ABRADING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 18, 1916.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,226.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST e. K. Asmsolv, a'subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook concise, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in abrading devices and has particular referenlce to abrading devices for pointing penc1 s.
NVhile my invention is particularly designed for pointing pencils it is applicable for various uses.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated one embodiment of the same in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed view, partly in section, showing the means for holding the abrading material in position; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectlon on the line 4-401? Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated I provide a body 1 which is provided with a handle extension 2, having a hole in the end thereof of sufiicient size to slip over the head of a tack, nail or hook, the handle I and'body being preferably formed of fiber and being comparatively thin in cross section. I preferably form the body and handle of fiber comparatively thin in cross section as the fiber is sufficiently hard to form a good bearing surface and at the same time is slightly resilient or springy. The body forms a support for the abrading surface 3, which consists of emery cloth substantially the same width as the support, folded over the end of the support and having its two free ends secured to the support near the handle by the clamping plates 4 and 5. By this arrangement both sides of the support are covered with abrading material which may readily be removed for the pur-...
pose of renewal.
Each clamping plate is provided with a downturned edge 6 adapted to engage the abradlng material and with a pair of downwardly extending lugs 7 on the rear end thereof adapted to engage in openings 8 in the handleto prevent the clamping plate from twisting. The plates are secured in positlon and clamped upon the emery cloth by a bolt 9 adapted to pass through openings in the plates and support and having a thumb nut 10.
It will be seen that I have provided an abrading device the abrading surface of which may be readily removed and renewed when worn out.- The cloth being clamped on the support at the free ends only, it is more or less loosely fitted over the support and W111 flap when the end of the device is tapped against the edge of a desk or other stationary object. This dislodges the acc'umulat'ed dust in the cloth and the device is thus readily kept clean.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by.Let-' ters Patent is I As a new article ofmanufacture, an abradlng device comprlslng a fiat holder formed of Springy material and being comparatively thin in cross-section and provided at one end with a handle, a flexible strip of abrading material folded over the opposite end of said holder and having its free ends extending rearwardly to a point near the handle, and lying contiguous to the flat surface of said holder, and means for securing the free ends of the abradingmaterial to the holder, whereby when the device is tapped against an object the holder will spring to cause the abraded material to be snapped out of the flexible strip.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ERNST G. K. ANDERSON.
