Be it known that I, FRANZ TRINKs,manufacturer, a 'citizenof the Duchyof Bruns wick, Empire of Germany, residing at.
Brunswick, Germany, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machines, of which the' following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly in calculating. machines which are provided with setting disks on which the values are set by setting :the corresponding number of teeth into operative positions, one setting disk corresponding to each order, the first j one from the right corresponding to the units, the second: one to thetenths, the third one to the hundredths, etc. ,7

- said teeth are adapted to be brought into positions for engagement with intermediate gear wheels 6 corresponding one to each of the setting disks and cooperating with gear wheels to connected with numeral wheels w the figures; of which are displayed through of the machine. Ordinarily the teeth cl are in their inoperative positions in which they do not impart rotary movement to the intermediate gear wheels and the numeral wheels, when the shaft 6 is rotated by the machine crank. In order to transmit a certain value to the numeral wheels, the corresponding number of teeth d is first set in operative position, whereupon the machine crank is rotated. Thereby the value set on the setting disks is transmitted to the numeral wheels and displayed through the peep holes. The dimensions of the noses z and 7: and the teeth (Z are such, that when rocking the levers c in the direction of the arrow :1? shown in Fig. 1, at first the nose it strikes along a lateral projection (Z formed on the lower part of the tooth cl, and that thereafter the nose 71 engages the upper end of the tooth (Z and rocks the same in operative position. lVhen rocking the lever a backward and in the direction of the arrow 1 shown in Fig. 1, at first the nose 2' moves along the upper end of the tooth (Z without acting on the same, and thereafter the lower nose 7c strikes the projection 6Z made at the lower end of the tooth d and rocks the same into inoperative position. The levers c and the disks (4 are adapted to be locked relatively to each other in either one of the ten positions in which they can be set by a yielding locking mechanism, which as shown consists of a toothed sector 9 connected or made integral one with each of the levers c and a spring actuated latch h secured one to each of the disks a. If desired the said sectors can be connected with the disks and the latches with the levers c.
For locking the teeth d in their positions the following mechanisms are provided: Each of the teeth carries at its lower end a nose d and on each of the disks a a spring actuated latch pin 6 is mounted which is similar in construction to the pins h. In
'one of their positions the noses (Z are located at the right and in the other one at the left of the pins 6.
According to my invention the mechanism is constructed in such a way, that by means of the levers c the teeth (Z are rocked only from one position into the other one, and that for locking the teeth in either position the parts (Z and i are used which are entirely independent of the levers 0.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown a modification of the invention in which the levers c and their hand pieces 0 which in the example shown in Figs. 1 and 2 take part in the rotation of the disks a are stationary relatively to the disks, so that they can have any desired length and thickness. For this purpose the setting levers c are pivotally mounted on their hubs m so that they can be rocked about the axis 0 in the direction toward the shaft. Springs 79 have the tendency to pull the levers away from the disks a, so that their noses 2' and are out of positions for engagement with the teeth (Z or lateral projections formed thereon when the disks are being rotated. But if it is desired to set a value on the setting disks, the levers c are rocked by means of the hand pieces 0 to the right, whereupon setting can be performed. The means for locking the levers in either positions are constructed in such a way, that the spring actuated latch pins ii are not mounted on the disks a but on the machine frame.
In order that the levers c be rocked sufficiently to the right prior to setting a value or returned into inoperative positions after the values have been set on the setting disks, so that they are in positions for engagement with the teeth (Z or the lateral noses thereof, the slits 7 made in the cover of the casing f and permitting the passage of the hand pieces therethrough can be made in the manner shown in Fig. 5, in which indentations are shown at the left hand side walls of the slits. Thereby the operator must rock the hand piece 0 the proper distance to the right before setting can take place.
In the modification of the construction shown in Fig. 6 rods 8 are provided in lieu of the levers 0 or 0 which rods are shiftable within sleeves Q1 radially of the shaft 6 and in opposition to springs 25. The sleeves have rocking supports on the shaft 6, and the rods 8 carry lateral noses 2' and 70 and by depressing the rods the said noses are brought into positions for engagement with the ends or lateral projections of the teeth (Z. Also in this case means may be provided for forcing the operator to depress the rods .9 sufficiently prior to rocking the sleeves 'v. To show what may be done toothed sectors 2' are provided on the lower side of the cas ing 7, and the indentations of the said sectors are in such positions, that they are engaged by the noses i or special noses or stop members formed on the rods 8 when in the uppermost positions. In this case setting is not possible before the head of the rods .9 have been depressed.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, and the setting disks cooperating therewith and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, of members one for each ofthe setting disks adapted to be moved along said teeth and arranged for engagement respectively with the ends of the teeth and at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and when moved along the teeth for rocking the same, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
2. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, and the setting disks cooperating therewith and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, of members one for each of the setting disks adapted to be moved along said teeth and arranged for engagement respectively with the ends of the teeth and at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and when moved along the teeth for rocking the same, means for locking the members relatively to the disks in .their positions relatively to the teeth, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
3. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, and the setting disks cooperating therewith and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, of members one for each of the setting disks adapted to be moved along said teeth and arranged for engagement respectively with the ends of the teeth and at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and when moved along the teeth for rocking the same, said movable members being so mount ed, that they can be moved with the parts engaging the teeth out of the paths of the teeth, locking means for holding the movable members in their positions in and out of the paths of the teeth, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
i. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, a rotary shaft, setting disks mounted on said shaft and cooperating with the registering mechanism, and rocking teeth arranged about the circumferences of the disks, of members on said rotary shaft one for each of the setting disks adapted to be moved along said teeth and having parts which are rockingly mounted on pins substantially parallel to the planes of the disks and are adapted to engage the teeth respectively at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and when moved along the teeth to rock the same, locking means for holding the movable members in and out of the paths of the teeth, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
5. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, a rotary shaft, setting disks mounted on said shaft and cooperating with the registering mechanism and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, and a casing inclosing said registering mechanism, of members on said shaft one for each of the setting disks adapted to be moved along said teeth and having parts which are rock- ,ingly mounted on pins substantially parallel to the plane of the disks and are adapted to engage respectively with the ends of the teeth at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and to rock the teeth, said members projeoting through slits made in the wall of the casing and adapted to engage in indentations made in the side walls of said slits, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
6. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, and the setting disks cooperating therewith and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, members one for each of the setting disks movable along said teeth and having longitudinally shiftable parts which are adapted when moved along the teeth to engage respectively with the ends of the same at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and to rock the same, said shiftable parts being so mounted that they can be shifted out of cooperation with the teeth, springs tending to hold the members in inoperative positions, aud independent meansto hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
7. In a calculating machine, the combination with the registering mechanism, and the setting disks cooperating therewith and having rocking teeth arranged about their circumferences, of members one for each of the setting disks movable along said teeth and having longitudinally shiftable parts which are adapted when moved along the teeth to engage respectively with the ends of the teeth at opposite sides of the fulcrums thereof and to rock the same, said shiftable members being so mounted that they can be shifted out of the paths of the teeth, relatively fixed toothed sectors adapted to be engaged by the shiftable parts when out of operative positions, and independent means to hold the teeth in operative and inoperative positions.
