This invention relates'to adding and recording machines, and it consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinaftershown, de-
scribed' and claimed.
This invention relates particularly to that class of adding and recording machines which utilize two or more type-carriers which are operable side by side for recording purposes, and in which two ornnore characters can Heretofore these'machines have been constructed' in this manner, mechanism which is operated automatically to add all of the numbers recorded. machines have been provided with mechanism to eliminate or dissipate from the number in the adding mechanism the last number recorded, which operation is desirable in cases of error.
Occasions arise when it is desirable to record columns or lists of numbers, make and record a total of some of the numbers so recorded, and omit others from the total.
These numbers should be recorded in consecutive order irrespective of whether theyare to be added or not.
The object of the present invention is to produce a machine of the type referred to which shall contain mechanism operableor ad ustable to permit subsequent operation of the recording instrumentalities to record numbers without causing the totalizing mechanism to operate to add such numbers.
A particular object of the invention is to produce a machine of the class referred to comprising mechanism operable to record numbers, mechanism operable automatically to'add numbers recorded, and mechanism operable 0r adjustable eifectively to prevent the addition of numbers by the adding mechanism when the recording mechanism is operated to record such numbers.

In the drawings whichform part of this specification I have illustrated the invention incorporated in .and forming part of that particular machine shown and described in the said Dorman and Clayton Patent No. 1,053,943, though it will be obvious that the invention may readily be incorporated into machines of various other makes.
Other objects and advantages than those specifically named will be made obvious by the following description without particular mention.

Fig. 6 is a perspective View of the key for the eliminating train and the totals recording key, and
also a locking device operated by each of said keys, whereby, when one of. said keys is operated, the other one of said keys is lockedagainst operation. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of the drivers or hammer section of the machine and a portion of the key-board, illustrating. the entire train of mechanism whose operation or adjustment prevents addition of any number or numbers recorded. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the devices which cause a distinguishing character to be printed opposite from the recorded numbers that are not included in the total. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the devices whereby the totalizing mechanism is rendered inoperative or idle when the .eliminating mechamsm is operated or adjusted. Fig. 10 is a cross sectional view of the machine just above the key board and the transversely movable pin carriage.
The entire machine is supported upon the base 1, the recording and operating mechanisms being upheld by suitableframes 2. Av platen 3 is supported in a carriage 4 which is arranged to travel laterally on a carriage support or track 5, thereby affording means for moving the platen laterally for word,
letter, and column spacing, and other pur-' poses involved in the operation, of'the most efficient machines of this class. A series of typewriting type-bars 6 are disposed in position to strike the front of the platen to record words and other data, causing inipressions on thepaper through the medium of a ribbon 7 which winds on spools at the sides of the machine. The type-bars are operated by trains of connections connecting them with their respective keys 8 which are arranged in, rows on the key-board at the front of the machine. Suitable mechanism is provided in connection with the platen for rotating the same as required to effect movement of the'paper for line spacing. The construction and arrangement of these various parts and the method oftheir operation are all fully disclosed in the said Dorman. a nd Clayton Patent No. 1,053,943 and also in the British Patent No. 854, of 1901, before mentioned, and, therefore, do not require specific or detailed illustration or description in this specification.
The adding mechanism and the recording instrumentalities thereof are operably located within the same machine with the typewriting mechanism just above briefly described. A number of-type-carriers 9 are operably supported between the frames 2 and on their front ends a series of types 10 are movably supported. There are ten of" set up and permits them to be actuated forwardly until they are stopped in position to record the number. When so positioned the required types are in alinement in front of the platen in position to be driven to record. When the actuating force is removed from the shaft 13 said shaft is drawn back ward and the type-carriers are moved to idle position by springs 15. The carriage 12 is of that type which moves one space cross wise of the machine-at each operation of one of the keys 11, and carries a series of movableparts 11 which are pushed up by the keys to represent numbers. The step by step movement of the carriage may be controlled in'a ny known manner, one way being by use of an escapement. This operation and arrangement of the carriage are de scribed in the Hopkins patent aforesaid, and said parts are used in the machine and known commercially. The specific construction and arrangement of these parts are immaterial in so far as my present invention 18 concerned, and in practice Lhave adapted my invention to the machine in which said parts are used substantial-l as described in the Hopkins patent. .set of gear. parts 16 are movable with the type-carriers. A group of totalizing wheels 17 (Fig. 1) are mounted on a shaft 18 which is mounted in oblique slots in arms 19 attached to a rock shaft'20, so that by oscillating said arms forward and backward, the wheels will be raised and lowered; alternately, into. and out of mesh with the gear parts 16. The link 21 is connected to one of the arms 19 and projects forwardly adjacent to a lever 22 which is attached to the end of a rock shaft 23. Said lever-22 has a projection 24 near each end, one being above the upper edge of the link 21 and one extending under the lower edge of said link. Notches 25 are formed in the edges of said link 21, and it is arranged so that when the machine is idle the projection 24 at the upper end of the lever 22 rests within the notch 25 in the upper edge of the link. Rocking of the shaft 23 to swing the upper end of the lever 22 backward causes the link 21 to be pushed backward. This results in swinging the arms 19 backward and draws the wheels 17 downward out of mesh with the gear parts 16. It is arranged that these parts shall operate automatically upon oper ation of the main shaft 13, all of which is fully described and illustrated in the Hop kins Patent No. 1,039,130 referred to. The arrangement is such that the wheels 17 are lowered in this manner at the start of the shaft 13 and before the gear parts 16 start forward when any number is being recorded and are raised into mesh with the gear parts the moment the shaft 13 starts on its return and just before the gear parts start backward. Thus the numbers recorded are introduced into and added within the wheels 17. Operation of the shaft 23 to effect meshing and unmeshing of the wheels 17 and gear parts 16 by elevation and lowering of the wheels is accomplished by a cam 26 attached to the shaft 13 rubbing against a lever 27 on the shaft 23. .The lever 27 is loose on the shaft 23 and has a pin 28 pro jecting between the arms of a bifurcated member 29 which. is rigid with the shaft 23, thereby allowing the lever 27 certain free movement without effecting the shaft. The shaft 23 and the parts carried thereby are drawn and held in proper position when idle by a centering device 30 of known construction.
When the shaft .13 is started to record a number the cam 26 (Fig. 7)'rubs the lower end of the lever 27 and thereby rocks the shaft 23 which, as described, causes the lever 22 thereon to push the link 21 rearward to lower the Wheels 17. The rear edge of the cam 26 is eventually carried beyond the lever 27 and this occurs, as fully described in Patent 1,053,943 aforesaid, just about the time the types are driven to record, which is after the gear parts 16 have stopped. Then when the parts are started on their return-by the springs 15 the cam 26 rocks.
gear parts 16 and causes the number that had been recorded to be added in the wheels. -It is obvious, therefore, that, if the lowerend of the lever 27 be swung forward beyond possible contact with the cam 26 so as to lower the wheels 17 out of mesh with the gear parts 16, and so that the cam on backward movement will not rub against said lever to raise the wheels, said Wheels will remain lowered out of mesh with the gear parts, and the gear parts will return to idle position without causing that number which had been recorded to be introduced or added in the wheels. The mechanism for preventing this articulation of the adding mechanism and recording mechanism to permit independent operation of the recording mechanism is the special'subject-matter" of this invention, but it is to be understood that such subject-matter comprises part of a complete adding and recording machine which is operable to perform the functions of recording and adding numbers. The types are .driven torecord by a series of drivers or hammers 31 which are pivoted on a shaft 32 (Figs. 1 and 7). These hammers are' arranged in a group, usually referred to as the hammer section, and are held in idle position by a series of pawls 33, provided with hooks to engage with similar hooks on the hammers. To each pawl a trip-bar 34 is pivoted, said trip-bars extending rearward from the pawls through a slotted supporting member 35. Springs 36 are connected to said trip-bars in such manner as to draw them rearward to hold the pawls in engagement with the hammers. A
rod 37 limits rearward swing of the pawls when they are disengaged from the hammers. Two arms 38 on the shaft 32 carry a bar 39 extending crosswise under the rear extensions of the hammers and acting to restore the hammers to idle position, as shown in Fig. 7, when the shaft 32 is rocked to raise said bar. Automatic devices, which it is not necessary here to illustrate nor de scribe, act to rock the shaft 32 and lower the bar 39 during forward movement of the type-carriers to record a number, and when the hammers are released from their pawls said hammers are thrown against the types by springs 40, thereby driving the types to .record. Each, of the trip-bars 34 has a tongue or extension 41 extending under the one in the next lower order so that when any one of said'trip-bars is raised it lifts up all others in the lower orders. When idle the rear ends of the trip-bars 34 are below the are in which the bar 39 is carried so that said bar 39 will pass above all of the tripbars except those Whose ends have been raised. Having described the essential features of one type of machine with' which this mechanism is combinable, I will now describe the mechanism for performing the functions outlined. Within the key-board a special key 42 (Figs. 3, 7 and 10) is arranged, said key having a stem which operates through a slot in the key-board plate 43 and through a slot in the base 1. A rock shaft 44 is sup ported in bearings 45 attached to the under side of the base and has an arm 46 extending forwardly into a slot 47 in the lower nected to an arm 49 on said shaft 44 and to the base of the machine, thereby holding the shaft in idle position, and upholding the key 42. A rearwardly extending arm 50 on the shaft 44 is pivoted to the lower end of a link 51 whose upper end is connected to an arm 52 attached to and extending obliquely downward and rearward from a rock-shaft 53 mounted under the hammer section. An arm 54 on said rock I shaft supports a depending link 55 provided with an elongated vertical slot 56. Said link extends alongside of the lever 27 and a pin 57 on said lever extends through the slot 56, (Figs. 7,8 and 9) and permits movement of the lever 27by the cam 26 without disturbing the link 55 or the parts connected therewith. However, if the key 42 be depressed as far as it will go it causes the arm 54 to raise a sufficient distance to swing the lower end of the lever 27- forwardly beyond possible engagement with the cam 26 when it swings forward and backward while recording anumber. This operation of the lever 27 rocks the shaft 23 'and pushes, the link 21 rearward, thereby lowering the wheels 17 out of mesh with the gear parts '16 just the same as when operatedby the cam 26.: By holding'the key'42 downward the cam 26' can swing in both directions without contact with the lever27, thereby permitting the type-carriers vto travel in both-directions and to record a number without operating the total Wheels 17, said type-carriers and the othenparts of the recording mechanism operating freely to perform their functions, the numbers sorecorded being excluded or eliminated from the total of other numbers that may be recorded and added.
The numbers so recorded and eliminated from the total may, for
' purposes of identification, be designated by printing a suitable character opposite therefrom. [A lever 58 (Fig. 7) is suspended in the hammer section and has a vertical arm and a horizontal arm. The vertical-arm extends behind a pin 59 on a lever 60 extending obliquely downward and rearward from the shaft 23, so that when the shaft 23 is rocked by depression of the key 42 the lever 58will be oscillated. A plate 61 whose upper edge is even with the upper edges of-the trip-bars 34 is pivoted at itsfront end to the trip-bar inthe highest order, and its rear end is even with the rear ends of said tripbars. The horizontal arm of the lever 58 is underneath the plate 61 and, when oscillated,
raises the rear end ofnsaid plate into the path of travel of the bar 39, without, however, raising the end of the trip-bar 34. The bar 39 moving forward strikes the end of the plate 61 and releases the pawl 33 in the highest order, thereby permitting the hammer 31 in that order to be thrown by its.
It will be remembered that, as fully'described in my said joint application above identified when any number is recorded all of the type-carriers move forward to present the foremost types thereon, representing 0 at theprinting or recording line. It
is obvious that there is no use for a 0 on "the type-carrier in highest order, and that type may be displaced bya type ofa suitdesired for it is not essential that any par ticuiar or specific character he used. After the type-carriers have stopped side by; side in position to aline the required types the necessary for recording the number, number of hammers are released, as described above, to drive the types to record. The hammer in the highest order will also be released since the plate 61 is pushed forward by the bar 39. The foremost type on that type carrier will thereby be driven to record a character, in this instance on E opposite from the recorded number. Elevation of the plate 61 does not disturb the tripbars 34 in the lower orders since said plate is independently movable. By holding the ke 42 down until the type-carriers return to idle position the number will have been recorded without addition or registration thereof in the totalizer.

It will be obvious that there'may be many alterations and VitllfitlOIlS in the construction and arrangement of this invention, and it may be used in other embodiments without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

In an adding machine, a type-carrier, a series of type carried by said type-carrier, a hammer operable to drive said type to print and movable to and from a retracted position, a pawl engaging and holding said hammer in its retracted position, a movable actuator, a tripping element normally supported out of the path of movement of said actuator, means controlled by said typecarrier for moving said tripping element into the path of movement of said actuator, an additional tripping element normally out of the path of movement of said actuator, and means for moving said additional trippingelement into the path of movement of said actuator independently of said firstnamed tripping element whereby said pawl may be released by said additional tripping element.
32. In an adding machine, a type-carrier, type supported by said type-carrier, a hammer operable to drive said type to print, a pawl holding said hammer, a movable actuator, means controlled by said type-carrier and by said actuator for releasing said pawl from said hammer, and additional optionally operable means arranged to cooperate with said actuator to release said pawl from said hammer.
33. The combination with type-carriers,
numeral type on said type-carriers, a hammer for each type-carrier, latches for said hammers, means for operating said typecarriers to record numbers, means for releasing one of said hammers for each digit to be recorded, and adding mechanism, of a key adjustable effectively to prevent said adding mechanism from operating, and means controlled by said key for causing one of said hammers to operate, substantially as specified.
34. An adding and recording machine comprising a platen arranged to hold paper, a series of type-carriers, a series of numeral type on each type-carrier, hammers, springs for driving said hammers against said type, hooks holding said hammers, a release device connected to each of said hooks whereby said hooks will be automatically released when the corresponding type-carriers are operated, a special release device for one of said hooks, and a key for positioning saidspecial release device whereby the pawl will be released from the corresponding hammer at the. will of the operator, substantially as specified.
35. In an adding machine, the combination of a series of'type, a hammer for driving said type to print, a pawl holding said hammer, a bar connected'to said pawl, means for engaging said bar to release sald pawl to enable said hammer to operate, a special element for releasing'said pawl, and a key for operating said special element, substantially as specified.
36. In an adding machine, the combination with the type-driving hammers, latches holding said hammers, a trip-bar for each latch and a plate connected to one of said latch bars, of a key, and connections whereby said key may set said plate in operative position, to act as a trip-bar, substantially as specified.
37. In an adding machine, numbers recording mechanism including a type-carrier, means for operating said type-carrier to record numbers and another symbol,.means for causing said type-carrier to record a symbol incidentally to the recording of numbers by other parts of said recording mechanism, and an adding wheel controlled by said type-carrier only when numbers are recorded thereby.
38. In. an adding machine, numbers recording mechanism including a type-carrier, a hammer, mechanism controlled by said type-carrier for causing said type-carrier and hammer to cooperate effectively to record numbers, and additional optionally operable mechanism for causing said typecarrier and said hammer to cooperate effectively to record an indicating character other than numbers, incidentally to the recording ofa number.
In an adding machine, numbers recording mechanism including a type-carrier, an adding wheel, means for operating said type-carrier effectively to record any digit from 1 to 9, means for operating said add ing wheel when said type-carrier operates to record digits, means for causing said typecarrier to record an indicating character other than digits incidentally to the recording of a number, and means for holding said adding wheel idle during the operation of recording said indicating character.
40. In an adding machine, the combination with hammers arranged in numerical orders, a series of numeral type, means for coiiperatively operating said hammers and type to print numbers, and adding mechanism to add theunumbers printed, of a key adjustable to prevent operation of said adding mechanism, and means for releasing one of the aforesaid hammers in addition to those required for printing certain numbers when said key is adjusted as aforesaid, sub stantially as specified. The combination with adding mechanism, series of type arranged in numerical orders, and hammers also arranged in numerical orders and operable to drive said type to print numbers, of mechanism adjustable to prevent operation of said'adding mechanism when numbers are printed, and means controlled by said mechanism for releasing one of; said hammers, substantially as specified.
4:2. The combination with type-carriers, numeral type on said type-carriers, mechanism for operating said typecarriers, to position any desired type thereon in line for printing, a hammer for each of said typecarriers, and means for operating each of said hammers when the corresponding typecarrier is in one of several positions, of adding mechanism operable to add the numbers printed, a key, and connections controlled by said key to prevent said adding mechanism from operating and to cause one of the aforesaid hammers to be operated when a number is printed, substantially as specified.
48. The combination with type-carriers, numeral type on said carriers, a hammer for each type-carrier, latches holding said hammers in idle position, means for operating said type-carriers to record numbers, means for releasing one of said hammers for each numerical order in the number to be recorded, and adding mechanism for adding the numbers recorded, of a key, a link actuated by said key, means operated by said link to prevent said adding mechanism from operating when a number is recorded, andmeans actuated by said link to cause one of said hammers to be released when a. number is recorded, substantially as specified.
4A. The combination with type-carriers, numeral type on said type-carriers, a hammer for each type-carrier, 'springs for actuating said hammers, latches holding said hammers in idle position in opposition to said springs, means for operating said typecarriers to record numbers, means for releasing one of said hammers for each numerical order in the number to be recorded, adding mechanism, and means for operating said adding mechanism incidentally to the recording of a number, of a key, a rocking element controlled by said key, means operated by said rocking element to prevent operation of said adding mechanism when a number is recorded, and means operated. bysaid rocking element to cause one of said hammers to be released, substrntially as specified.
45. The combination with adding mechainseam nism, series of type arranged in numerical orders, hammers arranged in numerical orders, latches holding said hammers, and means for operating said hammers to drive said. type to print numbers, of a key, connections adjustable by said key to prevent operation of said adding mechanism when numbers are printed, and connections controlled by said key to enable a certain one 01'. said hammers to operate when any other of said hammers are operated, substantially as specified.
4:6. In an adding and recording machine, printing hammers, pawl-s for holding said hammers, a trip bar for releasing each pawl from the corresponding hammer, and separate means for releasing one of said pawls.
47. In an adding machine, the combination with a printing hammer, a pawl arranged to engage with and hold said hammer, a swinging bail, means for operating said bail, a tripping element for releasing said pawl from said hammer, means for operating said tripping element into the path of movement of said bail to release said pawl from said hammer, and means movable into the path of said bail independently of said tripping element whereby said bail will also release said pawl from said hammer.
48. In an adding machine, the combination with a printing hammer, and a latch device for said hammer, of plural means for releasing said latch device, substantially as described.
49. In an adding machine, the combination. with a printing hammer, and a latch device holding said hammer, of means adjustable automatically under certain conditions for releasing said latch device from said hammer, and manipulative means adjustable independently of said automatic means for releasing said hammer.
50. In an adding machine, the combination with a type carrier, type carried by said type carrier, a hammer for driving said type to record, means for operating said hammer, a latch device for holding said hammer away from said type, automatic means for releasing said latch device incidentally to the positioning of certain of said type for recording, and manipulative means operable means for releasing a hammer in one of the higher orders independently of the corresponding coupling, whereby the hammer so released Will operate independently of the hammers in lower orders.
53. in an adding machine, hammers ar ranged in numerical orders, pawls holding said hammers. automatic means for releasing said pawls, and an additional manually operable device controlling the release of one of said paWls. v
54. in an adding machine, the combina tion with hammers arranged in numerical orders, pawls holding said hammers, a series of 'settable' elements, movable parts controlled by said settable elements, and means under control of said movable parts for releasing said hammers as an incident to the operation of said parts into and out of engagement with said elements, of optionally operable means for releasing one of said hammers independently of the corresponding movable part aforesaid.
