THOMAS MIDGLEY, or won'rmne'ron, OHIO, assxenon To MORGAN & WRIGHT, or
' mrraorr, mcmean, A conrom'rron or MICHIGAN.
\ CONTINUOUS CALIPER FOR RUBBER-TREATED FABRIC.
Worthington, county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Continuous Calipers for Rubber-Treated Fabrics, of which the following is a full, clear, and. exact de-- scriptio g This invention relates to the manufacture of rubber treated fabrics, and has for an object to provide apparatus for indicating variations in the thickness of a web of rubber treated fabric traveling from the rubber treating calender rolls to the take-up stock roll.
In treating fabric with rubber it is customary to pass the fabric 1n the form of a ribbon or web between calender rolls one of which is supplied with a film of rubber from a suitable source and applies this film to the web during its passage between the rolls. The web so treated is then spooled upon a stock roll with a backing of fabric separating and keeping the con-volutions from adhering together.
My invention provides an apparatus for slightly tensioning this web between calender rolls and stock roll and indicating the thickness of the tensioned web.
111' the drawings one embodiment of my inventionis shown, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the gage mechanism; Fig. 3 is a sectional new on the line 33, Fig. 2. .Referring to the drawmgs, 10 and 11 designate calender rolls of the usual and well known type employed in treatlng a fabric web 12 with rubber. The web passes from the calender rolls over a guide roll 13 carried on a suitable frame 14 and 1s then spooled upon a stock roll 15 carried by the a frame and preferably power driven as indicated at 16. A backing 17 of fabric is pplied to the rubber treated web from a supply roll 18 carried by the frame andseparates the convolutions of the rubber treated fabric on the stock roll.
In carrying out my inventlon a pair of brackets 19 is bolted to the frame 14 and is connected at the free ends by a tie rod 20 which extends transversely below the path of the web 12. A pair of supporting plates 21 is secured to the outer ends of the tie rod Specification of'Letters Patent.

by split ring clamps 22. Each plate equipped with a pair of parallel roller bear:
Positioned at each end of the tensio roller 24 is a carriage 27 which is mounted between guides 28 on the related supporting plate to slide toward and away from the path of the web. An arcuate bracket arm 29 is swiveled onthe'carriage by a pin 30 and carries a sleeve 31 which supports the margin of the web and which snugly re ceives thecorresponding reduced end 26. of
the roller, the surface of the sleeve. and
each end which snugly receives the correroller being flush .with each other and presenting a continuous supporting surface for the web. The sleeve is revolubly secured to the arm by a pin 32 and both the sleeve and the roller are rotated as a unit by friction of the web passing thereover whereby the free and unobstructed travel of the web is assured. An ordinary indicator '33 is fixed to the tip of the arm, the indicator stem 34 carrying a roller 35 which rides on the Web as it passes over the supporting roller 24 and transmits the variations in the thickness thereof to the indicatorin the usual manner.
In operation by virtue of the web being tensioned by the 'roller 24 all creases,
wrinkles, and other irregularities in the web are removed so that the reading of the indicator accurately indicates the true thickness of the web. Both indicators operate simultaneously through the instrumentality of the roller 35 upon opposite longitudinal edges of the web and indicate the respective thicknesses of said edges whereby any variation may be observed and the rubber treating mechanism then regulated to correct the same. Both carriages whereupon the bracket arms 29 may be 27 may be withdrawn 'from the web until the sleeves 31 disengage 'from the roller 24 swung out of the way when desired. When' again-swung back into position, the sleeves engage with the corresponding ends of the roller and anchor the indicators in operative position with respect to the web. I I
It will be noted .from the above descriptionthat the sleeve ''31, or member which supports the margin of the webfis movable as a unit with the indicator,'.toward and away .from the path of the web oven the member. The object of this construction is that the'member 31 will, by movement as a unit with the. indicator, be always maintained in fixed position relatively 'to the indicator so that accurate readings will be possible even while the unit is being moved bodily upon the rubber "treated web to various positions.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim and desire to by Letters Patent is l; A caliper'lincluding a roller for supporting a traveling" web, a support, an armslidably mounted thereon movable toward and away from the path of the web over the have protected roller, a sleeve carried bythe arm for reand indicating the thickness of'the web. 7
ceiving one endof the roller and anchoring said arm, and an indicator carried by the arm co-acting with said sleeve for engaging sleeve-carried by said arm for receiving said.
' reduced end of .the'roll'er, and an indicator carried by said arm for coracting' with said sleevein engaging and indicating the thicknessofthe web. v 3.,A caliper embodying a support,'a roller thereon for supporting, a traveling web and having peripheral grooves roller bearings on the support-fitting in" corresponding pe ripheral grooves in the roller and; preventingfl'endwise movement of the roller upon the support, an arm slidably mountedv on the support at one end' ofthe roller and movable toward and away from the pathofthe web over the roller,,a sleeve carried by the arm for engagingwhe endjof the roller and anchoring the arm, and an indicator carried by the arm and coacting with the sleeve for engaging and indicating the thickness of the web. 1
