SASH-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 1914. Serial No. 847,900.-
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \ELOF R. LnoNAnD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of VVoodclifi', Bergen county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Guides, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for holding pivoted sashes at desired angles in their frames, and it consists in the particulars hereinafter pointed out and claimed.

of a window frame, showing two pivoted sashes held at an angle by my improved sash guide; Fig. 2 is a front view of a portion of the frame, sashes and guide; Fig. 3, is an enlarged view, partly in section, of the guide; Fig. 4 is a view of a cross section through the side of the frame, partly broken away and showing the guide from above and its relation to the frame and sashes; and Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on the line X-X of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The same parts are referred to by corresponding r eference numerals in all the figures.
The window frame 1 is preferably formed of sheet metal and is provided with grooves 2, 3, at each side, to receive the sash pivots 4, 5 and also to accommodate the sash chains, not shown. The groove 2 is provided with inturned edges 6, 6, which are shown as formed by the edges of a split tube, 7 which is riveted into the groove in the side of the frame. A bar 8 is pivoted at its lower end, by a pin 9, pressed to duty by a spring 10, in a forked support 11 secured to the top of the lower sash 12.
Through the upper end of the bar 8 passes, loosely, the reduced end 13 of the tubular arm 14 which carries the head 15, provided with the undercut extension 16. And longitudinally through the arm 14 passes the shank 17, threaded at one end to receive the nut 18, and being squared and extended at its other end into the head 19. A grooved, anti-friction roller 20, carrying a ring 21 of rubber or other yielding material, is also mounted on the arm 14, upon which it normally revolves. The heads or extensions, 16, 19, lie within the groove 2, the edges of which enter the grooves between the portions 16, 19 and the head 15. in relation to the groove 2, as the lower sash is raised,lowered or tilted. WVhen, however, the lower sash hasbeen placed at any selected angle it is desirable to secure it in position, so that it ma not be easily dislodged by sudden dra' ts or by accidental causes; Andthis may be accomplished by turning the nut. 18 upon the shank 17 so as to draw it outward through the arm 14,
clamping the head 19 against the inside of the edges of the groove 2, soas to grasp the edges betweenthehead 19 and the head 15, and preventing the sliding of the heads up or down in the frame groove. I This movement of the nut causes it to clamp the upper end of the bar 8 between itself and the antifriction wheel 20, which is held laterally by the shoulder 22 on the shank 17, whereby the bar 8 is prevented from swinging around the arm 14 and is held in whatever position it has been placed. This locking of the sash guide in the frame groove also prevents the raising or lowering of the sash without loosening the nut 18, permitting the window to be partly opened and still locked, or to be locked in its closed position without the use of a special lock.
The upper sash 23 which counterbalances the lower sash 12, in the usual manner, by being connected thereto on each side by a chain (not shown) attached to the pivots 4 and 5, running in the grooves 2 and 3 and over an overhead pulley (not shown), rests, when tilted forward, against the rubber ring on the anti-friction roller 20, against which it can travel, as the sashes are raised and lowered, without marring or defacing the sash.
The use of the spring-pressed pin 9 to connect the bar 8 withthe lower sash permits the bar to be readily disconnected whenever it is desired to turn the sash in ward for cleaning, or to remove it from the window frame. And by combining these detachable and locking features in the sash guide I secure an arrangement whereby the sashes may be simply and effectually locked in desired positions, and, at the same time, the lower sash may be quickly freed from the guide.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. The combination, with a window frame,
provided with an undercut groove therein, of a guide having clamping elements adapted to grip the edges of the groove between them and embodying a head disposed outside of the groove and a relatively retractable por-- tion disposed Within the groove, and adjustable means connecting said guide With a pivoted sash.
2. The combination, with a window frame, provided with an undercut groove therein,- of a guide having clamping elements adapted to grip the edges ofthe groove between them and embodying a head disposedoutsideof the groove with a reduced neck 'and'an en,- larged portion disposed within the groove and a relative retractable portion also .disposed within the groove, and adjustable means connecting said guide With a pivoted sash;
3. The combination, witha window frame, I provided withan undercut groove therein,- of a guide embodying clamping elementsadapted to engage theedges ofsaid groove,
provided with an undercut groove therein, of a guide embodying a head slidably connected with: said groove and carrying a clamping element, an anti-fricion bearing for an upper sash, comprising a roller, carried by the sash guide, a bar pivoted to the sash guide at one .endvandat the other to a lower sash, and means comprising a threaded shank and a nut for simultaneously clamping the guidezin thesash groove and locking the bar at a definite angle.
