GATE-HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 118, 191%.
Application filed. July 15, 1915. Serial No. 40,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, JOHN H. Osoooo, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cedar Falls, Blaokhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate -l-Iinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gate hinges, and the object of my improvement is to provide a hinge-connection between a gate-stile and gate-post, adapted to be removably interlocked with the post when the latter is of a longitudinally split hollow cylindrical or tubular type. This ob ject I 1 have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a gate, of the flexible type, supplied with my improved gate-hinges, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my gate-hinge, as mounted upon a gate-stile and a split tubular post, the stile and post being shown in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the gate-hinge shown in said Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In Fig. 1 is shown a side elevation of a flexible gate having stiles 3 connected pivotally by means of horizontal bars, the latter connected medially pivotally by means of connected clamping bars 10. The stiles are tubular, and the rear stile 3 is adjacent to a tubular gate-post 4, the latter of somewhat greater diameter and split longitudinally. That is, the post is rolled from a plate into tubular form with approximated longitudinal edges.
My improved gate-hinge comprises a pair of like clamps 1 and 2, bent at two separated places to encircle the stile 3 and the post 4. The parts of said clamps between and at opposite sides of said stile and post are flat and lie against each other except those parts which project to the rear of the post, the latter parts being slightly spaced to admit between them a fiat bar 6 having its outer end bent angularly at 7 toengage the rear end of the clamps, to prevent swinging up or down of said bar. Coincident orifices in sald clamps where they contact with each other, and in the clamps and inserted bar 6, permit them to be secured together detachably by means of bolts 8 and nuts 9. The bar 6 extends into the slot 5 of the post 4: to engage the approximated edges and therefore prevents rotation of said clamps upon the post. The stile 3, however, may rock horizontally in its seat between the clamps 1 and 2, to permit the gate to be swung in either direction.
This device may be employed with any description of gate, door or other swinging body where the supporting means is a longitudinally split cylindrical body.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a gate hinge, the combination with a longitudinally divided cylindrical body, of clamping-means embracing said body, a plate secured between said clamping-means and extended into the divided part of said body to engage same and prevent rotation of the clamping-means relative to said body, said clamping-means having a bearing therein, and a body rotatable in said bearing.
2. In a gate hinge, the combination with a cylindrical tubular post split longitudinally on one side to have slightly separated edges, of a gate stile arranged in parallel relation thereto, a pair of clamping-members detachably secured about said tube and stile, and engaging-means connected to said clamping-members and extended into the divided part of said post to prevent relative rotation thereon of the clamping-members, the stile being rotatable relative to the clamping-members.
Signed at Cedar Falls, Iowa, this 29th day of June, 1915.
JOHN H. OSGOOD.
