Among bathers, particularly at the seaside resorts, the need has often been felt for some means for keeping about the person 4a few articlesvsuch as small change, 'smoking materials, matches, etc., which, of

course, have to be kept dry. On the other hand the bathing suits such as are now in vogue, are not adapted for holding an ordinary receptacle.

The object of the present invention is to fill the want as above set forth in a practical satisfactory manner and so as not to encumber the bather or to mar the appearance of his garments.

To this end Iv provide a small, neat Water proof receptacle. which may be attached to the belt of the bathing. suit, so as to appea-r'as one o-f the`parts of the bathing outit'itself rather than an encumbrance. Preferablythis water proof receptacle may be used also as the buckle of the belt and as Y.such will have substantially the same appearance as the usual buckle now in use, the

y two diifering merely in depth. If desired,

however, thereceptacle may be attached to another portion of the belt, as at the back or the side thereof without sacriiicing in any considerable degree the 'neatness in appearance of the wearer.

In the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of this invention, Figure l is a rear elevation of the improved receptacle in the form of a buckle. Fig. 2 is a plan view partlyV in section, Fig. 3 is a front elevation also partly. section, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the form corresponding to Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an elevation partly in section of a modified form of receptacle. Fig. 6 is a section of the cover on an enlarged scale illustrating a modified construction for retaining the packing.

Referring in detail to Figs. 1 to 4 of the ,v

attachment bar 11 to which is attached the l strap 12 of the belt and the pivoted toothed member 13 which serves to hold the other end of the strap in adjusted position. Located 'preferably at one of the lateral ends 14 of the receptacle isl the mouth 15 formed with lan upstanding ridge 16 thereabout. To close the mouth of the receptacle to make the same water tight, a cover 17 is provided having extending therefrom a tail portion 18 formed with a pivot 19 adapted to engage within the socket or hinge member 20. The latter is preferably in the form of a spring attached. to the end 14 of the receptacle and is provided with an overturned portion 21 forming the'socket proper. When the cover is closed the tendency of the .pivot 19 will be to raise the socket portion 21 and the lat ter will thus exert a spring tension thereon tending to keep the cover tightly against the ridge 16 for'med about the mouth of the receptacle. At the end of the cover opposite [from the pivot 19 is preferably disposed an inclined face 22 which is engaged byl a spring 234 -to hold that end of the cover also snugly against the mouth of the receptacle.

This spring 1s preferably formedgwith an attachment portion 24 secured in" suitable manner to the bottom end of the receptacle and with beveled portions'25 and. 2t, which respectively cause the spring to bend back when the cover is snapped into place and then hold the same snugly in position against the ridge 16. Suitable packing 27, such as rubber or some fibrous material may be disposed in the interior of the cover to engage the outer edge of the ridge 16, so as to insure a water tight fit. The box may be opened by pulling on the handle 28 formed on the cover adjacent to the free end thereof.

In the modified form of receptacle illustrated in Fig. 5, the body portion 30 has two springsl at the top and bottom ends thereof formed with inclined faces 32 and 33 to engage the inclinedvprojecting portions 34 formed upon a separable cover 85. The lat ter slips over the end of the receptacle and.

telescopes therewith, the two springs mam--V taining it snugly against the mouth of the receptacle'. Suitable means, such as a thumb projection 36, may beformed on the sides of the cover for grasping the same to open the boX. The end of the receptacle opposite to the cover is preferably formed with a projecting ridge 87, so as to make-that'end of the box symmetrical with the other end over which the cover is inserted. y

ln the section of a form of cover illus- -trated in Fig. 6, `the edges of the cover 40 are formed with overturned portions 41 which engage the edges 42 of the packing 43.' `The latter may thus be securely held in place.

It will be apparent' that the" improved receptacle may4 be readily stamped of sheet metalv and also maybe formed with ornai mental designs to enhance the beautyl of' the article and at thefsame time keep the'cost Having thus described' my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent:

2. As an article of'manufacture', a belt buckle containing 'a water proof' chamber formingaxwater proofy receptacle, the recep'taclefcomprising a body portion formed.y with a mouth, a cover formed with anvinl clined. edge, packing within the cover and yielding means formed with anyinclinedK portion engaging said inclined edge of the cover for" holding the cover to compress' th'e'packing against the mouth.

3. As an 'article of manufacture, a water proof receptacle adapted to be attached to abelt of a person, the-receptacle comprising a body portion curved( in the direction of the length thereof and formed with a mouth at a lateral end thereof, a cover formed with an inclined'edge, a spring formed with one inclined portion to engage. said inclined edge of the-cover to hold the same'snugly` against the mouth and` with another inclined portion at theend thereof by means of which the spring is bent by the cover to permit thelatter tov snap into place, the material within the receptacle being removable r by inclining the `receptacle' when opened.

4. As an article of manufacture, a water proof receptacleadapted to be attached to a beltof a person, the receptacle comprising a body portion formed with a mouth, a cover Ahaving aipivot -at a lateral end tl1ereof"and"`an' inclined edge at the other end,a-sp'ringhingeportion attached to the body andengaging the pivot -on the cover and'another spring'having aninclined portion .engaging the inclined edge of theI cover to hold the same snugly against the mouth,`the material within the receptacle being removable by inclini'n'g the receptacle when opened.

5. As an article of manufacture, a belt vbuckle having means for attaching the belt thereto, said bucklehaving a lhollow'body portion formed' witha curve in the direction of its length and provided with a mouth, a cover'- pivoted to the body, packing between the body'of the cover and the mouth and readily operable means for locking the cover tothe body to compress the vpacking in snug water tight fit against the mouth.
