l To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. RosorsKY, a citizen of they United States, residing at Port Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain neuT 'and useful Improvements in Dolls; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencel being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This Iinvention relates, generally, to improvements in toys; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly to a doll, provided with a mouth-piece, preferably, in the form of a pacier, nipple, or the like, connected with means placed within the doll, which is adapted to be inflated with air, and the air allowed to escape through the nipple, to produce sounds in imitation of whistling, crying, etc.

The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a doll having a pacifier or nipple connected with its mouth, whereby the doll may be made to imitate various sounds, such as crying or whistling, and which is most simple in its construction and is readily operated.

Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.

With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel doll hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more4 fully described in the following specificatiomandthen finally embodied in the clauses ofthe claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of the present specification.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a transverse vertical sectional representation of a fragmentary portion of a doll, showing in connection therewith, and in elevation, a pacilier or nipple-like ele* ment, and an inflatablemeans for forcing air through the pacilier or nipple, which is made in the form of a whistle, to produce sounds, and all of which illustrates one embodiment of the principles of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar sectional representation of the head of a' doll 'and a portion of the body, said view showing in connection with the said head, a pacifier or nipple-like element and an inflatable means connected therewith, all made according to but illustrating a slight modification of the principles of the present irl/vention. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pacilier or nipplelike element; Fig. 4 is an end View of the same, looking in the direction of the arrow in said Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, all of said views being made on an enlarged scale.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a suitablyformed body of a doll, and 2 is a hollow head suitably mounted upon said body in any well-known manner. The said body l is preferably provided with a suitably located perforation or opening, as 3, the purpose of which is self-evident. Within the said body is also suitably located a suitably formed bellows, as 4, having an air-inlet, as 5, indicated in dotted outline, and a suitable air-outlet, as 6. Connected with the said air-outlet 6 is a piece of tubing, as 7, which extends in an upward direction in said bodyl l and into the hollow head 2, where it is suitably attached to an inlet-portion, as 9, of an inflatable bag or sack, as 8, disposed within the said head 2. The said bag or sack 8 is also provided with an outlet-portion, as 10, with which is suitably-connected a paciier or nipple-like element, as 11, made in the form of a device which, when air is forced therethrough from the inflated bag or sack, will produce sounds in imitation of crying, or the like. That the said pacifier or nipple-like element 11 can be removed from the mouth of the doll, if desired, it may be made in the manner represented more particularly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, in which case the pacier or nipple-like element consists, essentially, of a tubular member l2, provided with the disk'l and rmg 14, torepresent a pacier, as will be evident. The end-portion 15 of the said member 12 extends into and' through a properly formed opening 16 representing the mouth of` the doll, and is inserted in another tube-like member 17, provided with a vibratory band 18, of rubber or lthe like, so as to produce a whistle or other sound-producing member, as will be clearly evident. The inner end-portion of the saidv member 18 is suitably attached to the previouslymentioned outlet-portion 10 of the inflatable bag or sack 8.

The manner of operatingthe bellows, to inflate the bag 0r sack 8, and the manner of operating the sound-producing pacifier or nipple-like element, when the 'air rushes fromthe outlet-portion 10 of the bag or sack 8 will be clearly understood from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings, and need not, therefore be further described.

In lieu ofthe form of inflatable bag or sack provided with two portions, as 9 and 10, one serving as an inlet and the other as an outlet, a bag or sack, as 19,. which is provided with but one open' portion, as 20, may be used as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, with the above-described pacifier or nipplelike element 11, thebellows and connecting tube in that case being dispensed with. In the construction shown in said ligure, the bag or sack 19 is inflated by placing the mouth over the tubular member 12, the mouth being removed when the bag or sach is inflated. As soon as the mouth is removed from the element 12, the bag or sack expels the air in the reverse direction through the nipple-like element in contact with the vibratory band 18, so as to produce a sound, as will be clearly evident.

Of course, I am aware `that changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the 'several devices and parts, as well as in the'details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended to the said specification. Hence, I donot limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to theeXact details of the construction of the several parts as illustrated lin the accompanying drawings.

I claim 1; In a doll, in combination with the' in# terior of the head of the doll, an inflatable air-receiving element within said head, and a nipple-like sound-producing element arranged in the mouth of said head and connected with said air-receiving element.

2. In a doll, in combination with the interior of ythe head of the doll, an inflatable air-receiving element within said head, and a nipple-like sound-producing element consisting of a pair of separably connected tubular members, one of said tubular members being arranged in the mouth of said head, and the other tubular member being connected with-said air-receiving element.

3. In a doll, in combination with the interior of the head and body of the doll, an inflatable air-receiving element within said head, a sound-producing element connected with said air-receiving element, said soundproducing element having a sound-outlet in registration with the mouth of said head, a bellows within said body, anda tubular connection between said bellows and an inletportion with which the said air-receiving element is provided.

4l. In a doll, 1n combination, with the inteiior of the head and body of the doll, an in` flatable air-receiving element within said head, said air-receiving element having an outlet-portion and an inlet-portion, a nipplelike sound-producing element arranged in the mouth of said head and connected with the outlet-portion of-said air-receiving element, a bellows within said body, and a tubular connection between said bellows and the inlet-portion of said air-receiving element.

5. In a doll, in combination with the interior of the head and body of the doll, an

inflatable air-receiving element within said I head, said air-receiving element having an outlet-portion and an inlet portion, a nipplelike sound-producing element consisting of a pair of separably connected tubular members, one of said tubular members being arranged in the mouth of said head, and the other tubular member being connected with the outlet-portion of said air-receiving member, a bellows within said body, and a tubular connection between said bellows and the inlet-portion of said air-receiving element.
