To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN NnLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a jar wrench which may be applied to and used with any of the different sizes of covers or caps of the style used on Mason and other like jars now on the market, and which will conform exactly to the contour thereof, a flexible member being provided to fit around and have a complete peripheral contact therewith.
A further object is to provide the flexible member so connected that adjustments thereof may be made to accommodate the various sizes of covers or caps and to also permit the adaptation of the same tool to hold the jar as well as to obtain a grip upon the cap, it being of course understood that a duplicate tool or other suitable gripping tool can be used on the cap when a wrench after my invention is fitted to the body of v the jar.
Yet another object is to so construct the adjustable connection for the flexible member and to so mount the flexible gripping member with the handle of the wrench that the same tension may be exerted upon the flexible member in any of the adjustments of the wrench and the gripping action around the cover or cap or the jar is accomplished by exerting a peripheral drawing strain upon the flexible member to enperspective of my improved wrench with a jar cap illustrated as hjeldthereby. A flexible gripping member 5 which may .be a wire cable, a single metal strand, or
other suitable strand has one end thereof passed through the rolled portion 6 of the jaw 7 provided on the handle 1 and a rivet 8 is passed through the tongue portion 4 and through the body of the jaw to hold this end of the gripping band 5 rigidly secured in place within the rolled portion.
The tongue 4: of the jaw 9 provided on the handle 2 is rolled over in the same manner ever, this tongue is disposed to have a clearance from the body portion of the jaw and the tubular roll 10 is made of an internal diameter slightly greater than the transverse dimension of the band 5 to thus permit free sliding movement of the band through this rolled portion; A gripping j aw llis received. between the body portion of the jaw 9 and the tongue 4 thereof and a rivet 12 or other suitable means is passed. through the aw member 9 and through this gripping jaw 11 'to pivot the gripping jaw with the gripping face 13 thereof ad acent the part of the flexible band 5 that is disposed through the rolled portion 10. lever end 1 1 of the gripping aw 11 is ex-- tended. to overlie the handle 1 at a point beyond'the pivotal connection at 15 of the two handle members 1 and 2 and this overlying portion has the elongated slot 16 formed therethrough to receive the pin 17 which is secured to the'handle 1 to work loosely in the slot and it will thus be seen that as the two handles are gripped or brought together, the engagement of the pin l7 with the sides of the slot 16 will cause this'lever end 14 of the gripping aw 11 to Patented Feb. 8, 1916.

As the handles 1 and 2 are released and are moved apart in their swinging relation around the pivot pin 15, the engagement of the pin 17 in slot 16 will cause the gripping jaw 11 to be swung in an opposite direction and the gripping face 13 will be disengaged from the flexible band 5 to permit adjustment of this hand through the rolled portion 1.0 to accommodate the wrench to grip jars and caps of various sizes, it being preferable that a stop 18 be provided on the free end of the band 5 to prevent entire withdrawal of this band from its passage through the rolled portion 10. In some instances it may be found desirable to provide a flange 19 on the outer edge of each of the handle members and to bend this flange down to extend at right angles to the main portion of the handles to form a broader gripping surface to, afford a better bearing upon the hand of the operator, and also in certain circumstances it may be found desirable to con struct the flexible gripping band 5 to be in the form of a strap rather than a round strand and in such instances the rolled portions 6 and 10 of the jaws 7 and 9, respectively, will of course be structurally varied to accommodate and hold such a strap band.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a jar wrench which may be used to grip and hold a jar or a cover or cap therefor and which has the parts thereof so arranged that the same tool may be used upon jars and caps of various sizes and an equally eflicient gripping action is obtained in each of the various instances,
also it will be evident that while the wrench has been described as particularly adapted for use in holding jars and the caps or covers therefor, the structure by but slight variation and structural rearrangement to secure a stronger tool could be just as readily adapted for use as a pipe wrench and in other like connections where a wrench is desired which will grip a cylindrical body from all points around the periphery thereof and will maintain this grip constant during operation.
lVhile I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, it will be understood that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several elements of the structure without departing from the spirit and scope of my in vention, and hence I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim 1. A jar wrench comprising handles pivoted together, a flexible band secured to one of said handles at the one end thereof, means provided on said second handle through which the free end of said flexible band passes, and a movable member between and connecting said first handle and said means in such a relation that as the handles are manipulated in an operative relation the band is gripped and held by said means and member.
2. A wrench comprising handles pivoted together, jaws provided on said handles, a flexible band connected with one of said jaws and having an adjustable connection with the second of said jaws, and means connected with one of said jaws and with the handle of the other of said jaws to be brought into operation by the gripping of the handles to engage with and maintain the flexible band in its adjusted relation.
8. A wrench comprising handles pivoted together, jaws provided on said handles beyond the point of pivot, a flexible band secured to one of said jaws and adapted to be slidably adjustable through a rolled portion provided on the second of said jaws, and a gripping member connected with said second jaw adjacent the rolled portion and with the handle of said first jaw to be brought into operation upon the gripping of the handles to hold the flexible band against movement from the adjusted posi tion.

A wrench comprising handles pivoted together, jaws provided on each of said handles, a flexible band secured at its end to one of said jaws and looped around to pass through a rolled portion provided on the second of said jaws and to have sliding adjustment therethrough, a gripping jaw mounted on said second jaw adjacent the point of disposition of the flexible band therein and provided with an elongated slot, and a pin passed through said slot and secured with said first handle to impart a rocking motion to said gripping jaw upon operative movement of said handles to thus secure the flexible band to be of a fixed length.
5. A wrench comprising handles pivoted together, jaws provided on each of said handles, a flexible band rigidly connected with one of said jaws, a rolled portion provided on the second of said jaws through which the flexible band is passed to be capable of endwise sliding adjustment, a gripping jaw pivoted adjacent the sliding connection of said flexible band with said second jaw, a gripping face provided on said gripping jaw eccentrically with respect to the point of pivot, and a connection between said gripping jaw and the handle on which said first jaw, is formed so provided that as the handles are brought together the eccentric gripping face is brought into engagement with the flexible band and this band is held against displacement from its adjusted position.
6. A wrench comprising handles stamped and bent up from single sheet metal blanks and pivoted together in a crossed relation to have jaws formed as a part thereof, a flexible band connected. at its one end with one of said jaws to be secured in a fixed relation therewith, a portion of the second of said jaws bent to form a rolled tubular portion through which the free end of said flexible band is passed to have sliding movement, a gripping jaw pivoted to said second jaw to have an eccentric gripping face thereon working within the rolled portion adjacent the passage of the band therethrough, said gripping jaw provided with an elongated slot at a point away from the immediate gripping portion, and a pin passed through said slot and secured to the handle of said first gripping jaw in suchv a relation that as gripping movement is exerted upon said handles the grippingj aw is engaged with the flexible band and the band is held in a fixed relation at a point of passage through said rolled portion.
7. A wrench comprising handles bent and formed from sheet metal and pivoted together in a crossed relation, jaws provided on said handle beyond the pivotal connection therebetween, tongue portions provided on each of said jaws to be bent back against the body thereof to form a rolled portion, a flexible band received at its one end through the rolled portion provided on one of said jaws, means to secure the por tionbent back'on said jaw to clamp the end. of the flexible band rigidly with said jaw, said band looped and at its free end passed through the rolled portion of the second of said jaws to have free sliding movement therein, a gripping. jaw received between the bent back portion of said second jaw and the body thereof, a pivot pin connecting said gripping jaw with said second jaw in such a relation that the gripping face thereof works within the rolled portion of said jaw, and said gripping jaw provided with an elongated slot therethrough, a pin passed through said elongated slot and secured in the handle of said first jaw, and all of said parts so arranged that as the handles are brought together to cause a tighteningof the flexible band around the parts to be secured thereby the gripping jaw is brought into engagement with said flexible band to hold the band in the proper adjusted relation.
