To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN RoCERs, citizen,
of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to faucets, and it has for its object the construction of a faucet adapted to give a temporary flow of water and close by the pressure of water and without the aid of springs and by simply turning the operating lever to effect a continuous flow of water.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the faucet closed; Fig. 2 is a broken view partly in section showing the operating lever depressed and the valve open for a temporary flow of water; Fig. 3 is an upper plan view of the faucet showing the lever in its normal position; Fig. 4: is a detail plan view of the lever carrying yoke; Fig. 5 is an upper plan view showing the operating lever thrown to one side of the center to effect a continuous flow of water; Fig. 6 is a broken upper plan view of the faucet with the operating parts removed; and Fig. 7 is a rear end elevation partly in section of the faucet with the working parts removed showing modified means for retaining the operating lever in either of its angular positions.
The faucet 1 has the neck portion 2 integral therewith on which is mounted the lever carrying yoke or support 3 adapted to rotate on said neck. The lever 4: is pivotally supported and adapted to have a vertical movement on the pin 5 carried by the support, said support being held in workable relation with the faucet by means of the Washer 6. The valve stem 7 lies at all times directly under the lever, and it carries at its lower end the valve 8 adapted to register with the seat 9 when closed.
10 is a finger integral with the lever and is located below the pivotal point of thelever and is adapted to engage with the body portion of the faucet and lock the lever when depressed and in an angular position, presently to be more fully described.
When a temporary discharge of water is required, the lever 4Lbeing in its normal central position, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is simply depressed, Fig. 2,by hand to open the valve. Releasing the lever the valve will instantly close by the pressure of the incoming water acting against the underside of the valve. To effect a continuous discharge the leveris depressed as shown in Fig. 2 to open the valve and is then swung aroundsee Fig. 5-until its foot 10 comes in binding or other engagement with portions of the body of the faucet at the oint a or 6, Figs. 1 and 6. This engagement of the foot of the lever with the body of the valve will prevent the lever being raised either manually or by the force of the water, it being understood that the lever can be thus turned in an angular position to the right or left of the center. Turning the lever to its normal central position, the valve will be instantly closed by the pressure of the water as before mentioned. The body of the faucet is cut away at c, Fig.
6, so that when the lever is centrally located,
the foot 10 will clear such cut away portion, Figs. 1 and 2, and thus permit of a free vertical movement to the lever.
Various means may beused to hold the lever ineither of its angular positions. In Fig. 7 is shown the lugs 11, 12, under which the foot of the lever may be temporarily swung.
Having thus described my inventlon, what I claim is 1. A faucet comprising a body provided with an upper neck, a. pressure-closed controlling valve within the body and having a stem projecting through and beyond the neck, a yoke pivotally embracing the neck, an operating lever pivotally connected to the yoke and extending directly over the pro jecting portion of the stem, and locking medzltns carried by the lever for engaging the b0 y.
