ALBERT J'. LOEPSINGER, 0F PROVIDENCE;` RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL vEIlRlil EXTINGUISHER COMPANY, OF 'NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
FUsIBLn DEVICE,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J'. Lonrsiivcnn, of Providence, in the county 4of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented Vcertain new and useful j Improvements in Fusible Devices; and I do lhereby declare the following specication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. y
The present invention relates to a fusible device such as is employed for holding closed the valve o-f an automatic sprinkler or fire extinguisher, or in connection with otherp hereinafter described 'and claimed.
automatic fire extinguishing apparatus.
The invention relates more particularly to that form of fusible device which is composed of three members, usually termed a post, a lever, and a' key, for reducing the strain upon the fusible solder` joint, as for example the form of fusible device employed 'for holding the valve closed in Ithe wellknown Grinnell sprinkler. Y-
Ina device of this character and in which the key-member hasa tendency to rock under the strain to which the strut is subjected, the greatest strain upon the solder joint `comes 'at the lower endof said key-member, and particularly at the lower edge of what may bevtermed the anchor portion of said key-member.
The object of the present invention isto strengthen the fusible solder jointin a device of this character, and particularly vthe joint between the anchor portion 'of the keymember and the post memberlof said device.
-Tothat end the' invention consists primarily in providing the anchorfportion of the key member of such devicewith a lateral projection at its end to thereby facilitate the building up at this point-of a ridge, or mound of fusible'4 solder, and thereby strengthen the joint between such anchor' 'member and the post member of the device.
The invention further consists provid;- ing the anchor portion ofthe key-member at its end with slots, thereby forming tongues or teeth which serve to, increase the -extent ofthe edge of such anchor portion' to which the solder can be applied and alsoto provide recesses within 'the compassfof such anchor `portion, within'which recesses an additionalamount of solderl may be received.
The invention further consists in provid.-
i'ng the y,anchor portion kof the key member at its end with slots and in providing the intermediate tongues .or teeth formed thereby with lateralprojections. y
The invention further consists in providing the anchor portion of the key-member at its end withl slots and in providing `the postanember of the device with corresponding or registering slots or perforations to thereby render possible the formation of what may be termed a rivet of solderA t'o unite the anchor portionl of said key member to said post member.
. The invention further-consists incertain constructions and combination of parts .fusible device embodying certain features of the present invention, the fusible solder being shown as applied inFig. 3; and Figs. 4 and f5 are corresponding front and edge views of a. portion of the post member and 0f the anchor portion of the key member embodying a further features of the inven tion, the fusible solder being .shown as appliedliILFig. 5.
In the sprinkler shown in Fig. l' the body portion 1 withV the screw-threaded neck 2,
the yoke 3, and def-lector 4 are or may be all of the usual construction. So also the fusible device is of the usual `,construction in the lrespect that it comprises three members, viz.the post 5 lever 6, and key 7, said keyl member being provided with an anchor portion 8 adapted to be secured -by fusible solder to the face of the post-member 5.
Referring first to the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the .anchor portion 8 of the key-member is provided with slots 9 formingv the tongues or teeth 10. The lower ends of these tongues are bent outward or otheriop wisc provided with outward or lateral 'projections 1l. The fusible 'solder is applied in the form of a ridge or V mound 12,.' as
'shown in Fig. 3. The construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is theisame as that shown in Figs. 2 and-3, and thewcprresponding parts are therefore, similarly numbered, with the exception that the post member 5 is` also provided with slots or perforations 9L corresponding to and registering with the slots9 in the anchor portion of the key-'member 7. The slots in said post-memberv are, however, preferably made somewhat longer than the slots 9 in the key-member, and so as to extend somewhat below the end of said key-member, as shown in Figs. l and 5. With this. construction the fusible solder extends through the slots 9a in the vpost-member and is formed into a ridge or mound 12afon the v opposite side of said post-member.
VVithf' the construction above described, and as shown both in Figs. 2 and 3 and also invFigs. 'ff and 5, the slots in the anchor por tion of 'the key-member form an extended v edge at the end of said key-member and also form recesses, when the parts are assembled, adapted to receive an additional amount of the fusible solder, while the outward or lateral projections ll constitute a core or cores, so to speak, about which the 'ridge or mound of solder 12 may be built up,
thereby providinga much stronger solder joint' at this point than has -heretofore been possible. It is evident that, if desired,` the slots 9 may be omitted, in'which caseI there would be a single continuous outward or lateral projection about which the ridge or mound of solder may be built up in the same manner. So also, if desired, the lateral pro ject-ion or projections may be omitted and only 'the slots in the anchor portion of thel viding the pincers with which the parts are held during the soldering operation with a mold or depression to receive, the solder. With this construction the fusible solder takessubstantially the form of a headed `rivet, which serves to still further strengthen the solder joint and the fusible union between the anchor portion of the key-member and the post-member of the device. It will be understood that'if such a rivet formation of the solder is to be produced it will be desirable to hold the parts in a horizontal position during the soldering operation, with the anchorportion of the key-member uppermost. i,
It will 4be understood that the shape, size, number and location of the slots in the keymember and inthe post-member, respec,
tively, may be varied as desired.
What I claim as my invention and desire `,to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fusible device comprising a postmember, a lever-member, and a key-member extending through said post-member and having an anchor portion lying parallel with said post, said anchor portion being provided with a lateral projection about which the fusible solder may be built.
'2. A fusible device comprising a postmember, a lever-member, and a key-member extending through said post-member and having an anchor portion'lying parallel with said post, said anchorportion being prov vided with slots to receive the fusible solder.
3. A fusible deviceI comprising a postmember, a lever-member, and a key-member extending through said postmember and having an anchor-portion, said anchor-portion being provided with slots and also with Aa lateral projection about which the fusible solder may be built.
4. A fusible. device-comprising a postmember, a lever-member, and a key-member extending through said post-member and having an anchoreportion, said anchor-portion being provided with slots and having the tongues formed thereby provided with lateral projections.
5. A fusible device comprising a postmember, a .lever-member, and a key-member extending through said post-member and having ananchor-portion, said anchorportion being provided with parallel open-end' ed slots and said post-member being pro vided with slots registering with the slots in said key-member.
6. A fusible device comprising a post member, a lever-member, and a key-member having an anchoreportion, said key-member being provided with slots and also with lateral projections, and said dpost-member being provided withlslots registering with the slots in said key-member.
