This machine comprises, generally, abrading means, and means for simultaneously rotating and feeding the wire to the abrading means. Usually one of said means is so supported that itcan be adjusted toward and from the other of the means for determining the gage of the wire and also for taking up for the wear of the abrading means.
In the illustrated embodiment of my invention the abrading means comprises a ro tating member as a grinding wheel, and the rotating and feeding means comprises a rotating element arranged with its periphery in position to engage and rotate and feed the wire, said element being arranged with its axis extending in the direction of the feeding movement and with its periphery engaging the wire so that points on the portion of the periphery of said element in engagement with the wire advance to some extent, during the turning of said element: in the direction of feeding ofthe wire, in other words, in a direction spirally relatively to an axis p arallel to the axis of the wire and owing to the frictional engagement of such element with the wire, the wire is caused to advance as well as rotate. Fret'erably the rotating element is arranged with its axis inclined at a small angle crosswise of the axis of the wire.
In this embodiment of my invention the abrading member is fixed from movement, as a unit, toward and from the wire, while the rotatin and feeding means is movable as a unit toward and from the working face of the abrading member.

The carriage '7 also comprises a plurality of upright supports or bearing frames 11 located on opposite sides of the abrading member, for supporting the rotating elements as hereinafter described.
In this embodiment otniy invention, 1 preferably use rotating and feeding meanslocated on opposite sides of the abrading member, the means on each side usuallyeomprising a pair of'rotating elements prefer ably in the form of cylinders or rollers 12, 13 arranged on opposite sides of the path of the wire 14 and arranged with their axes extending in the direction of the wire, such axes being arranged in parallel planes, as vertical planes, in this embodiment of my intention, and as being inclined in opposite directions out of a plane, as a horizontal plane, containing the axis of the wire 1% and meeting the first-mentioned plane at a right angle, the rollers being preferably opposed to each other so that the intermediate portions of their axes'intersect said horizontal plane. The inclined arrangement of the rollers is clearly seen in Fig. 4.

and each block is held in its adjusted position by a set screw 11. Thgr adjustment of the bearing blocks are in the same direction as that of the carriage 7, and is determined by screws 18 associated respectively with the blocks. carried by each frame 11.
The sliding movement 01 the carriage 7 is effected by a screw 19 located substantially centrally of the frame or bed 1 and having a micrometer .20 associated therewith.
The carriage 7 is held in its adjusted potion by suitable clamping means consisting of a screw 21 depending therefrom through the bed or frame 1 and having a clamping nut turning on its lower and against a suitable plate or washer '23 hearing against the lower face of the bed or frame 1.
The elements or cylinders 12 and are actuated in any suitable manner, and, ashore shown, a main driving shaft 2 1 is journaled in suitable bearings in the carriage 7 and is provided with gears 25 at opposite ends of the carriage 7, each of the gears 25 meshing with one of a pair of idlers 26 which mesh respectively with pinions 28 mounted. on the correspomling ends of the axles 15 of each pair of gears 19, 13. The shaft 24 is also provided with suitable means by which power can be applied thereto, s the pulley 29, which may be connected or disconnected to the shaft 21 by clutch mechanism operated by a handle 30 My machine is also provided with suitable means for engaging the wire at points separated from one another approximately ninety degrees for holding the wire to the abrading member, and for holding the wire between the rollers 1'2, 13.
The means for holding the wire to the working face of the abrading member, is adjustable to hold di'll'erent sizes of wire, and comprises parts having faces arranged at an angle to each other, and in the angle of which the wire is held, as seen in Fig. 5, one part being adjustable relatively to the other to conform to the size of the wire being operated on. in this embodiment of my invention, said means is adjustable vertically as a whole.

The plate 31 provides the horiby the plate 31 in a suitable bearingBQ rising from the plate 31 in a slot 10, Figs. 1 and 5, in the plate 32, and threading n a passage in the plate 32, A suitable micrometer 41, Figs. 5 andll, is associated with the carriage for exactly determining the amount of adjustment of the plate 32, this adjustment being determined by the size of the wire to be operated on or to be produced.
The plate 32 is held in its adjusted position by suitable clamping means consisting of a screw 12 rising from the plate 31 through the slot 10, and a clamping nut 43 turning on tl1e screw against a suitable washer or hearing" plate 44 bearing against the upper face of the plate 32.
The means for holding the wire between the rollers comprises suitable members 45-, blocks spaced. apart at intervals and hear ing downwardly on the wire on opposite sides of the abrading means, said membe'rs also holding the wire on the central wire support. Said members are formed with grooves 46 of such curvature as to receive various sizes of Wire. The members 45 are supported by screws 47 carried vertically by the frames 11 of the carriage 7. The wire is therefore held at two sides by the plates 31, 32 at a third side by the Working face of the abrading members and at a fourth, side by the blocks 45.
In order to accurately position the members 45 during various adjustments of the carriage 7, the screws 17 turn through blocks 48 slidably mounted in ways 50 in the upper cross bars of the frames 11, Fig. 8. The positioning of the blocksis effected by means of projections as screws 51 extending laterally from such blocks through slots 52 in the upper bars of the frames 11. These blocks are held in their adjusted positions by nut-s turning on the screws against the upper face of the frame bars 11.
The wire is guided between the rollers 12,
. 13 in a direction lengthwise of the rollers by suitable guiding means, here shown as a tube 53 movable with the carriage 7 and supported in thestandard 51 rising from the carriage 7 at the outer side of the pulley 29, the tube extending above said pulley. This tube is of sulllcient diameter to accommodate various sizes of wires which the machine is adapted to operate on, and is arranged with its axis alined approximately with the space between the rollers 12, 13.
In operation the screw 38 is operated to adjust the machine to the gage of the wire,
it is desired to produce, and the carriage ad usted by means of the nucrometer adjustment 19, 20 toward the abrading member,
and after the various adjustments of the rollers and Wire holding means have been completed, the Wire is pushed through the tube-to the rollers by which it is rotated and fed crosswise of the abrader 1, the abrader l'taking off a predetermined amount of all sides of the Wire leaving the Wire exactly circular in' cross section and of a certain gage determined as herein explained.

In a Wire finishing machine, bed, a rotatable abrading member supported there-- by, a carriage movable upon the bed toward and from the operative face of the abrading member, means for shifting the carriage, means mounted in the carriage for feeding the element to be operated upon in a direction across the operative-face of the abrad ing member, and additional means mounted in the carriage for holding said element in cooperative relation with the feeding means and in a predetermined position relative to said operative face of the abrading member, said means including a part adjustable in the carriage and toward and from said operative face of the abrading member, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a wire finishing machine, the combination of a frame, anfabrading member, a carriage movable on the frame relatively to the abrading member, means for rotating the wire and feeding the same to the abrading member," said means comprising a pair of rotating drums on each side of the abrading member and arranged to rotate and feed the wire axially means located near the ends of each pair of drums for pressing downwardly on the wire, and means in front of the abradihg member for engaging the under side and the. front side of the wire, intermediate of the pair of drums, the last-mentioned means including parts adjustable Yltlfltlh' and horizontally to conform to the size of the wire, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10. In a wire finishing machine, the combination of a frame, an abrading member, a carriage movable on the frame toward. and from the abracling member, means for retating the wire and feeding the same to the abrading member, supports for carrying said means, the supports being mounted on the *arriage and adjustable on the carriage toward and from the ahrading member, lllLtlllS for feeding the carriage, and means tor adjusting the supports on the carriage, substantially as and. for the purpose specified.
