Be it known that I, PAUL R. HARSI-I, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Keyhole-Illuminating Apparatus, of which the following is a switch when the door is is'open position,
thereby preventing waste of current in the repeated operation of the switch.
It is also my purpose to provide apparatus of the class described which will embrace the desired features .of sim licity, ciliciency and durability, which may be installed and maintained at small cost which will operate efliciently and effectively for its intended purpose and wherein the component parts will be so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
A further object of my invention is the profision of a keyhole illuminating apparatus which may be used in connection with the door bell and burglar alarm apparatus so that the door bell may be operated independently of the illuminating apparatus, when the burglar alarm will be put in operation in the event of a person endeavoring to effect an unlawful entrance into th house.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a door jamb and 2 the door hinged at one edge to one stile of the jamb and capable of swinging movement to open and closed positions. The inner surface of the remaining side stile of the door jamb, at a point adjacent to the center thereof, is formed with arecess and secured to the inner surface of such side stile at the recess the door may be locked in closed position. Secured to the opposite sides of the door and formed with keyholes alining with each other and with .the keyhole in the casing of the lock 6 are escutcheon plates 7 while formed in the escutcheon plates above the keyholes therein are circular openings alining with each other and. with the opening in the barrel controlling the latching bolt The side edge of and passed through these alining openings I is a shank 8 having the opposite ends thereof equipped with knobs 9 respectively whereby the barrel may be rotated to retract the latching bolt.
Formed in the side stile of the door jamh adjacent to the plate 3 and disposed in proximity to the keyhole of the lock is a recess 10 and disposed within the recess 10 is an electric lamp receptacle 11 secured within the recess by means of a plate 12'fastened to the side stile of the jamb and formed with an opening concentrically of the receptacle. Passed through this openingand threaded into the recepta le is the body of an electrlc lamp bulb 13, while secured to the wall of 1 the opening in the plate 11 and partially surrounding the bulb 13 is a reflector 14 acting to throw the light rays from the bulb toward the keyhole. Secured to the inner surface of the door jamb adjacent to the upper end thereof is a contact 15 and adapted to engage the contact 15 is a contact finger 16 carried by the adjacent edge ofthe door 2 and designed to engage the contact 15 when the door is in closed position. Leading from the contact finger 16 is a conductor 17 terminallv connected with a binding screw 18 carried by the escutcheon plate upon the outer side of the door, while seated within a recess formed'in the outer end of the knob on the outer side of the door is a push button switch 19. One terminal of the push button switch 19 is grounded upon the adjacent escutcheon plate by means of a wire 20, while the remaining terminal of the switch 19 is connected with the adjacent door knob as at 21. In accordance with my present invention; the outer door knob and the shank 8 are insulated from the outer escutcheon plate by means of insulating bushings 22. Secured to the rear face of the plate 3 and extending into the recess in the door jamb behind the opening 4 is a contact plate 23' adapted to be engaged by the latching bolt of the lock 6 when the door is in closed position. Leading from the contact plate 23 is a conductor 24 terminally connected to one side of the receptacle 11 and from the remaining side of the receptacle 11 leads a conductor 25, while from the contact 15 leads a conductor 2-6. By means of this construction, it will be seen that when the conductors'25 and 26 are connected with a battery or other source of electrical energy.
and the door in closed position, the circuit thus formed will be opened at the push button switch and may be closed when the push buttom switch is depressed, thereby energizing the filament of the lamp bulb 13 so that the rays of light will be projected toward the keyhole to illuminate the latter to facilitate the insertion of the key therein. When the push button switch is closed, current flows through'the established circuit as follows; from one side of the battery, through the conductor 26, the contact 15, contact finger 16, conductor 17 the escutcheon plate, the'ground wire 20, through the push button switch 19, the door knob, the shank 8 carrying the knob, the latching bolt, the contact plate 23 engaged by such bolt, the conductor 24, the lamp, and back to the battery by way of the conductor 25. .32 designates a battery having the opfiosite sides thereof connected with the terminals of the conductors 25 and 26 respectively.
34 designates a relay controlling a local burglar alarm circuit 38 and leading from one terminal of the winding of the relay 34 is a conductor 33 including a suitable controlling switch 28 and terminally connected to the conductor 26, while leading from the remaining terminal of the winding of the relay 34 is a conductor 35 terminally connected with one contact of a pair 36 located in the keyhole of the lock and spaced apart therein. The remaining contact of the pair I the conductor 33, and'the closed switch 28 therein, the relay 34, the conductor-35, the bridged contacts 36, and the conductor 37, back to the battery.
39 designates an electric bell and one side of the bell 39 is connected with the conductor 33 between the switch 28 and the battery 32 by way of a conductor 40, while the remaining side of thebell 39 is connected with one side of a push button switch 41 located upon the outer side of the door j amb and the remaining terminal of the push button switch 41 is connected with the other side of the battery by way of a conductor 42.
In the modified form of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4, I have shown a form of push button detachably connected with the outer knob. In the present instance, the push button comprises a collar 43 of insulating material surrounding the hub of the knobv and secured thereto by means of a set screw 44, and a curved leaf spring 45 disposed upon the periphery of the collar 43 and having one end secured to the collar and the remaining end portion disposed over a radial opening 46 formed in the collar and secured to this end of the leaf spring is a stem 47 having the inner end extending -"through the opening 46- and adapted to be forced into engagement with the knob shank or spindle. The spring strip 45 is grounded 'upon the adjacent escutcheon plate so that when the stem 47 is depressed to engage the knob shank or spindle the circuit of the lamp will be closed, thereby energizing the lamp.
While I have herein shown and described certain preferred forms of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be under- 'lamp disposed in proximity to the keyhole,
an electric circuit including said lamp, a push button switch in said circuit carried by the door knob on the outer side of the door whereby the circuit may be closed to energize said lamp, door operated means closing said circuit at a point remote from said push button switch and adapted to open the circuit in the movement of the door to open position, said circuit including the latching bolt of the door, and a plate carried by the door jamb in the path of movement of the latching plate, whereby the circuit will be completed when the door is closed and 15 latched.
2. In apparatus of the class described, a
lamp disposed in proximity to the keyhole of the door, an electric circuit including said lamp, a switch in said circuit adjacent to the keyhole whereby the circuit may be closed to energize said lamp, an alarm circuit controlling relay keyhole contacts con-- nected in circuit with said relay and adapted to be bridged by the key to energize the relay, and a bell, and a push button switch connected in series with each other.
