To all whom t may concern:
Be it lnown that I, MICHAEL J. Koi-iur, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenpoint, Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invent-- ed certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a new and improved door bolt, referring more particularly to the type o-f bolt that is used for heavy doors and locks the same at boththe bottom and top thereof.
It is the object of my invention, among other things, to produce a bolt of this character that will be of simple construction, readily assembled, produced at the minimum cost and will withstand very rough, hard usage.
To these, and other ends, my invention consists in the bolt, having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bolt complete; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the body member and adjacent parts; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the cap plate removed, showing the interior mechanism; and Fig. 11 is a sectional view of the parts taken upon line ih- B of Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a body member 1, having a recess 2 therein and slots 8 in the opposite ends thereof connecting with said recess. Formed integral with said body member and within said recesses are the stop'lugs 4 and the screw lugs 5.
The bolt slides are designatediby the numeral 6, each being, provided with a shank 7, to which the bolt rods 8 are secured, the latter being of varying lengthsto accommodate doors of varying sizes. Each of the bolt slides 6 terminates in an offset tail portion 9, one face of which is smooth and bears against one wall of the recess 2, the other face being provided with teeth 10, to form a rack, and into which meshes the teeth 11 of a pinion 12, rotatably mounted upon a stud 13 integral with the handle 14, having a latch 15 thereon which is moved into and out' of a lip 16 upon a latch plate 17. 13 is journaled within the body member, as shown in Fig. 3, sov as to form a rigid and substantial support for the handle 14. A screw 18 threaded into the stud 13 prevents endwise movement of the pinion thereon.
The mechanism is inclosed within the body member 1 by a cap plate 19 that is secured by suitable screws 20 that pass therethrough and are threaded into the screw lugs 5, an aperture 21 being formed through said cap plate to permit the to pass therethrough. In the opposite edges of said cap plate are the notches 22, into which project the stop lugs 2323 integral with the tail portions 9. Suitable guide plates 24 support the bolt rods 8 and maintain the same in proper alinement.
In Fig. 1 I have shown two forms of keepers, the upper one being designated 25 and is designed to be secured to a surface parallel with the bolt 8, and the other one, designated 26, being designed for attachment to a surface at right angles thereto, either one or both being used as occasion demands. rI`he manual operation of the handle 11': about the aXis of the stud 13 moves the bolt slides 6 in opposite directions, through a straight path. In their eX- tended position, locking the door and in their withdrawn position releasing the same. The shoulders 27 on the bolt slides 6 abut against the stop lugs 4 when in their eX- treme outward position, thereby forming a positive unyielding stop and transmitting the shock to the heavy body member 1 and relieving the strain from the teeth of the pinion and those of the racks on the tail pieces 9, while at the same time the lugs 23 engage the opposite ends of the notches 22 in the cap plate 19 and provide a double stop for the slide bolts. The inward position of the slide bolts is limited by the engagement of the opposite ends of the lugs with the opposite ends of the notches 22, this also forming a rigid unyielding stop and transmitting the shock and the strain to the body member through the cap plate. In some places it is not necessary or desirable to use the latch 17, in which case the handle bar 14 is formed without the latch 15.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, aside from those herein suggested, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herehead of the screw 18' in shown and described, but claim all that 'falls fairly within the Spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bolt including a body member, oppositely acting bolt slides operative in the body member, manually operative means for inducing simultaneous opposite movement of the slides, a cap plate covering the slides and holding the same within the body member, said cap plate being formed with oppositely arranged elongated recesses, and projections carried by the slides and fitting said recesses whereby to limit movement of the slides in both directions.
