CHARLES I. EVANS, JR", F DALLAS, TEXAS.
CARBON-GRIPPER AND MARGIN-INDICATOR FOR WRITING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed October 15, 1915. Serial No. 56,061.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, (humans 1. EVANS, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Carbon-Gripper and lilargin-Indicator for Writing-Machines, of which the following is a a specification.
' typewriter, all models; Fox typewriter, all
models; L. C. Smith & Bro. typewriter, all models; Remington Monarch typewriter, all models; R yal typewriter, all models; Oliver typewriter, all models; and all other typewriting machines to which the device may be attachable, the same device to be used on all of the above mentioned typewriting machines, except that the means of attachment to the paper table will be varied so as to make it adaptable to each kind of typeriting machine.
The objects of my improvement are: First. To present to the view of the typewriter operator the full page of typewritten matter, as rapidly as the same may be written, thereby making the reading matter on each page visible as the same is written. Second. To indicate with certainty to the eye of the operator the approach of the bottom margin of the paper upon which the writing is done, and to secure uniformity in said margin. Third. To secure in position and prevent from displacement sheets of carbon paper when being used between sheets of writing paper for the purpose of making manifold copies. Fourth. To in dicate with approximate certainty and to secure uniformity of the top margin of paper when inserted in the paper feed cylinder or platen of the typcwriting machine.
Fifth. To provide means by which the hinged arms of the device may be opened to receive and discharge paper.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, with the guide members folded. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe device for clamping the paper holder on the paper table of thc typewriting machine. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the paper holding device mounted on the writing machine paper table. Fig. at is a cross section of one of the side frame pieces. Fig. 5 illustrates a. variation in the means for mounting the paper holder on the paper table of the writing machine.
The same characters of reference are used to indicate same parts throughout the several views.
lhe paper holder has a frame composed of side-bars l and 2, with a cross-bar 3 at the upper-side. This frame is mounted on the paper table of a typewriting machine by means of clamping members l, and apivoted member which is pivoted or connected to the member a by an upstanding tongue 6, which is formed on the member 5 and by the lips T, which are formed on the member}. The typewriter paper table is received between the forward ends 8 of the clamping members, and the clamping members are secured to the paper table by means of a thumb screw 9. The ends of, the frame members 1 and 2 are received in sockets formed on the member 4. The clamping'member shown in Fig. 2 must be varied to engage the paper table on the different types of writing machines to set the holding memher at the proper angle in front of the operator, and this angle should be approximately forty-five degrees. The ends of the frame members 1 and 2 may be made cylindrical at 11- for the purpose of entering the sockets 10. If preferable the side members 1 and 2 may be integral with the sockets 10 and the members 4. If desired the clamping members will not be used in attaching the device to the writing machine known as the Remington N0. 6, but the ends of the frame members 1 and 2 are to be inserted direetly in the sockets provided on said machinefor the reception of the legs of the paper table ofsaid writing machine. The paper holderis provided with swinging guide arms which are pivotally connected to the lateral arms 12 projecting from the sides of the frame members 1 and 2. The swing ing guide member's consist of bars 13, pro-. vided with bent arms 14, which are hingedly connected to the arms 12. The lateral arms 12 are drooped more or less, and the arms 14 have shanks 15 which reach down to the arms 12, the object being to provide plenty of space between the arms 12 andli for the movement of the paper, so that the edges of the paper will not be caught against the arms.
The lower end 16 of the guide members are to be curved ,outwardly or upwardly sutliciently to receive the paper when the paperis being fed back on to the holder, after having passed through the paper feed cylinder or platen of the typewriting machine.
.The guide members 13 lie loosely on the paper without pressure, and will not necessarily touch the paper, unless there are many sheets of paper. The guide members '13 may be swung outwardly as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of receiving the paper when first placed on the machine. When the paper is to be removed from the holder the guide members are so light and so easily movable that the withdrawal of the paper will swing them outwardly automatically. After the paper is placed on the frame members 1 and 2 and the cross members 17 the guide members 13 may be swungback over and on top of the paper for preventing the paper from being thrown or blown out of place as the writing is being done. The guide members are particularly useful when manifold copies are being made with carbon paper, because all of the sheets of paper and carbon sheets of paper will be held safely in place, without entangling the sheets or creasing the same, as well as'preventing the sheets of paper from being displaced by air currents. The frame members 1 and 2 may be provided with spacing devices 18, which are movable, for conveniently locating and definitely indicating the approach of the bottom margin, after the paper has passed through the platen of the writing machine. A movable marker 19 may be mounted on either frame 13 of the guide member for conveniently spacing and indicating the top margin, and making the top margin uniform;
Various changes may be made in the sizes and proportions of the various parts of a the paper holder without departing from my invention. v v
The variation shown in Fig. 5 consists of tubes or sockets-20, which may be inserted in or made as a part of paper table 21 of the writing machine, and constitute sockets to receive the shanks 11 of the frame pieces 1 and 2. The tubes 20 maybe attached to the typewriter paper table in any suitable manner, or the tubes may be made as a part of thepaper'table, the object being to provide some holding device from which the paper holder may be readily detached.
