To all whom it may concern.-
, Be it known that I, SETH A. CRoNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and separation of the head from the hanger when, due to any cause, a key holding a brake-shoe to its head becomes separated from the head. It is sometimes the case that a Workman will remove the key to use for some purpose other than its intended duty and forget to replace the key in the brake-head, and in such instances, under standard constructions of brake-heads, the head is entirelylikely to slip from the hanger and the. end of. thebeam with the head on it may then fall to the track. It has been found that duefto various causes the keys connecting brake-shoeswith brake-heads become separated from the structure, and the object of my invention is to avoid the consequences which would naturally follow the slipping'of the brake-head from its hanger due to the absence of the key.
In carrying outmy invention I so construct and connect the lower end of the usual brake-hanger and ,brake-head, that the hanger will retain the brake-head even though the usual key be absent from such head, and I have sought to carry out my invention by means not adding materially to the weight orexpense of the head or hanger.

head and 11 the hanger by which the head and the adjacent end of the beam, not shown, are suspended in a customarv manner.
The hanger 11 may be of any usual or suitable type, and the only addition I make to the hanger is to equip the lower wrist of the same with a pin or downwardly extending lug or projection 12. I prefer to employ an ordinary straight pin for the member 12 and'to secure the upper end of the same, by a shrinking operation, in a socket formed in the wrist of the hanger.
The head 10 is, in its main features, of standard construction, there being the customary socket 13 for the adjoining ends of the tension and compression members of the brake-beam, not shown, lugs 14, 15, 16 and 17 to receive the brake-shoe and its securing key, not shown, a central transverse recess 18 to receive the lower wrist of the hanger when it is desired to suspend the head from that point, and an upper trans verse recess 19 to receive the lower wrist of the hanger when it is desired to suspend the head from a point above the brake beam.
The new features presented in the head 10 reside in the provision of two arcuate slots 20, 21 in the body of the head at the respective recesses 18, 19 to receive the pin or projection 12, the slot 20 receiving said pin or projection when the hanger is in the 18, 19 so that the head and hanger may be connected either at the recess 18 or the recess 19, as may be preferred. The slot 20 is formed in the portion 22 constituting the lower wall of the recess 18, and below said portion 22 the casting is transversely slotted, as at 23, thereby leaving an opening into which the lower end of the pin or projection 12 may extend. The front end of the slot 20 is closed by a portion 24 of the head, and this portion 24; serves as a stop to prevent the lower end of the pin or projection 12 from swinging outwardly from the slot 20. The upper end of the slot 20 is also closed, as denoted at 25.
In applying the hanger 11 to the recess 18 of the head. 10, I turn said hanger downwardly into a position almost at right angles to the face of the head and insert the end of the pin or projection '12 into the slot 20,
gradually working the same therein and turning the hanger upwardly so that its lpinerwrist becomes lodged within the recess 18 and the pin or projection 12 becomes confined within the slot 20. When the lower wrist of the hanger 11 is within the recess 18 and the pin or projection 12 is confined within the slot 20, said head and hanger 'm-ay have their usual swinging movements,
but the pin will prevent the head from leaving the hanger, even though the -s'hoe-secur- .ing-key may be absent, and the accomplishment of this purpose is :the chief object of my invention.

The hanger may be applied to the. recess '19 and slot 21 in the same manner that I haveherei-nbefore described with reference to the application of the hanger to the recess 18 and slot 20.
When the head and hanger are constructedand connected together in the manner hereinbefore described, the head will remain connected with the hanger even though the brake-shoe and 'brake-shoekey should become broken or detached or omitted from the head, and hence in the absence of the shoe and key the head will remain suspended by the hanger and not be permitted, with its end of the brake-beam, to fall down to the roadbed. The headan-id hanger are, bymeans of my invention, detachably connected together, and the. presence of my invention does not materially increase the cost or weight of either thehead or hanger.
