PATENT FFICE.
JULES UHRY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAT-FASTENER.
srncrrrca'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 71 dated January 1903- Application filed March 19. 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULES UHRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to hat-pins or pins of the class adapted for fastening ahat to the hair of a wearer, whereby the hat may not be accidentally displaced.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which may be securely attached to the hat in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally removed and lost and which is susceptible of universal movement for the purposes of operating it.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a hat shown in an inverted position and having my improved hat-pin attached thereto; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the hat-pin, shown partly in sectional elevation; and Fig. 3, a similar view of part of the pin drawn on an exaggerated scale.
In the practice of my invention I provide, primarily, an elongated double-pointed rod or pin A, having near its inner end a flattened part a, which forms shoulders or stops at. Mounted on the pin Ais a spherical slide D, which is smoothly polished to prevent accidental entanglement with the hair of a wearer. This slide has an opening 12 extended diametrically therethrough, which loosely engages around the pin A. The outer end part a of the pin A is tapered to afine point, and upon this tapered end part is cuta fine screwthread a which provides an efficient pinpoint adapted to puncture the wall of a hatcrown without liability of injury thereto and Serial No. 981873. (No model.)
also an efficient means for attaching the removable head 0 by means of its interiorlythreaded part c. This head 0 acts as a handle for operating the pin, and it may be of any suitable design.
In the operation and use of the invention the head 0 is detached from the pin by unscrewing it. The pin is then passed through the crown of the hat from the inside, the point 0. acting to make the necessary puncture. Then the headG is screwed on, whereupon the pin can be readily oscillated through the single opening made in the crown of the hat in any desirable direction, and the necessity of continuously puncturing the crown of the hat for admission of the pin is entirely obviated. The slidable collar B acts as a means for limiting the outward movement of the pin by contacting with the shoulders a. to prevent its accidental removal from the hat, and the inner flattened part a readily passes through the hair without liability of catching.
I may employ two or more of the pins in connection with the hat, if desirable, and the pins may be supplied with a plurality of heads of different design, if desired, for purposes of variable ornamentation.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a fastening attachment for hats, comprising the pin having the shouldered inner end and the sharp-pointed and tapering outer-end having the screw-thread cut thereon, and the spherical slide loosely engaging the pin, and the head threaded to the tapered outer end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of March,
JULES UHRY. Witnesses:
B. PATTERSON, E. BLOHM.
