Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 30, 1914. Serial No. 828,378.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, WALTER TAYLOR and ROBERT G. NEWTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Boyd and Burlingame, in the counties of Beaver and Osage and States of Oklahoma and Kansas, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knife Sharpeners especially adapted for household use, having for its primary object the production of a simple device which may be advantageously used by a person unskilled in this art.
Another object of the lI1VeI1t10I1 1S to provide a portable structure which Wlll occupy a minimum amount of space; an abrasive material being so associated therew th as to permit of the sharpening of the knife upon the reciprocation of the latter, thereby eliminating the necessity of operatlng the kn fe between the abrasive material in a peculiar manner in order to bring about the desired result.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of our invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knife sharpener constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same showing one of the branches of the bifurcation broken away to disclose the manner in which the abrasive material is mounted in the opposite branch of the bifurcation; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the abrasive blocks.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention an integral casting is provided which comprises a base 5 in which is formed a pair of openings 6 the latter adapted for the reception of screws or the like in order to engage the same with a suitable support. The base 5 has extending from the upper face thereof and between the openings 6 a leg 7, the free terminal of which is bifurcated so as to provide a substantially Y-shaped structure, the branches 8 of the bifurcation bein arc'uated so as to extend at a substantially right angle to the body of the leg as advantageously illustrated in Fig. 2, the extreme outer ends of the said branches being beveled in order to facilitate the insertion of the knife between the branches. The leg 7 and base 5 are preferably made of metal and are cast in a single piece in order to provide acompact structure and at the same time to reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum.
At the, jointure of the branches of the bifurcation a pair of oppositely disposed cut- .out portions 9 are formed, each of which has mounted therein an abrasive block 10, the latter having their parallel faces roughened so as to contact with the knife blade when the latter is reciprocated therebetween, said blocks being slidably engaged in the cut-out portions 9 in order to permit of the removal of the same should they become broken or inapt for use. Said blocks 10 have the lower marginal edges thereof in engagement so as to provide a substantially V-shaped opening in order to regulate the sharpening of the edge of the blade of the knife which is actuated therebetween.
In operation, the edge of the blade which is to be sharpened is merely inserted between the branches 8 of the bifurcation and the same reciprocated so that the edge con tacts with the abrasive blocks 10 thereby causing said edge to be sharpened as is obvious without the utility of .any --extraordinary skill in the handling of the invention which has heretofore been undesirable in devices of this character in view of the fact that persons unskilled in this art were unable to sharpen the knives since a certain knowledge of the manner in which the knife was to be operated between the abrasive blocks or the like was required. Furthermore by the peculiar manner in which the branches 8 of the bifurcations are arcuated, it is seen that the abrasive blocks 10 are disposed at an inclination, whereby they are vespecially adaptable for use when the operator is in a standing position,'since when in this position the knife is at an inclination. By disposing the blocks at an inclination and engaging their proximate lower margins, surface contact with the knife blade is positively insured, thereby facilitating the sharpening of the knife and requiring no unnatural mode of operation to produce the desired result.
It will be understood that the above dobe made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A knife sharpener including a base adapted for securement to .a support, a leg extending from the base having its free end bifurcated,the branches of the bifurcations being provided with recesses adjacent their jointure, and being arcuated to dispose said recesses at an inclination, abrasive bloclcs- WALTER L.
