To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, FRANK Knrori, a subject of the King of Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Extinguisher for Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved safety extinguisher for lamps burning oil, petroleum and like liquids and arranged to automatically extinguish the burner flame in case the lamp is upset, to allow of carrying the lighted lamp about by a person without automatically extinguishing the burner flame, but in case the person carrying the lighted lamp stumbles and loses hold on the lamp then the flame is automatically extinguished.
In order to produce the desired result use is made of a spring-pressed extinguishing member adapted to pass over the burner wick, a movable rod connected with the said extinguishing member to normally hold the latter in open position, and an actuating device for the said rod and normally held in inactive position as long as the lamp rests with its base on a table or other suitable support. Use is also made of a manually controlled locking device adapted to engage and lock the saidactuating device with a view to hold the latter and the extinguishing member in inactive position at the time the lamp is carried around by a person.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the safety extinguisher as applied to a lamp of usual type; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the lamp extinguisher with the extinguishing member in closed position; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the extinguishing member attached to the wick tube; and Fig. 4: is a plan view of the same. 1
The safety extinguisher is shown applied to a petroleum lamp of the usual construction, having a base A, a body 13 containing a fount or reservoir C for the oil and a burner C including a wick D, a wick tube D and a wick raiser D and carrying a chimney support E. member F of approximately U shape is provided at its side arms F with segmental slots F engaged bypivots F secured to the edges of the wick tube D to allow the extinguishing member F to swing from normal open position, as shown in Fig. 1, into closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. .When in this latter position the middle portion F t of the extinguishing member F is on top of the wick tube D and its wick so as to extinguish the flame emanating from the said wick. Springs G are connected with the side arms F of the extinguishing member F to pull the latter downward into closed position after the extinguishing member has swung from open position into closed position. The lower ends of the springs G are attached to the edges of the wick tube D, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, and one side of the middle portion F of the extinguishing member F is provided with a slotted extension F engaged by a loop H of an arm H secured to the upper end I of a vertically disposed rod I extending into a tube J arranged within the body B and the fount C of the lamp. The upper end I of the rod T preferably screws on the latter to allow accurate adjustment of the rod 1 relative to the member F. The lower end of the rod I is provided with a rack l in mesh with one side of a pinion K journaled in the tube J. The other side of the pinion K is inmesh with a rack L ar ranged on the upper end of a second rod L disposed vertically and mounted to slide in the tube J. The lower end of the rod L is adapted to project beyond the under surface of the base A of the lamp and the said rod L is pressed on by a spring N to move the rod L downward whenever the lamp is tilted or lifted off the table or other support on which the lamp is resting. at the time.
It will be noticed that when the lamp is resting on a suitable support the weight of the lamp overcomes the spring N so that the rod L is held in uppermost position and the rod I is held in lowermost position whereby the extinguishing member F is held in open position relative to the wick tube D. Now when the lamp is tilted or lifted off the table then the spring N imparts a downward movement to the rod L whereby the pinion K is turned and the rod I is moved upward thus swinging the extinguishing member F upward into closed position relative to the wick tube D to extinguish the wick flame. From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the extinguishing member F is normally in open position as long as the lamp rests on the table or other suitable support, the said extinguishing member F not interfering in the slightest with the ignition of the wick whenever it is desired to do so. tilted or upset for any reason whatever then the rod L is released and moves downward by the action of the spring N to cause the extinguishing member F to swing upward into closed position with a view to extinguish the wick flame, as above described.
A In order to allow of safely carrying the llghted lamp about from one place to another, use is made of a manually controlled locking device for locking the rod L in its normal uppermost position, as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose mentioned the lower end of the rod L is provided with a notch L adapted to be engaged by a spring-pressed locking bolt 0 mounted to slide horizontally in the base A of the lamp, the bolt 0 being provided at its outer end with a fingerpiece 0' adapted to be pressed by the person when taking hold of the lamp in order to lift the same off the table or other support and carry it to a distant place. Normally the bolt 0 is in retracted position relative to the notch L by the use of a spring P pressing the bolt 0 in an outward direction and hence the bolt 0 does not interfere with the rod L and allow the latter to move downward by the action of its spring l in case the lamp is tilted or upset on the table on which it is resting at the time. When a person desires to'carry the lighted lamp about it is necessary to press the fingerpiece O inward to engage the bolt O with the registering notch L prior to lifting the lamp from the table or support. Now in case the person carrying the lighted lamp should stumble and release the fingerpieceO then the spring P immediately retracts the bolt 0 thus unlocking the rod L. When this takes place the spring N "moves the rod L downward and the extinguishing member F is swung from its normal position into closed position to extinguish "thewick flame thus preventing ex- .plosion of the oil and setting fire to the surroundings.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a lamp of the type described, a U-shaped spring-pressed extinguishing member pivoted on the wick tube of the lamp and adapted to swing over the top of the wick tube, a rod connected with the middle portion of said extinguishing member andprovided with a rack at its lower end, a spring-pressed operatingrod adapted to extend below the bottom of the base of the lamp and provided with a rack at its upper end, anda pinion mounted to turn and in mesh on opposite sides with the said racks.
2. In combination with a lamp of the type described, a U-shaped spring-pressed extin guishing member pivoted on the wick tube of the lamp and adapted to swing over the top of the wick tube, a rod connected with the said extinguishing member and provided with a rack at its lower end, a spring-pressed operating rod adapted to extend belowthe bottom of the base of the lamp and provided with a rack at upper end and with a notch at its lower end, a pinion mounted to turn and in mesh on opposite sides with the said racks, and a manually controlled spring pressed locking rod adapted to engage the notch of the said operatingrod to lock the latter in inactive position.
3. The combination with a lamp, of a U- shaped extinguishing member having segmental slots in its arms, pivots on the wick tube and engaging the slots of the arms of the said member, springs secured to the wick tube and to the arms of the extinguishing member, rod having its upper end connected with the middle portion of the said member and provided with a rack at its lower end, a sliding and spring pressed operating rod adapted to extend below the bottom of the base of the lamp and provided with a rack at its upper end, a pinion between the rods and in mesh with the racks thereof, and a manually controlled locking device for the operating rod.
