DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14:, 1916.
Application filed May 21, 1914. Serial No. 839,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Josnr NADEL and ITARRY ENGEL, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for displaying such articlesas ostrich plumes or feathers of other varieties.
It also relates to packing such articles for storage or transportation.
The object of the invention is to provide means for insuring the safe storage or shipment of plumes or other fragile articles and also for displaying such articles to the best advantage without detaching the article from the device.
The character of the device adapts it spe cially to the display and safe packing of fragile and delicate articles which are damaged easily by handling and for which it is desirable to provide strong but lightweight means for securing the articles in packing boxes.
Referring to the accompanying"drawings which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 represents a top view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device with the box to which it is attached indicated in section. Fig. 3 is a top view of another form. Fig. 4: is a section taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
In the drawing, l'is a box or packing case made of paste-board or other suitable material.
2-2 are partitions, preferably made of the same material as the box to which they are secured and which are provided for separating the several plumes or other articles packed in the same box. The partitions are usually made to conform to the general contour of the plumes to prevent them from getting out of shape in transportation or when subjected to shocks or jars during handling.
During transportation the box would be provided with a cover not shown in the drawin s.
i flat plate 3, preferably made of sheet metal, is attached to one side of the box 1 by means of two attachment projections 4 and 4 formed on the sides of the plate 3. These projections are pointed so that they may readily be forced through the side of the box and bent over in order to retain the plate 3 securely. I
The lower end of the plate 3 is bent into a hinge 5 which retains a hinge-pin 6.
Around theends of the hinge-pin 6 are bent plate 8 are formed hinged members 9 and 9*,
bent around hinge-pin 10 which is retained by the hinge 11 formed on the plate 12. The plates 3, 8 and 12 are, therefore, joined by means of the hinge- pins 6 and 10, the whole constituting a double hinge. As shown, the axes of the hinge members are disposed horizontally, to permit of the plume being swung vertically into and out of the con tainer. The plate 12 has formed in it a pocket13 into which the stem 11 of the plume 15 is inserted. The pocket 13 tapers from its open end so that the stem of the plume is wedged into it and is securely retained in place by frictional engagement between the pocket 13 and the flat strip 16, made of paste-board or other suitable material, which is attached to the plate 12 by means of fasteners 17 and 1'7, such as eyelets or rivets.
In Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 the plume is shown inclosed in the box 1 and lying flat against the bottom of it. lVhen it is to be displayed, the plates 8 and 12 which are free to turn on the hinges are swung upward until the feather is lifted entirely out of the box 1. lVith the double hinged device above described, the entire plume is displayed, as the length of the two hinged members is such that when they are swung into the vertical position, indicated in dotted lines at the right in Fig. 2, the upper end of the plate 12 is substantially co-incident with the top of the box 1. If it is desired to display the plume at some other angle the plate 12 may be turned on the hinge 10 as indicated in the dotted lines to the left in Fig. The plumes or other articles displayed may be set at any desired angle and in various po sitions in relation to the box by swinging the plate 8 on the hinge pin 6 and setting the plate 12 in any desired relation to the plate 8. As an example of this, the hinge'plates may be set in the relative relation indicated in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 2 the plate 8 is shown in dotted lines engaging with the spring ears 18 and 18 which are formed on the opposite sides of the plate 3. These ears are provided for holding the plate 8 securely in place in the position indicated by the dotted lines. Usually the friction of the hinge is suflicient to retain the parts in any position in which they are set, but the springears are pro- 1 vided to retain the plate 8 in the usual display position.
Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 illustrate a modification designed to increase the friction of the hinges connecting the three plates 3, 8 and 12 to insure the maintenance of anyrelative angles in which they may be set. This is accomplished by cutting slots 19, 19 19 and 19 in the plate 8 and bending the hinge members 9 and 9 so that they, constitute springs for forcing the knurled or roughened hinge- members 5 and 11 formed on the plates 3 and 12 respectively, against thev lips 8 and 8 of the plate 8. The knurling on the hinge members 5 and 11 increases the friction to a point which insures maintenance of the several members of the hinge in any relative position'in which they are set. v p
Several units of the form above described are usually contained in one box. A portion the side walls of the container with its lower side at a distance from the bottom thereof greater than onehalf the depth of the container, an intermediate hinge member attached to the lower side of said first hinge member and of a length substantially equal to the distance from the lower side of the first hinge member to the bottom of the container, and a third hinge member pivotally attached to said intermediate hinge member at the lower side of said intermediate hinge member and normally extending'at right angles thereto along the bottom of the container, said third hinge member being provided with means for securing a plume thereto, the axes of the said hinge members being horizontal to permit of the plume being swung vertically into and out of the container.
2. A combined packing box and display device for plumes comprising a box-like container, and a compound hinge device within the container comprising a hinge member attached to one side'of the container with its upper edge adjacent the top thereof, an intermediate hinge member pivotally attached to the lower side of said first hinge member, said intermediate hinge member being of a greater vertical length than said first hinge member and normally extending to the bottom of the container, a third hinge member pivotally attached to said intermediate hinge at the lower side of said intermediate hinge member and normally extending at right angles thereto along the bottom of the container, said third hinge member being provided with means for securing a plume thereto, the axes of the said hinge members being horizontal to permit of the plume being swung vertically into and out of the container, and means for retaining said intermediate and third hinge members in various angular positions with respect to the wall of the container.
3. A combined packing box and display device for plumes, comprising a box-like container, a fixed and two movable hinge connected members within the container, means carried by one of the hinge members for retaining the other hinge members in vertical position with one member against the wall'of the container, means for retaining said two movable hinge members in various angular adjusted positions with respect to the wall of the container and means for attaching a plume to said hinge members.
Signed New York, this 18th at the city, county and State of day of May, 1914.
