' HOSE-REZRAIRING TOOL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JosEPB: F. Yonsns, a citizen of the United States, residin at Depew, county of Erie, and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Repairing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tools and particularly to wire working tools. More specifically my invention relates to a wire working tool especially adapted for mending hose and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a hand operated tool by means of which the usual looped wire fastening may be firmly clamped about a hose or the like and secured in clamped position. Further objects of my invention are to provide a tool of the class mentioned which shall be of simple construction, easy to o crate and of low cost to manufacture. ther objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in'view my inventlon comprises a tool of the plier type equipped with cooperating means on one of the jaws and one of the handle portions for engaging and clamping a looped wire about a hose or other article. My invention further consists in a device as mentioned in combination with means for cutting the wire after having been clamped in position. My invention consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the tool in itspreferred form, and I Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof illustrating the same in conjunction with the looped wire, and in position prior to stretching or clamping the latter.
The tool is of the plier type comprising a pair of jaws 1 and 2 provided with the usual handles 3 and 4 respectively which are integral with the jaws and pivotally connected as at 5. l/Vire cutting elements 5 are provided and these, as well as the aforementioned parts may be of any preferred form.
In mending hose, or securing couplings thereto a looped wire 00 is usually employed and it is diflicult to secure this wire sulfi- Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d Au 30 1921. Application filed March 23, 1921.

ciently tight upon the hose to avoid leakage. The primary object of my present invention is to provide a simple device for securely fastening or clamping the wire as about the hose. To this end, the jaw 2 of the tool is provided with a notch or notches 7 to receive the looped portion of the wire and the handle 3 of the opposite jaw is provided with pro ections 8 about which the free ends of the wire 02 are looped. In using the device the looped wire is placed about the hose as indicated in the drawings andthe looped end w thereof is engaged in the notch or notches 7. The handles 3 and 4 are spread apart as indicated in Fig. 2 and the free ends as" of the wire are looped about the projections 8, the wire being drawn tight while doing so. The handles 3 and 4: are then pressed toward each other and it is obvious that this increases the distance between the notch 7 and projections 8 thereby drawing the loop tightly about the hose. Then, by swinging the tool upwardly with the loop portion m of the wire as a pivot, the ends of the wire are bent over the portion m thereby securing the looped wire securely in position. The ends of the wires are then released from the projections 8, which is readily done by spreading the handles apart, and the free ends of the wire out by means of the wire cutting elements 6. The free ends of the wire being cut to the'desired length, the tool may be used as ordinary pliers for bending the short free ends downwardly in position against the hose.
Although the plier portion of the device may be made in substantially any manner, I prefer that the elements be formed by stamping the same from heavy gage sheet metal, and it is this form that I have illustrated in the drawings. As illustrated, the side portions 2 of the jaw 2 are formed with downwardly and forwardly projecting ears 2" forming the notches 7 and the handle 3 is formed with integral rearwardly projecting ears constituting the projections 8.
I claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of pliers, the end of one jaw of the pliers being provided with a notch and rearwardly extending wire engaging projec tions on the handle of the opposite jaw, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of pliers, consisting of the usual jaws and pivoted handles formed of name to this specification in the presence of sheet metal stampings, outwardly and fortwo subscribing Witnesses.
