Appiieationiled November 16, 1914. Serial Ne. 872,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. SHEP- HERB, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Mechanism for Double Doors, of
, which fthe following is a specification.
This 'invention relates to double doors or doors used-in pairs to close a doorway, one of the doors of the pair being provided with one or more vertical lend bolts whereby it may be bolted to the door-frame, and slotted orrec'essed at its outeredge to receive a lock bolt, or a lock bolt and a latch bolt, on the companion door, so that the two doors may be interlocked.
The invention has for its object to prevent the doors from being interlocked until the-end-bclt-carrying door has been engaged with the door frame by its bolt `or bolts, and thus prevent the possibility of insuiiciently fastening the doors, it being a fact'thatf the doors are interlocked wit-hout bolting one of the doors fto the. frame, they can in many cases be opened by pressure against their meeting edges.
lThe invention consists in the improvef I ments which I will now vproceed to describe f and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a portion of a door carrying two vertical end bolts, and provided lwith an attachment embodying my invention, the bolts being retracted, and portions of the companion door shown lby dotted lines; Fig. 2 represents a view similar to Fig.- 1., showing the end bolts projected;- Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the inner sideof the baiie hereinafter described; Fig. 4 represents an edge view of a portion of the -end-bolt-carrying door; Fig. 5 represents a lsection on the plane indicated by the broken line 5 5 (Fig. 1) and a top plan view 'of the parts between the divisions of said line; Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the part .herelnafter termed the balile, adapted to serve also as a striker plate.
' The same reference characters indicate the same or lsimilar parts in all the views.
In the drawings, 12 represents a portion of the end-bolt-carrying door of a pair of doors,l and 13 represents a portion of the The door 12 is provided with vertical end .I bolts 14 adapted to enter sockets in the door frame top and in the sill or threshold. Saidv bolts arey simultaneously projected and retracted by ,a manually operated member..
which isy preferably composed of a spindle 15 having circular end portions journaled in bearings 16 attached to the door 12, and oppositely projecting arms 17 formed on a hub 17B engaged with the squared central portion ofthe spindle Said arms are connectedwith the bolts 14 by elongated rods 18 having terminals .20 pivoted at 19 to the arms, the outer ends of the 'rods being threaded and engaged with tapped orifices in the bolts. One end of the spindle is provided withl a handle 21 by which it may 'be turned.
The companion door .13 is provided with the `usual latch bolt 23 and-lock bolt 24,
these being arranged to enter slots 25 and 26 in a striker plate 27 attached to the edge of the door 12, the doors being thus inter? baille stands in the paths of the latch andv lock bolts 23 and 24, :as 'shown by Fig. 1, and prevents the interlocking of the doors. When, however, the end bolts are projected,
the baille is moved out vof the paths of the,v bolts 23-and 24, and permits the interlocking'of the doors, as-shown by Fig. 2.
The baliie is preferably la. plate fitted to slide vertically in a guideway in the edge of the door 12, behind the striker plate 27 and is preferably provided with a slot 29 formed to receive the latch bolt 23, and with a slot 30, formed to receive the lock bolt 24. The portions of said plate between the slots 29 and 30, and below the slot 30,` constitute the acting portions of thebaiiie and stand in the paths of the bolts 2,3 and 24 when the end bolts are retracted.
The preferred connections between the manually operated end-boltthrowing member and the baiile whereby the baiile is caused to act automatically as above stated comprise spaced apart ears 32 on the inner side of the baille, and a tappet 33 on one of the arms 17 :engaged with th'efeersr32. i
It-will be seenl by referenc'eto Figs. l and 2 that when the end bols 14 are?, retracted the baiiie 28 covers the striker plate slots 25` bolt-carrying door l2 is secured to the door frame.
The striker plate 427 vconstitutes a convenient means for guiding the baffle 28, and retaining it on the door l2. It is obvious however that the baHle formed'to receive .the projected bolts 23 andy 24 constitutes also a movable striker plate, Which may be exposed on the outer surface ofthe door l2 and guided and retained on the door by any other suitable means, as shownv by Fig. 6. .I do not confine myself to the specific construction of the' end bolt throwing mech- A anism, the baiile, and the connections between the baffle and the manually operated bolt throwing member, and these may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of the invention. Moreover, it is o vious that the baliie may be apertured to coperate with but one boltfonthe door 13, the bolt 24: for eXample, and that the door 12' may be provided with one endbolt 14hl instead oftwo. 4
Incidentally thev baffle prevents the end bolts from being retracted While the doors are interlocked. The attachment may be secured to the exterior of the door in an exosed position, instead` of being inclosed beween the sides of the door as here shown.
Having'described my invention, I claim:-
1. A11 attachment lfor one of a pair of doors, comprising a manually operated endbolt-throwing 'member .mounted onV said door, a baiie movable on the edge portion of the same door and apertured to. receive -a lock bolt on the `companion door, means being provided for conining and guiding said baiiie, and connectionsbetween said bolt throwing member and baffle, whereby a movement of said member to its end bolt retracting position locates said baffle in the pathv of the said lock bolt to prevent the interlocking of the two doors, said battle being formed to vreceive the said lock bolt and permit theinterlobking of the doors when the said member is in its end bolt projecting position;
2. An attachment fornone of a pair of ,doors, comprising a manually operated spin# dle journaled in bearings on the door .and' oppositely projecting arms on said spindle connected with end bolts at the upper and lower ends of 'the door, one of said arms be- `ing 'provided with a tappet, and a baffle movable on the edge portion. of lthe same door and apertured to receive a lock bolt on j the companion door, said baiiie having ears engaged with said tappet and being movable by the latter into and out of the path of said lock bolt, means being provided for confining and guiding said baile. o
3. A n attachment for one of a pair of doors, comprising a manually operated endbolt-throwing member mounted on the end bolt-carrying door, a baile movable on the edge portion ofthe same door and apertured to receive a lock bolt on the companion door, a striker plate attached to the end bolt-carrying'door, and apertured to' receive said lock bolt, said plate 'constitutinga means for confining. and guiding said bale, and operating connections between said bolt throwing member and bafie, said baffle being formed to alternately cover and uncover the apertures in the striker plate. 4. An attachment for one of a pair of doors, comprising a manually operated endbolt-throwing member mounted on the endbolt-carrying door, a bai'le movable on the edge portion ofthe same door and apertured to receive a lock bolt and a latch bolt on the companion door, means being rovided for conning and'guiding said ba e, and operating connections between the said member and baffle, whereby the baiie maybe held alternately in the paths of said lock and latch .bolts to prevent the interlocking of the doors, and out of said paths', the baflie being formed to receive the lock and latch bolts and permit the interlocking of the doors. n
5. An attachment' for one of a pair of doors,'comprising a pair of bearings attached to said door, a manually movable spindle journaled in said bearings, oppositelyl projecting arms on said spindle, end bolts at the upper and lower ends of the door, rods connecting said bolts with the spindle arms, a baiiie movable on the edge portion of the door and apertured to receive a locking bolt and a latch bolt on the companion door, operating connections between saidA baiiie and one of the spindle arms,. and a fixed strikerplate alsoV apertured to receive said locking bolt and latch bolt, said bafll'e being formed to alternately cover and. uncover the apertures in the striker plate.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
