MUSIC-BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed June 26, 1912, Serial No. 705,821. Renewed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,806.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAY COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing. at VVilkes- Barre, county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to music racks and particularly to music racks adapted to be secured to a piano case.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved music rack, particularly adapted to hold sheet music, adapted to be attached to a piano case and which may be folded back flat against the same or extended when it is desired to remove a piece of music therefrom.
A further object of my invention is to provide a rack of the character stated which when in extended position shall support the music in position to be readily accessible to the performer.
A further object of my invention is to provide a rack of the character stated which when folded back against the case shall not mar the same.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device as mentioned which shall be ornamental and add to the appearance of the instrument.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists generally in a folding bracket adapted to be secured to a piano case to fold against the side thereof and equipped with a swinging music holder which is adapted to lie in a vertical position when the de vice is folded and to be swung tohorizontal position when the device is extended to facilitate access thereto by the performer.
My invention further consists in a particular construction and arrangement of the bracket whereby when the same is folded none of the hingedly or swinging parts of the bracket shall come in contact with the piano case to mar or scratch the same.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pian case equipped with a music rack embodying my invention in its preferred form, the device being illustrated in extended position, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device in folded position, Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line x-az of Fig. 2, and Fig. i is a plan view of the device in folded position.
Referring now to the drawings A inclicates the piano case, B the folding bracket and C the swinging music holder. The bracket B comprises a fixed arm 1 and a pair of hinged arms 2 and 3. The fixed arm 1 is adapted to lie close against the side of the piano case A and is provided with av laterally ofi -set foot or extension 4 having perforations 5 to receive screws 6 for securing the device in position. The foot 4 is arranged against the back of the piano case so that the screws 6 shall not mar the outer surface thereof.
The arm 2 is hingedly connected as at 7 to the forward end of the arm 1 and is preferably adapted to fold back against the arm 1 as illustrated in Fig. 3. The arm 3 is hingedly connected at one end as at 8 to the free end of the arm 2, and is preferably arranged to swing in a plane above the same.
The arm 3 is provided with a pair of spaced vertically extending lugs 9 which are perforated to receive a rod 10, which rod is of considerably greater length than the dis tance between the lugs so as to project an appreciable distance beyond one of them for a purpose which will appear hereinafter. The rod 10 is provided with nuts or heads 11 and 12, the latter of which abuts the adjacent lug 9.
The music holder C comprises a board 13, the dimensions of which are slightly greater than those of a sheet of music, and straps or bands 14 secured thereto forming a pocket 15 for the music. The bands 14: may be either of metal or elastic as preferred, the essential feature being a pocket for the music open at one end. Secured to the back of the board 13 is a plate 16 provided with a pair of lugs 17 which are spaced apart the same distance as are the lugs 9 on the arm 3, The lugs 17 are perforated to receive the rod 10 upon which they are mounted to swingingly support the music holder G. The lugs 17 are arranged on the rod 10 forwardly of the lugs 9, that is, toward the free end of the arm 3 from the respective lugs 9, and the lugs 9 and 17 are equipped with co-acting or interlocking members 18 and 18 which are adapted when in engagement to hold the'music holder 0 rigidly in either horizontal or vertical posi tion. 19 indicates a spring interposed be tween the head 11 and the adjacent lug 17 for normally holding the co-acting members 18 and 18 in engagement.
When the device is in folded position the holder C is arranged vertically as illustrated in Fig. 2. In this position the arm 2 lies against the outer face of the arm 1 and the arm 3 lies directly above the arm 2, and to prevent the arm 3 from swinging inwardly to contact the piano and mar the same a lug or stop 20 is provided on the plate 16, which stop abuts either of the arms 1 or 2, preferably the hinged portion 7 thereof. l Vhen the performer desires to remove or insert a piece of music the bracket is extended into the position shown in Fig. 1 and by drawing forwardly on the holder 1 C against the tension of the spring 19, the
secured to the back of the piano case, a second arm hingedly connected to the fixed arm and adapted to fold against the outer face thereof and a third arm hingedly connected to the second arm and adapted to swing in a plane above the first and second mentioned arms, a music holder swingingly mounted on said third arm, means for locking said holder in vertical position and a stop on said music holder adapted to limit the in ward swing of said third arm when said holder is locked in vertical position substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAY COOPER.
