointed end of the pin is inserted in the bore of the protector, the
the direction of the protector head, beingretained in that said position by the conical wall ofthe closure, which in turn is pressed toward said head by said spring. The ten-- sion of said spring, through'the medium of the closure, causes said balls to press against the pin with sufficientforce to prevent acci- The pin can be removed,
"balls engage the surface of-the pin, and are, i by frictional contact therewith pressed in form a stop for the pointed end of'the pin, i
a cap screwed to said end of the tube, the other end of the tube being enlarged and formed entirely therethrough with radially extending open-ended guideways, balls in said guideways, a longitudinally movable member surrounding said tube and formed with a neck, theinner surface of said member being conical, a curved spring one end of which engages said neck and the other is fixed, and said spring extendingconvexly outward between its ends in a position to be manually flattened to move said member longitudinally, said member being so arranged that by said longitudinal movement its inner surface is withdrawn from said balls. 1 r
. In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
