To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LfiYRUS LEWIS, Sn, a
'citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rifiiing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for riflling pipes.
Heretofore, it has been common to rifile the interior of ipes by passing them through rolls, one of which was provided with spiral ribs, and the other of which was provided with spiral indentations to receiveor to coact with the ribs. After the pipe was thus rifiied or corrugated it was welded together and sized. This latter operation resulted in the depression of the riflles in the pipe and frequently reducedtheir depth to such an extent that the rifiies'were useless.
It is the object of this invention to obviate the difiiculties experienced and the faulty results produced in such mechanism a 1d broadly speaking consists in providing the sizing rolls and bell with means for internally rifiling the pipe as it is sized.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompan ing drawings which form a part of this app ication, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 represents a suitable support from which depend the separate arms 2 having journaled therein the sizing rollers 3 and 4, both of which are provided with semicylindrical peripheral grooves 5 to receive the pipe. The core or forming bell is shown at 6 which comprises an elongated circular member having a pointed head 7 adapted to project slightly into the circular pass formed by the grooves 5 and having its rear end provided with a triangular or J Specification of Letters Patent.

square socket 8 which is adapted to receive the squareor triangular end 9 of the driving shaft 10. This shaft is provided with a siiitable gear 11 on its rear end which is adapted, to mesh with a driving gear (not shown). The shaft 10 is preferably slidably mounted" within its bearings so as to permit the removal 'of the pipe after being properly riflled. The core or bell 6 is provided with a plurality of diagonally extending recesses 12 in which are removably fitted bearing frames 13 having suitable anti-friction bearings 14 mounted therein to receive the short pintles 15 of the rifliing rollers 16. These rollers are held in position by suitable side bars 17 which are bolted to the frame 13. Two of these riffiing rollers are mounted upon one side of the core adjacent the ends thereof and extend in the same direction in parallel lines and one of the rollers is arranged on the opposite side intermediate the end. These rollers aim their frames may be raised by the shims shown in Fig. 5 when said shims are placed beneath the frames in the sockets 12 so that the riffling in the inner side of the pipe will have its depth increased or decreased as desired. It willof course be understood that the sockets and roller frames together with their rollers may be set at any angle desired in the core so as to secure the desired pitch in theprittling. When the pitch of the rollers is changed it is necessary to also change the speed of rotation of the shaft to correspond.
The term rifliing, used throughout the specification and in the claims, is a common expression used in tube mills to define diagthe word should therefore be accepted with this definition.
I Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a riflling machine, the combination with a sizing device, of a sizing core, and rollers carried by the sizing core for ritfling the interior 'of the pipe.
2. In a pipe rifliing machine, the combination with a pair of sizing rolls, of an interior sizing core, and a plurality'of rifiling rollers carried by the core.
3. In a pipe riffling machine, the combination with a pair of sizing rolls, of an interior sizing core, a plurality of-rifiing rolloimso a plurality of liming rollers removably ers arranged diagonally across the axis of mounted insaid sockets.
